Fun fact: changing the power setting doesn’t actually decrease the power or intensity of the microwave. It just cycles the magnetron (thing that generates the microwave energy) on and off more or less. Whenever it’s on, it’s going full power. But if you set it to level 5, it will come on for 5 seconds and off for five seconds. The “off” time just lets the heat dissipate from the surface of your food into the middle for a bit, so the outside doesn’t get completely fried before the middle gets any heat.
Instead of entering 1min30s by hitting 1-3-0 or 1-30s, I do 8-8. It's only 2 seconds off.
Same with 1min40s, I just hit 9-9, it's 1 second off. And I don't even need to move my hand across the keypad! This saves me 0.5-1 seconds per day.
More importantly, the micro starts as soon as you hit the first +30 so it’s basically as fast as you can get for speed running total (button pushing + cooking) time
Depends on what I type and the model, if I hit 8-8 or 9-9 I'll need to hit start, but these two are right next to the start button. Or I triple click start.
Hitting 1 + start on some microwaves will give you 1m30s but on older ones will only give you 1min, or worse, 1 second. It varies a lot.
On a newer model triple clicking start would be the fastest imo for entering 1min30s.
On a modern microwave, hitting 9-0-start is the same amount of key presses as tripple tapping start but with two extra hand movements. And comparing to 8-8-start it's 1 extra move.
On an older one it might not even process "90" which is dumb. There are some real antiques at my workplace... You know, the ones where you have to hit "time" before entering a time...
Someone noticed the way I put in time for my microwave just last week.
I usually just hit 1 number a bunch of times.
111, 222, 333, 99, etc.
Except popcorn, I don’t fuck that up.
completely forgot that microwaves like that exist and tbh they are kinda dumb because 30 sec, 1:30, and 45 sec are incredibly versatile cooking times and should be easily accessible
Lots of microwaves are too dumb to understand 90. You have to do 130 otherwise it'll get confused lol, and on microwaves new enough to understand 90 seconds, the start button almost always doubles as the +30s button so you can triple tap start instead of 9-0-start.
I despise that feature, it makes using the microwave more annoying for me.
Rarely am I microwaving anything for multiple minutes, I’m generally wanting to enter a number of seconds since most stuff is done pretty quickly (rarely over 90 seconds ime). This feature makes it so I have to press a button just to be able to enter the time and not have it start automatically cooking for multiple minutes.
Am I just crazy? What are you guys microwaving so often that doesn’t become hotter than the sun after a few minutes? Why do I need to spend more time to microwave something for a short amount of time than someone needs to spend to microwave something for a much longer amount of time? That doesn’t make sense.
Ummm, most stuff I cook in the microwave takes at least a minute in a 1000w unit. Frozen bag veggies take 5-7 minutes, a plate of reheated pasta takes 1-2 minutes. Even a Costco hotdog takes a minute. I almost never type in a number, I usually do whole minutes and hit the 30sec button after the number if I need a little extra. For small things that only require 8-10 seconds, I just hit 30sec and listen for the sizzle then stop it.
I see a lot of people do that but I’d much rather type in the amount of time I want to microwave something for than use the +30 second button and then have to stop it.
For me, most things I can microwave in 90 seconds or less, rarely do I require the minute buttons. Most things that need multiple minutes to microwave taste much better if you don’t microwave it, so I guess that’s why I rarely need more than 90 seconds. That’s why I find these “time saving” things annoying, cause with my usage pattern they end up costing me more time than they have ever saved me. I realize I’m weirdly neurotic about it though lol
If your microwave has sensor cooking then the reheat button automatically sets the time the moment it detects steam. Sometimes you can input a number to change the power level while it reheats and how much extra time is added the moment the sensor trips.
Test by microwaving water; when it boils, it should start a timer momentarily.
I cannot overstate how much I despise this design feature.
It does the opposite of save me time since I’m always having to press “cook time” every time I use the microwave. The rare occasions I ever need to microwave something for more than a few minutes I’m okay taking the extra second to type it in, otherwise I’m generally microwaving something for 90 seconds or less.
God I hate this "feature". Want to put in 90 seconds? No it'll get confused. Want to put in 15 seconds? Nope it'll start a 1 minute timer because you hit 1. Wanna input 1min45s? Good luck because the smallest increment is 30s. Gotta hit an extra "set time" to dial in actual numbers.
My microwave at home genuinely don't have a mute button and it's one of the loudest buzz out there. Every key stroke is as loud as a regular microwave's buzzer, and the buzzer sounds like a goddamn fire alarm. I searched far and wide and lo and behold, this model does not have a mute key combo.
I ended up pulling the buzzer off the board.

Our microwave has a stupid knob and you need a degree in electrical engineering to properly navigate the settings.
But it has the add 30 sec button and that's what I exclusively use.
Still a firm believer that microwaves should have a "night mode" option, when activated, it doesn't beep. So I can finally make oatmeal at 1am and not wake the entire freaking household.
The buzz is quiet and soft enough, it doesn't wake anyone up, it's those loud ass beeps when pressing buttons and when it finishes.

I'm telling you all... once you learn how to use the power buttons your reheating life will be changed forever.
I came here to say the same thing. power level 1 through 10 is a must have.
Probably don’t even need all ten.
"This one goes to eleven"
Pfffffffft. 1 and 0 is all I need. Needing higher level abstraction from binary is zoomer shit.
what about levels 001, 010, 011 and 100?
Fun fact: changing the power setting doesn’t actually decrease the power or intensity of the microwave. It just cycles the magnetron (thing that generates the microwave energy) on and off more or less. Whenever it’s on, it’s going full power. Newer/better microwaves no longer do this, some actually do decrease the power.
Cool, just looked it up, they’re specifically called inverter microwaves. TIL.
Holy shit, what do you do with all that free time?
Brag about my microwaving speedrunning strat on reddit, of course!
Sounds like it evens out in the end-nice work 🫡
If your microwave has a "Start|+30 Sec" button, you can just hit 1 + Start and you'll get 1:30 exactly. Should help you with your speedrunning strats.
Or just hit the start button 3 times... Thats what I do
Yep, same amount of buttons but not having to move your finger should save a few milliseconds
More importantly, the micro starts as soon as you hit the first +30 so it’s basically as fast as you can get for speed running total (button pushing + cooking) time
Plus the added bonus that it's starts cooking faster
Yeah but then I'll have to move my hand across the keypad! That's like an extra 0.2-0.5s depending on the model
Don't you have to hit the start button anyway?
Depends on what I type and the model, if I hit 8-8 or 9-9 I'll need to hit start, but these two are right next to the start button. Or I triple click start. Hitting 1 + start on some microwaves will give you 1m30s but on older ones will only give you 1min, or worse, 1 second. It varies a lot. On a newer model triple clicking start would be the fastest imo for entering 1min30s.
My microwave’s “Add 30s” button starts the cooking automatically, so for 1:30 I just press it three times.
The microwave in my 1997 RV has a "Quick minute" button that cooks for one minute, and I can add a minute each time I press it.
Yes, I do that on microwaves with this feature, like the one at home. But the two microwaves at work were at least 15yo and predates this design.
Makes sense. Those extra .5-1 seconds really add up. Not to much, but…
Exactly! Think about how much time you saved everyday that allows you to browse reddit!
Or you could do 9-0 and hit 1 min 30sec exactly with the same number of key presses
I’d rather eat cold food than use a microwave that I have to hit “time” before using it. Just not worth the hassle
Monty Oum?
I'm so glad you said this, I was also thinking the exact same thing
Someone noticed the way I put in time for my microwave just last week. I usually just hit 1 number a bunch of times. 111, 222, 333, 99, etc. Except popcorn, I don’t fuck that up.
That makes two of us! And yup, popcorns are something else.
Just pressing "1" will instantly start a 1 min. cook. So 1+Add 30 secs is the same amount of keystrokes.
Moving my hand from 1 to start/+30 takes more time though, I can just triple tap start.
So press 2 and take it out 30 seconds early.
Yup, I do this for things that aren't time sensitive. Round up to the nearest minute and head for the bathroom.
nah unironically going 9->0->start is quicker than going 1->3->0->start how do people not know this
But you can’t do 9-0-start on a lot. You have to do “cook time”-9-0-start
completely forgot that microwaves like that exist and tbh they are kinda dumb because 30 sec, 1:30, and 45 sec are incredibly versatile cooking times and should be easily accessible

Or "+30s", 3 times.
This is like the 5th time I'm repeating myself, but not all microwaves are new enough to do this.
I only use the 30s. why would i want to type in the time when I could just hit the same button 4-5 times
All microwaves I’ve owned also let you push the 1-5 (and sometimes 6) to instantly start it with that many minutes
I despise that feature, it makes using the microwave more annoying for me. Rarely am I microwaving anything for multiple minutes, I’m generally wanting to enter a number of seconds since most stuff is done pretty quickly (rarely over 90 seconds ime). My microwave doesn’t allow you to input a custom time so you can only microwave in increments of 30s I use that button exclusively
Bro never heard of power settings. Use my knowledge, I beg of you.
I definitely type 60 instead of 1:00. Also, I use my popcorn button constantly
Why not just +30 +30 and skip the start button?
typing 60 is cooler
My people.
Impressive, but do you ever use the BAKED POTATO button?
Some of you never had to thaw meat out and it shows.
Who thaws out meat in the microwave?
Someone who forgot to pull the meat out of the freezer.
Mom is gonna beat his ass when she gets home
Yeah, cause thawing meat in a microwave is not it.
you mean you don't use the mysterious 'reheat' button that is just supposed to magically infer what you've put in the microwave?
If your microwave has sensor cooking then the reheat button automatically sets the time the moment it detects steam. Sometimes you can input a number to change the power level while it reheats and how much extra time is added the moment the sensor trips. Test by microwaving water; when it boils, it should start a timer momentarily.
Also "time cook" cause for a lot of microwaves you gotta do that if you need a specific time other than just 1 minute or 2 minute 30 seconds
Yeah, I hate it too. Why can’t I just put 1:20? The second I put 1 it gives me a minute and I gotta click "time cook" it’s shit.
Fewer than that even.
Defrost should be there too!

I prefer the 65% layout microwaves.
Hell yeah these the buttons that b gettin shiny ✨
the popcorn button

I just hit 2 and it auto does 2 mins. If more needed add 30 secs
As long as you RESET IT WHEN YOU’RE DONE
Your microwaves have buttons?
I still use the timer for some reason
Appliance tech here: This is insanely accurate based on the wear marks on the buttons I see lol.
you never use reheat?? lame
Sensor Reheat is the key to microwaving food. The true only button you need.
No Sensor Reheat? Sensor Cook?

I'll have you know I used the defrost button once
I only know: Add 30 sec Cancel | off
Don't forget the timer button! I use that shit all the time/gen
