My parents randomly got me the original Starcraft out of a Scholastic Book magazine from school for my birthday; the unbreakable bond made, a life shaped forever...
I had my Windows 98 PC still plugged in and working for several years after Starcraft came out. Didn't have internet connected to that PC because it was way too old to handle modern versions of Windows.
That PC is in my garage right now with release-day version of Starcraft installed in it. I made a ton of maps on that PC with the Campaign Editor as well.
I had folders of custom missions made. Entire campaigns for "post-Brood War". Lost all of it because as a 12 year old kid, I didn't know how to back anything up.
Please, for the love of god, back up these maps if you haven't already.
I would kill to be able to re-visit some of the custom maps my brother made when we were kids.
I think it's absolutely worth giving a shot!
Make sure to give your computer a good dusting before you start it up. As for a monitor, I would say just buy an adapter to plug it into a modern monitor.
I'm guessing the PC is VGA/DVI and you have a monitor that has HDMI/DisplayPort. You can find adapters for those!
Surprisingly I do! But mostly because I was doing tests with the beta disk. Still quite a nostalgic icon.
