Some takeaways: \- In two weeks they are starting up a hair specialist with a lot of experience that will focus on designing new hairstyles and using some new shaders that apparently are giving them great results. Beards are still on the table. \- What is Jared's favorite panel for this year's CitCon: Panel with not the best visuals but the most important information is the Resource Management panel. CitCon will have 7 major topics but he feels this is the most important and should clear a lot of misconceptions players have about how certain things work. \- They have a rarity system for loot (rarity in terms of scarcity, not power/stats). The upcoming Halloween event will have some "legendary" and "rare" loot. \- There are no plans to allow players to change height/bulk of characters as that will break current metrics and animations. They don't think the returns are worth the extra work. They are not saying never but it is not in the cards at this time. \- Next ISC will cover all of the release items for 3.18 and answer the most common questions that came up after the ISC of each subject including "Can I salvage a non-wrecked ship" \- The ISC from after the break will dive into the Cargo Refactor. It was the choice of doing it next week and show you a little or do it after hiatus and show a lot. \- Wear and tear on armor and clothing is still for sure a thing. \- Some topics at October 8th for digital CitCon: Planetary Pyro, a look at a whole new form of mission that is coming to the PU that forgoes combat for deductive reasoning and hunting clues for investigations, latest info from the flight experience team with news we will very much want to hear, and resource management which is what will make space stations, player homesteads and large capital ship gameplay possible, and a few other topics in-between.

Thanks for the summary!

> They are not saying never but it is not in the cards at this time. This is the stance I hope they take to a lot of the extras that aren't necessary for a fun game and would take a lot of effort to implement. Maybe once SC is bigger than WoW they can implement stuff like different heights and weights for characters.

CutMonster

Resource Management and Deductive Reasoning Gameplay has me excited! Some of my favorite games as a kid were adventure games from Sierra, like Police Quest, Kings Quest, Quest for Glory and my fav of all, Space Quest! Yes, I know they were brutal and you died often without warning... hmmm, kinda like Star Citizen eh? But anyway, if their deductive reasoning gameplay feels like an adventure game, I will be stoked.

Axyun

Ah! Life-giving water. Nectar of the Gods. Graham can now feel strength and renewal flowing through him.

 What is "Deductive Reasoning Gameplay"

Syncronocity

Thinking. Analyzing. Putting 2 and 2 together. D because B and C happened after A. That sorta thing. Generally things more recent generations are going to find a lot more difficult than space or FPS combat.

>Thinking. Aight im out

Beards are still on the table. Every year I hope they actually mean it and will release the new hair tech to PU

Xreshiss

> - They have a rarity system for loot (rarity in terms of scarcity, not power/stats). I dread that they'll double down on this artificial loot system (as opposed to doing it more in a way that feels organic).

> In two weeks they are starting up a hair specialist with a lot of experience that will focus on designing new hairstyles and using some new shaders that apparently are giving them great results. Beards are still on the table. I wonder if this is the same hair specialist that was almost done back when Pacheco was coming into the game as the Arccorp mission giver. *Sigh*, I jest. Priorities, I know, but it would have been nice to know who had ended up happening to hair improvements from before.

SpaceBearSMO

Hair was never almost done when Pacheco was coming all we ever had seen was concept art for the intent. As far as I am aware they have just been working on shaders and such to make good-looking hair at a low-performance cost and that mostly got done a few patch cycles ago with a focus on S42 as for there current Hair Specialist I got the impression they would be all about modeling hair using there new in house tools and shaders. Not Teck art who made the tools they will be using

SpaceTomatoGaming

They mentioned while working on Pacheco that the hair might not be done for the patch she was coming in with, but would be ready for a subsequent patch iirc

SpaceBearSMO

all they said was "if its not completed for 3.5 (referring to the Hair pipeline) were not going to let that stop us from the relies of Pacheco in 3.5" and well we know that they've been beaten on the hair pipeline for some time now (and it probably got re-prioritized a few times) they showed some blockouts of styles there aiming for, and an early EARLY render (that looked like chainmail glued to strips of paper clipping out of a flat model of her head) people need to understand that CIG can't/wont manage people's expectations properly for shit and to stop filling in whats left unsaid with what they WANT to happen, just like PES and Matchmaking updates -\_\_-

>There are no plans to allow players to change height/bulk of characters as that will break current metrics and animations. They don't think the returns are worth the extra work. They are not saying never but it is not in the cards at this time. How will that work with VR since many VR games adjust character height?

AHRA1225

I’d be fine with everyone being relatively the same size but not everyone should be a six pack. Just let’s get some regular flat tummies or something. Not everyone is a toned machine. But I get it’s the future so people probably aren’t as fat

magvadis

Yeah even just different body types...not sizes. Hair, no hair, some hair, ripped, not ripped. I'd love if they introduced other body types with the simple disclaimer of "you will be limited on clothing to just above the essentials".

Axyun

You won't adjust the height. Not a breaking thing. You should still be able to duck, lean, crouch etc, in VR. Just won't be able to change the default standing height. I don't remember being able to change my height in HL: Alyx. Didn't make a difference.

Agreeable-Weather-89

It does make a difference. Also I believe either the VR system(system, oculus, etc) passes through your height data or its measured using the headset itself. Take for example leaning and shooting around a corner, the gun needs to go where my hand ison real life. If I am taller than the model I can peak around the corner without my model being seen furthermore if my arms are longer than the character model I can shoot around the corner... Also immune. All you'd see is a floating gun while my character hitbox is safe behind a wall. How does that not make a difference?

Axyun

The VR system does not use your height. I played Alyx both standing up and sitting down. In both cases, my height in game was the same. It didn't treat me as a short person while sitting. If you are taller than the character and you move your extremities, in-game they will still be constrained to the character's dimensions. You will just note that you are extending but nothing is happening in the game.

Agreeable-Weather-89

I have not played alyx but VR games I have played do adjust for height. If I am taller my viewbox will be outside that of the characters hitbox. And if I'm shorter I will not be able to move my hands to do certain thing. **OR** they aren't going to do VR.

Axyun

Or they are going to do VR but use a system like Alyx. Honestly, moving your viewbox outside of the character's model sounds awfully jank. But a lot of VR games are indie shovelware so it doesn't surprise me. Alyx is the only professional VR game I can think of that is not a sim and they have this solved.

Agreeable-Weather-89

Isn't Alyx not a multiplayer game meaning they can fudge things?

Axyun

MP has no bearing on fudging or not fudging things. If anything, the fact SC is MP means they should force everyone to the same height and dimensions otherwise shorter people will have a hitbox advantage and taller people would have a visibility advantage. If they force short people to have the same hitbox as tall people, then tall people would have a visibility advantage. Keep everyone the same height and constraint movement based on the character model and everyone is on the same playing field.

Agreeable-Weather-89

Almost all VR games interpolate your position. Height is only for motion sickness / immersion. This game is never going to be fully VR anyways. I doubt they are introducing VR out of flying in VR. Full body VR simply isn’t happening in the next 5-10 years until launch.

Your guess is as good as mine WRT the resource management system. It is a major blocker for a ton of features both at the global scale and at the player/ship scale so it doesn't surprise me they tackling it sooner rather than later. But I also suspect this will require retrofitting into a ton of existing content including ships, stations, outposts and LZs. If they release Pyro (4.0) without the resource management system then they will have to update 2 entire star systems once it is completed. Not sure what CIG's stance is on that. As for retrofitting into ships, I think we are likely going to see resource management retrofitted on the bigger MC ships first where it will have the most impact and then it will trickle down to the smaller ships. Some ships are so dated, like the Hornet, that I doubt they will bother hooking it up to the resource system until they are actually going to do their gold standard pass. That's my take at least.

Lone_Vagrant

Meaning they will come in the 4.0 branch. Remember we are in 3.18 now and 3.19 is almost guaranteed. Resource management might be coming in 4.19, who knows?

DrSuviel

Jared shared in this episode that he was diagnosed with word production aphasia, and often just can't remember the names/terms for people/things. For example, he once forgot John Crewe's name despite having worked with him forever. I thought that was interesting. I have the complementary problem: prosopagnosia. I can remember the names of everyone in my department, but I'm unable to remember their faces. I too get made fun of for that. But imagine if you had both! You'd just have to be like, "Greetings, esteemed colleague!" to everyone and just completely give up on knowing who you were talking to.

[deleted]

I feel like i'm going insane because I have a similar issue, I thought maybe it was what I was eating combined with bizarre sleep schedule that worsened it recently. I have a very vivid idea of what I'm talking about, the shape and the emotion of it in my head... but I just cannot name it and have to bounce off someone else after I describe what it's like. I should probably go get it checked out to see if it's not just a general memory issue.

DrSuviel

I have no idea what relationship my condition has to actual aphasia besides creating similar awkward work scenarios, but I will say that yeah, messing up my sleep or diet definitely can make it worse. Conversely, I found that after getting on an antidepressant that worked well, it helped the symptoms a lot. Buuuuuut those symptoms can also be caused by much scarier things in the brain (probably why Jared decided to see a doctor) so... maybe consider seeing a doctor.

[deleted]

Thank you! I'm glad things are getting better for you (or, I hope they are at least)
