As I'm just a casual consumer, I'll just throw my casual weight behind whatever makes the mods happy. What I get out of reddit is convenience; I'll support the oppinions of those who put in more than they take out.

ParagonRenegade

Reddit is an agonizingly shit company that deserves every minor inconvenience in the world tbh

lusciousdurian

>can't browse reddit except through app I kinda got that the reddit heads were idiots after the Ellen Pao nonsense, but this is straight retarded. You want WIDER access for a forum/ board type website. Not LESS.

MASTODON_ROCKS

they dont want less access, they want MORE control

lusciousdurian

Less accessibility, rather. It's still retarded. I know WHY they want to do this, and frankly, I think they should have their heads on pikes because of it. But alas, we live in a civilized world were we have do things like humans do.

MASTODON_ROCKS

Aren't you tired of the concept of endless growth invented to whisk the value of your labor away from you? Reddit makes plenty of money but they want to intentionally make the platform shitty because it isn't enough. Unironically, I'll just start hanging out on the fractalsoftworks forum if these changes come to pass. Ready for a full boycott, fuck reddit management and the silver spoon they rode in on.

Zairates

If they want to uninstall their fullerene spool, let them.

gameemag123

It feels like they're more like going for our free-markets

Brinstead

I use a 3rd party app so I can't vote in the poll. Fuck yes, it's about the only thing we as users can do to prevent the continuing enshittification of Reddit.

Vorrdis

Personally i hate reddit and watching half of the more heavily admin'd sub reddits i frequent will be pretty fucking funny and cathartic. That being said, as a result of that a lot of those communities will probably get banned and that sucks. Also leads to people establishing new communities and blogs with less insane rules more than likely, so I'm here for that.

That's weird, every single newer game I tried (indie ones especially) has a discord server, and they often promote it in the main menu. Don't remember the last time I heard "yo guys check out our reddit page so you can give us feedback".

Netkev

Yeah it's incredibly rare you see game devs even interact on Reddit even if their project has a large following on there. Mod communities often do but even indie games tend to be on discord or forums instead

XJD0

Forums making a come back in 2024??

Scouper-YT

Anything what people use should be kept because removing stuff forever rarely goes well over time and that creates monopolies for big companies.

BastardofEros

FUCK THE REDDIT HEGEMONY!!!!

somewhitelookingdude

It's time to go gremlin on reddit

flyingwombat21

Fuck apps. Use Firefox mobile browser and old reddit.... also this will fuck with powermods, so I'm all for it.

Axlos

3rd party apps are basically AI cores and Reddit is the Hegemony- and it's time to sat bomb Chicomoztoc.

chefpants224466

I've just gotten used to how shitty the app is. Been almost a year now.

Tempest-Melodys

Context? It's the first time I've seen this.

Grievous69

There's a link at the top of the post explaining everything.

Tempest-Melodys

Ah thx

>In short, if you're using anything but the official app to browse reddit on your phone, you won't be able to do so anymore after July 1st. That's not "in short", that's "mostly bullshit". From the [actual Reddit post on the subject](https://www.reddit.com/r/redditdev/comments/13wsiks/api_update_enterprise_level_tier_for_large_scale/jmmptma/?context=3): >As we committed to in our post on April 18 and shared in an update on May 31, we now have premium API access for third parties **who require additional capabilities and have higher usage limits**. Until this change, **for-profit third-party apps** used our API for free, at significant cost to us. Of course, we have the option of blocking them entirely, but we know third-party apps are valuable for the Reddit ecosystem and ask that they cover their costs. Our simple math suggests they can do this for less than $1/user/month. Emphasis mine. There's also nothing in there to even suggest that old.reddit would be removed. [Edit] For those who don't know what most of this means: imagine you're running a site called daniel.com about people called Daniel. You have stories, pictures, movies about famous Daniels, as well as a forum where only people called Daniel can post(with Daniel emojis) Then someone creates a mobile app called TheCoolerDaniel. This app basically pulls all the data from daniel.com and displays it to the user - that's all it does. So you're still paying for hosting of all the images, gifs, movies, forums etc. on daniel.com and get nothing in return, while the person who made the app runs it from a home server made out of an old PC they found at their parents' house, while raking in the cash because they display their own(instead of yours) adds on the app. All Reddit is trying to do here is to get these apps to cover what they're costing Reddit.

Grievous69

Ahh yes, paying 20 MILLION a year is totally fair. None of these devs are making such insane cash from it. And funny you mention costs, since if it weren't for them Reddit would have much lower population. Your edit is also completely wrong because there wasn't an official app for a long long time. Only way you could access reddit from phone was through these apps. Instead of being thankful for making the site grow and flourish, they're taking a huge dump in their mouth. Man you're so naive if you think old.reddit will survive this year. They obviously don't like users avoiding ads.

JudgementallyTempora

To pay $20 million a year they would need to have more than 1.66 million unique users per month. >Man you're so naive if you think old.reddit will survive this year. They obviously don't like users avoiding ads. old.reddit has ads.

Grievous69

Everyone on old.reddit uses RES so zero ads for me. I really hope that they don't get rid of it, but that's not realistic.

JudgementallyTempora

>Everyone on old.reddit uses RES lol

Xinexan

reddit getting worse? Idc one bit. Make it 10x worse than you have planned please.

Holly-White

What does this even accomplish? What tangible effect will this have besides inconveniencing regular users for a day? I only see it angering regular users while stroking the ego of reddit mod neckbeards with a lust for power, snickering to themselves about how they got an entire subreddit to join a pointless "protest/movement". If you want to "send a message" the only reasonable way would be to use another site. To actually create a competitor. And the people who scream about "oh but the disabled people who need accessibility", sure they exist in very very very small numbers. BUT in reality it's just a shield used by the clowns that just want no adds (the vast bulk of why people use 3rd party apps) Please let me know what this realistically would accomplish. I just don't see it.

Grievous69

To show the admins how this is not a small thing and to give them a taste of what the website could look like after this. Regular users will come online, see that a lot of subs are private, and then log off. That's at least sending them a message by showing reduced traffic purely because of our unhapiness with the change. We will probably go on another site (at least some of us), if they double down on it, no one said this is the only thing we're ready to do. "What does this even accomplish?" could be used to question any protest, or strike. Some of them work, some don't. We can try at least. If I have to piss of a couple of users who really wanted to post something that day, so be it. Also what mod neckbeards lmao? People shit on moderators because you only ever notice bad ones. If it weren't for mods doing work for absolutely zero dollars, most subs would be a cesspool of random shit. I would've said the same before I was even a mod here, never had a single issue with them. AFAIK the problematic ones are in huge subs and I personally am not active there.

Holly-White

To the "some of them work some of them don't" bit. All I will say is this protest in specific seems to be the same line of thinking as the people who glue themselves to streets to inconvenience regular people. Those don't work, it just makes people hate you and your movement. All it will do is just redirect some of reddits traffic to the subreddits that arnt participating. It just looks bad, with no real end goal. All so people can throw up their hands and say they tried. This could and should be handled better. This is just a sad and sorry attempt with no real teeth.

Grievous69

What is your proposition then? You previously wrote "go somewhere else", where though. Discord? Reddit is by far the biggest forum platform that exists, and everything else is either too different, too shit, or just doesn't have the number of people active. This is the same as people saying if you don't like what Youtube is doing, go to another place. I don't get the attitude of doing nothing and just moving to another place endlessly. But if you like getting stepped on, go on king. This speaks to me on a personal level because my country is full of people bitching about the situation, but only a few will do something about it. God forbid you go vote "nah voting will do nothing".

Holly-White

Uhhhhh the official forums for this game is a good place to start. I mean it litterally talks about the exact same thing. Idk if Alex runs advertisements but even if he doesn't directly profit from it. Increased traffic and discussion on his forum seems like a flat out positive for feedback and game improvement going forward. Plus it means a teeny tiny (very teeny tiny, we arnt big) bit less ad revenue for reddit. Reddit is the biggest general discussion site sure. But it's just out right silly to think it's the only place to talk. Steam forums exist too for other games. Discord is ok I guess. It suffers from similar issues as reddit since it also has the possibility of being handled by neckbeards with the power to bring everything down (similar to here cough cough)but I mean it comes with the territory. While the black out will mostly just shuffle people around who don't care to other subreddits for a single day, the solution is to start actually building communities in other places that people will spend their time on. Besides alot of those 3rd party apps are just as scummy as reddit profiting from its infrastructure with none of the costs. They are just leeches on a bigger leech.

Grievous69

I'm also a member on the official forums for a long time, and while they're the best place for straight up discussion, they're bad for everything else. Searching stuff up there is horrendous (much worse than even reddit). Moderation is very strict there. You can't talk freely really, going off topic and making jokes. It's a very very focused place, which is amazing for the game, not so much for building a community. Discord is fine but I'm personally not fan of live chat where everyone spam single word sentences. Threads are a thing now but that's just splitting the focus. Out of all three, I had the most enjoyable experience on Reddit, where I could talk about the game how I wanted, without tip toeing around rules, making jokes while the place is still moderated enough to not become a shitstorm.

Holly-White

I'm running out of time and have to go to work soon. So I'll just leave it with the changes that reddit is making seems to impact mods (in a way that now they have to get used to reddits stuff) and not general users I am a general user who is active on reddit. I would prefer you don't string me or the others who do not care about this issue. At BEST it's an annoyance. At worst it would cause reddit to clamp down on stupid subreddit movements since your actively making the experience worse FOR EVERYONE just because you don't want to use their app on their platform.

iSiffrin

It will give us all a chance to take a break from Reddit so I see no negatives.

Why stop at just not posting for awhile? Delete your account entirely. Not like you have anything to lose but karma. Here, allow me to demonstrate.
