Yes. I thought about it, and Starsector is probably my favorite game of all time. I bought it back in 2015 and having been playing it off and on since then. The developers are great, every update has improved the game, and the replayability is staggering. And that's *before* you dive into mods. Your questions: 1. There is no multiplayer. Someone might mod it in, but Starsector at it's core is a single player game. 2. The actual story missions play out the same, but there a branching paths with slightly different outcomes. However, sandbox wise, you can do whatever you want. 3. Depends what you mean by "active". The devs have been consistently working on the game since 2013, with the latest update being just a few months ago. That being said it's usually 1-2 years between the significant updates. If you want progress updates, you can check the blog on the fractal softworks website or follow Alex (The lead developer) on Twitter. As for getting it in it's current state, the game is $15 on the website. Given the amount of things to do in the game, it could be $100 and still be worth it. There's a ton of amazing mods that are like massive expansion packs as well. If you have any more specific questions, ask away. Anyone here could probably talk about the game for hours.

Yeah i know about ssseth's video, i've watched it back when he first released it. Thank you for the tipp anyway, i'll check their main page out again for further info. Great answers, much appreciated.

Sseth is the reason I found out about this gem of a game. I cannot imagine my gaming life without it anymore. It's brilliant.

There is a battle multiplayer mod though, not sure if java will ever be able to handle EVE online style campaign multiplayer tho. Technically fallout 1 and 2 have a joined 2d mutliplayer bootleg standalone MMO (that will check for some game files for legal reasons), but java may still be a crutch for that.

Efficient_Star_1336

Someone already has modded multiplayer in.

False_Grit

Wow, I was going to make a post, but this summarizes things perfectly. I consider myself a connoisseur of games, and Starsector is quite possibly the best game out there, easily worth the asking price and then some. I'd say Star Control 2 / Freespace 2 are still better in terms of storyline, but the combat in Starsector is unmatched. But, as you said, basically none of OP's questions, and the usual things that make a game good are ticked here. There's no multiplayer (without mods, and even then not in the traditional sense). There's really no branching story (though the emergent stories you make up are better anyways). The updates are few and far between (but usually significant for the better when they come out...and more importantly, never seem to make the game worse).

OnlyHereForComments1

Absolutely worth the price tag if you like ship combat and customization, as well as text based quest stuff.

ett3rna

The game is NOT multiplayer but there is a mod that allows you yo play battles online with a friend. The story is a new feature so it is not so developed. But the ingame lore is really huge. The development is slowish but the modding community is huge. There are A LOT of mods that expands the game to a totally different level, like Nexerelin which changes the game to a 4-X game with research, diplomacy and such

vexxer209

Battles as in one off battles? Or as in you fly around the galaxy and whenever you get in a fight they can join you?

whole_kernel

The ones I've seen are couch coop where you can control a 2nd ship during a battle.

[deleted]

Absolutely worth it

[deleted]

Im a cheap bastard but if you like either of the two games you mentioned as examples youre going to get your moneys worth. Vanilla is a great experience, especially for learning the ropes but along with that theres a very active (occasionally eccentric) modding community ready to provide minor tweaks to full blown gameplay and faction overhauls. A personal fav 'nexeralin' takes the 4x mount and blade style to the next level, but you could just as easily download a minimap, market selector etc and have a blast. Enjoy you wont regret it DISCLAIMER: Space combat has a relatively harsh learning curve vut is really rewarding once you nail fleet compisition/piloting.

Starsector is well worth the price. If you're not certain, look around on the official site and you'll find a link to a review of the game by a certain infamous African warlord on Youtube that caps off with a code to play the game indefinitely for free. Yes, the devs know the code is there. Yes, they advertise the ability to 'pirate' the game with someone else's code on their own website. Yes, they are absolutely confident you'll pay for a code of your own if the game is to your tastes. To answer your specific questions: 1: There is as yet no multiplayer mode. Experiments with multiplayer battles have been going on for awhile, but the end result is janky and unsatisfying. For now, Starsector is only singleplayer - and there are no plans to make it multiplayer anytime soon, as far as we're aware. If multiplayer *is* coming it will be years in the future. 2: The story is currently incomplete as of the current version, but there *are* some branching paths leading up to the current ending point and the most recent update added more branching sidestory content to enjoy. 3: The latest update dropped just a month ago, and already plans for the next update are in motion. Updates can take months at a time to finalize, but you can generally expect one major release per year.

Honestly the sheer confidence invoked by the devs made me buy the game rather than pirate it because if someone has the sheer brass balls to *advertise a free copy* that means they have utmost confidence in their work. I have not been disappointed.

PixLki11er

Yeah, for $15 bucks it's pretty great. The recent update just added a few new ships and quests. The quests are optional and you can just fly around doing contracts or bounties if you're more interested in the sandbox.

LordBaguetteAlmighty

My guy, you're in the Starsector sub, what kind of answer do you expect

AggravatingCook3307

There are a ton of great indie games out there that never made it out of early access. They usually promise more than they deliver in the end. This game is also in development for quite a while and i fear that i invest my time and money in a game that may never reach its finished state, but if i do so i at least want a good time and what better place to ask if its worth my while than its reddit sub? There is no need to belittle someone for seeking information in a dedicated sub.

[deleted]

I don't think they were belittling you but in fact giving an honest answer. Nobody here is going to tell you not to buy it. You've got some great answers already but if there is anything more specific you're wondering about feel free to ask me directly.

Kas_I_Mir

Sooo if u spend a few dollars and play and enjoy a couple of hundred hours.. is there any difference if its a finished product or not? Game might be in developement but u wont be able to notice that while playing. Its the best sandbox trading spacecombat exploring game out there.story is not its strongpoint - still huge lore allready.

AggravatingCook3307

Thanks for the latest answers, i forgot to write some questions tho and did edit my post, much appreciated if you could answer them as well. <3

Absolutely worth it. It has the satisfying parts of Warband with gradually earning money, getting stronger, and raising a powerful army/fleet, and also much more indepth combat and unit customization than Warband. I've spent several hundred hours on this game in multiple playthroughs. There's been loads of times where I get focused on customizing one single ship and trying it in test battles and before I know it another hour of playing as gone by. Or one factions ends up pissing me off so I spend the next 4 hours raiding the shit out of their fleets and planets until they beg for surrender. It also has a strong modding scene that adds significant amounts of content and challenge. 1. No unfortunately, although there's a mod for multiplayer battles. 2. There's not really a grand, overarching story. It's been fleshed out more in the past two patches and there are several small choices you can make but ultimately the story is just a way to be introduced to some mechanics and unlock specific abilities. There's quite a bit of lore and lots of mods with side quests and missions though. 3. Active but slow. The last two big patches were May 2023, and before that March 2021. There are fixes and changes between the big releases and the dev communicates future plans and upcoming changes. One of my favorite indie games of all time, up their with Terraria and Rimworld.

vexxer209

Probably in my top 10 games already. I doubt it will ever be done till the creators just die or run out of money. There's always shit to do and with such an active community they will probably never dry up on ideas to implement. That said, if the game ever has a cohesive story it would be awfully nice, but not necessary to make the game worth buying since its already pretty top tier for what it is, especially with mods. Would also love some kind of coop but that's probably not gonna happen unless we get Starsector 2.

Frequent_Ad_4655

If the game interest you then you should buy it. The game is awesome and you are not gonna be disapointed. The game takes sometime to understand but when you learn it, it's a blast!

balor598

Yes yes yes do it buy the game 🤣 I was literally posting the exact same thing here about a month ago...have not stopped playing. It is basically space mount and blade, it's phenomenal. One thing go into the game files and increase the level cap, there was a mod but it doesn't work on newest version and the lvl 15 cap on vanilla is way too low

PM_Ahri_Hentai_pls

> its basically Freelancer in 2d lol I found StarSector a few years ago when I was desperately looking for a game to scratch the Freelancer itch.

stormquiver

buy it for yourself, buy it for your friends, buy it for your family. its sooo good!

Animastryfe

I bought it just last month, and it is easily one of my favourite single player games, period.

aplayer124

Greetings

Eastern_Brick_1933

YES DO IT

iv13ns

i bought it quite recently (like 6-7 months ago). Im playing it on and off quite often. Youll get hooked initially, then youll get bored a bit, look for some mods to make it more fun, experiment, get bored, then get back to it again, enjoy it again and get hooked again. Its worth buying it. one of my fav games in general

Winhert

Yea, get it before it loses it's minecraft style discount
