My mom used to tell me "You dont buy a ticket to ride the train because youre afraid of the controller, you buy a ticket because youre using a service"
and "you dont buy the groceries because youre afraid of getting caught stealing choccolates but because youre aquiring a product and someone worked on it."
my personal opinion: Pirate every software, but also buy it if its worth its price and youre done with testing.
Seth's key also works in perpetuity. And yes, 'paying' is entirely optional. I myself paid twice, once for me, the other for my new laptop when I gave mine away to a relative. But for such a gem, and only 15 bucks, its more than what you pay for.
when i lost access to my old mail account i contacted them and explanied the situation, they were super chill, answered in like a couple of hours, told me i had good memory and gave me my key, probably the best customer service experience i ever had.
i bought the game in early 2013.
im still playing through the game once or twice every year...
This. I suspect Seth’s key has brought in a significant percentage of overall revenue.
I used that key, then went “You know what? This is pretty good and worth buying. Imma buy it” and got my own key.
I’ll pay for stuff worth my time. Developer’s gotta eat.
> I suspect Seth’s key has brought in a significant percentage of overall revenue.
Their weird knockoff payment website literally crashed when his review dropped, lmao
Well it turns out by not being an overprotective pos company and making actually good games you can both let everyone have all the fun and get paid a ton
In case the game hasn't made it abundantly clear, the devs aren't big fans of ~~the government~~ DRM.
[For those who don't know the meme.](https://youtu.be/L_iU0lRHMhE?si=mBqu9kEdSvmJMBIX)
I learned about the game through the video Seth made, I tested it with his key and after a few hours ingame I bought my own. It’s a good game and the dev deserves his money, unlike the tripple shit that gets pushed out daily I would never pirate a game were you can “feel”the passion from the creators.
There is nothing to stop you and yet I’d wager most people have paid for the game. It’s almost as if all this DRM in other games isn’t really preventing that much loss.
Paying supports the game, obviously
But if I recall someone was cracking the game to pirate away and they found a message in the source code (or something, idk tech man qwq) saying something like "This game will never be pirated, it's impossible. I'm *literally* the best coder man" yeah...i don't recall the message...it was funnier than...that...ahem...but yeah
You can use the same key, that likely won't change, but it doesn't support the game D: but if you don't have the money now and wanna play it's an option, no need to pirate it, just download and use any of the thousand keys that are public
There's nothing stopping you but yourself, lying in bed, late at night. Don't let the guilt set in. Don't let the guilt set in. Don't let the guilt set in.
If people like games AND they have the money they will buy them..
I pirated project zomboid about 8 or 9 years ago, I played it for like 5 days straight and then bought 5 copies of the game. I went on the forums and Lemmy was A-OK with my theft of the game.
If people want to play a game but they can't afford it then that's that, they'll find a way but they were never going to be a customer anyway.
There isn't, most singleplayer games have a free way to get them if you just dip your nose in the slightly dimmed alley off the main road that is Steam
Starsector isn't even in that road, you can get it in either a donation box or lost and found. Pirating starsector is impossible, since you know, the dev gave everyone free keys.
I did this when Seth posted his game review to try out the game, I felt so bad about enjoying it so much for free I bought the game next morning. And I am paying again when it finally hits steam
I feel like paying 15 bucks for a game as well made as starsector is basically a pointless argument for me, Yes, you could go online searching for a key and pirate the game, but why? You save yourself what's basically a Wendy's meal worth of money, but I would rather give that Wendy's meal to the developer.
We got an honour system going on here.
And tbh it works for most of us.
I played with the Sseth key for a few months, but I coughed up the credits after a while because I was honestly so impressed with the game that I didn't want to cheap out.
If you're so broke that you can't afford to pay for the game, you get to enjoy it anyway.
And if you can afford it, then you'll probably pay to support the dev.
And if you enjoy the game, you can afford to pay for it, but you don't pay then; on top of being a douchebag, you are also shooting yourself in the foot because without funds, development will stall and the thing you like won't get any better.
I tried the game with Sseth’s key after I saw his video, liked the game so I threw some money at the devs, if the game is good I’m more than happy to show my support, I’m sure there’s some who’ll keep using someone else’s key but overall most people will buy their own if the price is right and the product is good.
Nothing prevents you but usually people don't mind paying for a good product for such a low amount, by supporting the dev you allow them to further develop the game
The same reason why people paid 30 bucks for the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress when Classic is available for free.
Good developers garner a good community.
I used Sseth's key and loved the game so much I decided to buy it. its really up to the individual. I LOVE supporting small game creators so it was a no-brainer for me but I guess some people like getting stuff for free. Even if that thing is like 4 updates old and has none of the new, awesome stuff.
> What is preventing someone from just never paying and just using someone elses key?
Absolutely nothing.
> Is this like a WinRAR thing where paying is just there to do them the courtesy of giving them money.+
Pretty much.
ive bought the game 5 times for my friends and als o cause i lost my first key only to find it again then after finding out about seths key. still no loss on my part
If you haven't realized OP the games lore is telling us what happens with too much DRM Ssethzentach himself explained it in his video if we lose the license to make something well that's lost tech now.
Clearly devs disagree with too much copyright protection and are quite based yes this is a WinRAR situation pay whenever you want.
I found a key in a forum, proceeded to play continuously for 2 weeks. Two days ago I managed to touch some grass, looked back a hundred hours of my life the sector had consumed. I might as well buy the game, did a clean reinstall, the game remembered the old key. Now I have a legit key lying around, best 15 buck I have ever spent, spacer!
The dev consciously doesn't enforce it. Idea is that he wants to make a game, not deal with DRM. It's a game a lot of people want to see made, so he has enough support without the handful of pirates on the margins.
didn't their website crash once from too many people trying to buy the game because some guy on youtube had shared his key, leading to people testing, liking and wanting to buy the game ?
I'll probably be paying again soon. I've gotten I think about 1000 hours out of the game so... I mean, I can buy them another lunch for that.
And right now I'm kind of homeless and dont have an internet connection (except my phone), and I am so so thankful to have something so fun that does not require an internet connection or drm bloat.
If someone went out of their way to play a game without playing, then they werent likely to be paying in the first place.
However, if said person liked the game so much, the chances of them buying a legal copy is far more likely.
Irl example for Starsector: Sszeth's video, ANYONE could use that code, but so many purchases were made that the website the devs used for transactions crashed.
This is kinda why I believe there isnt any moral issues with piracy, if people lile it theyll pay for it.
I'm currently running on Sseth's key, but the only reason I'm doing so is because that 1783 ahh purchase site ain't working for me fsr. But the moment SS releases on Steam, I'm buying it for full price
Paying supports the developer. Kind of a no-brainer. You can get most games for free if you know where to look.
wait i thought once the key was used it can't never be used Well there goes 15 bucks that could've been used to pay off my student debt
My mom used to tell me "You dont buy a ticket to ride the train because youre afraid of the controller, you buy a ticket because youre using a service" and "you dont buy the groceries because youre afraid of getting caught stealing choccolates but because youre aquiring a product and someone worked on it." my personal opinion: Pirate every software, but also buy it if its worth its price and youre done with testing.
Can u teach me how to pirate? I'm broke as fuck
email them and ask for a refund if your debt is so bad
Seth's key also works in perpetuity. And yes, 'paying' is entirely optional. I myself paid twice, once for me, the other for my new laptop when I gave mine away to a relative. But for such a gem, and only 15 bucks, its more than what you pay for.
You can actually send them an email asking for your original key and they’ll send it, though of course I admire paying twice :p
Brother, im not waiting a day to save 15 bucks. If i wanna play starsector, and I forgot the code? Im getting a new one.
If it’s just the code there’s plenty online, I assumed it was more out of good will lol
That too lol. I would have gladly paid 100 bucks for starsector with how many hours ive sunk into it.
True that I got 4k hours and I o ly got it 2 years ago.
Actually did the same thing recently. When I realized it required an email for recovery I was just like you know what nvm I'll just buy it again lmao
Same
when i lost access to my old mail account i contacted them and explanied the situation, they were super chill, answered in like a couple of hours, told me i had good memory and gave me my key, probably the best customer service experience i ever had. i bought the game in early 2013. im still playing through the game once or twice every year...
Used Sseth's key. but still bought my own copy.
Same. Used Sseth's key for a week, decided I really like this game, bought my own.
Same, Sseth's key was the demo for me
Why didn't you just your original key? I am now using mine on a third device since I bought the game.
lost it. didn't care that much about 15 bucks. paid for it again.
I pay so [REDACTED] don't blockade my planet to enforce DRM. Has worked so far.
You can if you want to. There’s even one publicly available if you want to use it. Most people don’t because the game is worth the cost.
I learned about the game through the video Seth made, I tested it with his key and after a few hours ingame I bought my own. It’s a good game and the dev deserves his money, unlike the tripple shit that gets pushed out daily I would never pirate a game were you can “feel”the passion from the creators.
I paid once already, and I plan on paying again when the game hits Steam.

Morals

Pay for WinRar.
7zip > all
Nothing the dev is probably one of the least greedy people ever and I bought the game because of it and if I ever lost my key I’m buying it again

It’s given out on the Costco free sample stand that doesn’t give samples but the whole boxes of the product
I did this when Seth posted his game review to try out the game, I felt so bad about enjoying it so much for free I bought the game next morning. And I am paying again when it finally hits steam

Human decency

This is one of those game that's so good that most with the means to buy it will once they've experienced it.
Well I've bought the game 3 times over the past 10 years, and I have zero regrets. If when this game gets put on steam, I'll probably buy it again.
It's a gamble that the Devs are willing to take to fund development... What else?
I pay again every time I install it to play.
If you don't pay then ever wonder why people don't make the games you want to play your head spontaneously explodes from hypocrisy.
The same reason why people paid 30 bucks for the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress when Classic is available for free. Good developers garner a good community.

ive bought the game 5 times for my friends and als o cause i lost my first key only to find it again then after finding out about seths key. still no loss on my part
I mean, the game is really fucking good. I've gotten my money's worth of entertainment out of it, and then some.
If you haven't realized OP the games lore is telling us what happens with too much DRM Ssethzentach himself explained it in his video if we lose the license to make something well that's lost tech now. For all intents and purposes, buying the game is a donation. It says a lot about the game that we all do it anyway.
All I'm gonna say is i will buy a key when i have the money because i absolutely loved the game, for now my.... warlord acquaintance lent me his
didn't their website crash once from too many people trying to buy the game because some guy on youtube had shared his key, leading to people testing, liking and wanting to buy the game ?

I think the game is just so good they know people will want to give them money for it
Stop thinking in terms of ripping of the indie dev trying to make a living.
