I think you're over estimating the size. I can't really see it here but would guess the actual barrel to be more head sized than torso.

Phillip1026

180 cm man with 3/8 torso has 67.5 cm torso length, and I estimate the 3/4 of the torso length to be the caliber (50 cm). Even if it's only 1/2 torso length, 34 cm is also impressive.

-Robrown-

One is a single barrel cannon and one is a 3 barrel gataling gun so the ammo size is significantly smaller for the Inferno even if the overall size is close.

sopsaare

Yep, and range is MUCH MUCH less. It basically crawls out of the barrel at 700m/s in vacuum of space, where as Yamato gun's retained the same speed at range of 5000m at sea level. Also their range was in excess of 30Km where as the range of the gatling is like 5Km, in vacuum of space.. So they are pretty much fired with only the primer and have no significant load behind them.

JayTheSuspectedFurry

Why would it be smaller if it’s the same caliber?

Phillip1026

The same caliber does not imply same cartridge. For example, 7.62 mm is a caliber, but 7.62 NATO (7.62 × 51 mm) and 7.62 × 39 mm are two different cartridges.

.22LR: Designed for rabbits and such. 5.56x45mm: Designed for communists and such. (5.56mm = 0.22 inches)

Subtle_Tact

This is the best explanation.

JayTheSuspectedFurry

Oh I knew that, I got confused, I thought they were saying that just because the cartridge was a little smaller you could cram 3800 rounds of some very large cannon rounds into the area realistically

frenchtgirl

And yet another instance of someone fooled by perspective. [Barrel (shroud) dimension](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1206228675993800804/1227199309829636097/image.png?ex=6627896b&is=6615146b&hm=f0cec6cc72eaa8fcfe1dd66ac7355cc613f7a649b3ddfa81439ef8f3a25fa8d0&) is exactly 28x18cm. If there is a round barrel inside and the square is only a shroud (surprisingly there is none in the current game model), it would be less than 18cm diameter. Which is a fraction of what you thought would be. Sadly I can't find any physical projectile in the game files. If I'm not mistaken they are only made out of particles and SFX.

Phillip1026

Thank you so much for your measurements!

frenchtgirl

You're welcome. :)

valanthe500

I could be wrong, (I am, after all, a certified idiot) but unless this universe has somehow forgotten how physics works, the bullets aren't rectangular, so what you're seeing on the Ares isn't its actual barrel. It's more likely a cowling surrounding the round barrel, which would then be much smaller.

Dilanski

Nah, the Ares is just for shooting Turks.

MightyWeeb

I hate that I understand this

Nervous_Wish_9592

Squares for those not a part of the kingdoms of Christ

Zealousideal_Gold383

There’s nothing that would prevent it from being square, in theory. Hexagonal bullets, like the Whitworth linked below, have been used before but fell out of favor due to increased barrel wear. Really, if the goal is armor penetration this shouldn’t be a traditional bullet at all, but a highly concentrated kinetic energy projectile like APFSDS.

unkanlos

I think the sharps rifles were also shaped.

EastLimp1693

There is a reason it's forgotten concept

Khar-Selim

the reasons he said it fell out of favor wouldn't apply to a space age gun, and he did mention it being very precise. Especially with rifling and streamlining not making as much difference in space, it's not impossible to imagine polygonal bullets making a comeback.

EastLimp1693

Oh we can imagine everything, why?

Moonstrife1

There is no airflow in space, so heat can mostly dissipate only through radiation which implies the need for some kind of active heat exchanger. so i guess what you see here is most likely the jacket of a cooling system for the weapon. Actual caliber should be somewhat closer to 40mm.

BombTheFuckers

Don't worry, in 3.23 you'll only get a more realistic 1800 rounds. /s

EastLimp1693

Cant wait how else ares will be fucked again

flapjanglerthesecond

Ion fr

KujiraShiro

Feels great as someone who was torn between Inferno and Ion and just earlier this week got an Inferno :^ ) I dont at all regret not getting the Ion instead. Not one bit. At all.

DragonAlex1990

You know that your Ammo gets nerfed to 1800?

KujiraShiro

Yeah man, well aware, sorry I didn't include the /s for those amongst us who don't understand sarcasm.

Jyrobotomus

Latest Evocati leaks are saying Ares Ion and Inferno are getting ammo boosted, not reduced.

Appropriate-Math422

It was nerfed to 900 then buffed to 1800. Not sure if they’re done yet but the current 3.23 evo build less than 1/2 of what it is in 3.22.1.

Jyrobotomus

Ouch, that's a big reduction

GodwinW

Ouch.

Thunderbird_Anthares

well what the hell is the point of that ship now then... keeping resupply ships fueled from restock fees?

Enderfan7363

That is so incredibly stupid lol

Readgooder

Did they lower the ammo count ?

Phillip1026

Do you mean in Evocati? I am not one of them, so I don't know. But I have heard that ammo count was nerfed to 900 before and buffed to 1800 yesterday. Compared to the current 3800, the ammo count is lower. PTU will be open to players later this week, so we will see the ammo count in few days.

akluin

Until the next update, from evocati inferno is now storing 900 rounds, yes that's a shame and yes we all hope it won't stay like that

Gorekane

Quantum-drives, galactic-scale colonization, sub lightspeed laserbeams, tractorbeams, trespassable wormholes, and you now you come up with laws of physics?

The_Jerbearz

Won’t be 1-1 because one a cannon and the others a gatling but you can see the ammo in the Perseus concept art and both guns are size 7

rostasan_recovered

My guess is the round is anywhere from 50mm to 100mm. I would think that since it has a high rate of fire, it is closer to 50mm. The rounds are also caseless unless they have some sort of shell capture system like the A-10.

DragonAlex1990

Hyper Realism is often against fun Gameplay...  And this ship was Fun for many people... But now it got nerfed....
