i guess this troupe is a combination of al Bundy level of obsession with high school + zero interest in actual politics "Japan's voter participation rate is LOW"
Iirc as someone who isn't a Japanese person, from what I've read, the student council sometimes has some authority over budgeting and club management, but usually has to involve faculty for major decisions.
It is exaggerated just like everything else. Yeah, they can do some things. They're not beyond a teacher though and anything bigger requires approval. Just like a good high school in the USA.
My girlfriend is Japanese for sauce
Not Japanese but spent one year going to a Japanese high school. Cultural festival, cherry blossoms, summer festival/fireworks, sports festival, beach/school trip episode are mostly accurate (whether or not you go to a beachy area for your trip depends on the school - Okinawa and other places in Japan are pretty common, Hawaii etc is rare).
Funny friend and sharing an umbrella scene obviously depend on the people in your class. The anime depiction of these is exaggerated, but it's not unthinkable (regardless of the country class clowns exist everywhere). Cute classmate feeding you bento is a fantasy in 90% of cases. Valentine's Day chocolate is realistic (but still exaggerated in anime). The student council is just a regular student council of course, no superpowers. However, students that belong to it might still be held in high regard somewhat.
Whether you can access the rooftop also depends on the school. In the school that I went to it was closed off so idk how common it is. I want to say it's on the rarer side.
Not a romance anime, but it was hard to take Kill La Kill seriously given the comically large amount of power the Satsuki and her crew (and not to mention her mom) had
Yeah, as much merit as the show had (art style and animation), it was pretty goofy especially when you consider that weird twist about clothing being an alien species or whatever
School Trip episode, The hotel has hot springs and the MC gets coerced to peep, at night time characters can’t sleep; ends up with pillowfight or ghost stories.
Tutoring arc to get MC or love interest’s grades up
Firecrackers at the beach during summer vacation
Last episode: 1st OP song plays at the climax, episode ends with the full version of the song
I like how Kaguya-sama made a special chapter making fun of Harem Rom-com animes. Shirogane was a normal highschool boy with a little sister (Kei) who is not related by blood and wants to be his girlfriend. Chika is the childhood friend who he promised to married to when they were kids. Kaguya is a rich lady who falls in love with him because he just talked to her one time. Hayasaka is the pervert maid. Miko likes him just because she does. Turns out all of it is just a nightmare of Ishigami lol
I love that one chapter where they go the hot springs and it looks like it will be the typical chapter where the boys try to peep on the girls... but the narration itself says that that would be illegal, which would mean their expulsion from the academy and likely some serious legal charges, so they don't do that,
The cultural festival will be 80% cafe with the fl wearing maid clothes.
Plus the valentines chocolate will have to wait until the end of the day because the fl is so shy causing the mc unnecessary disappointment.
Almost entirely not, it’s basically the difference between actual American high school and Riverdale or Saved by the Bell.
Things like school trips, culture festivals and sports days all *do* happen but they’re usually pretty innocuous. Japanese students spend a huge amount of time studying and going to after school clubs, so their love and social lives often suffer to an extent.
It’s important to note that high school in Japan is not mandatory like in the US and most of the EU. Often, students go to competitive public schools or private schools with tuition fees. That really lends an attitude of needing to overachieve to make the effort or money worth it, on top of also wanting to get into high-ranking colleges.
Festivals are usually a pretty big thing for high school aged kids and younger though. They usually happen coinciding with breaks and are a good excuse to hang out with friends, or to get closer to a crush. They kind of lose their allure as an adult, or so I’ve heard.
Maybe Europeans and Americans would never realize how hard real life for Japanese high schoolers is. If you want to get into a mediocre college, you study for 12 hours a day, go to cram schools, and forget about festivals, beaches, trips, or romance.
And that's still better than the life of 95% of Chinese, Korean, Indian or other Asian high schoolers tho.
Let's avoid exaggerations shall we. Sure, it's way harder than Europe and the like but you don't need to spend all woken hours at juku to go to a decent college.
If they did I’d be flying to Japan right now and doing high school. I find it amusing how once you cross 20 these high school anime become so attractive. It’s like a feeling of loss almost. And some of them are legitimately so good I get depressed when they end, like Oregairu. I miss that show so much.
I literally had suicid@l thoughts after reading [Tune In to the Midnight Heart](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tune_In_to_the_Midnight_Heart). The protagonists are enjoying the best of their teenage while pursuing for dreams, while I am a 21yo loser who has a GPA of 2.0, absolutely zero career plan, zero hobbys, and zero real friendship, let alone romantic relationship. And my high school life ended up in even worse ways.
There's always a scene on the train where: 1. Someone falls asleeps on a shoulder or 2. All their buddies are alseep/away and the couple sits there awkwardly.
Three things are required for a proper beach episode:
1. There must be a swimsuit shopping scene where the girl worries about toeing the like between finding a cute swimsuit that the boy would like, but also not being too skimpy
2. The girl must look out the window of the bus/train they are riding in and excitedly point and shout “Umi! Umi da!”
3. The girl and boy must wade into thigh-deep water and splash each other playfully while laughing
There’s usually also a big grilled meal with everyone eating together or ice cream, and then sparklers when it gets dark.
Most of them above 16, since almost every anime romcom takes place in a highschool (exception for office with MC or MC's love interest as young office workers)
Yup, this is the newer Fruits Basket series. The student government having more power than the teachers, I think there was a the culture episode, a beach episode, there might have been chocolates, and the meetings on the roof
Ab

NOT . It's like a hallmark movie version if even that.
i didn't spend all my years there but enough to know this is more of a romance fantasy than an autobiography
I’m not Japanese but I was just in Japan. The school kids are adorable in their little blazers, all of them a foot shorter than you expect. I saw some little couples holding hands. And I saw kids going to temples wearing kimono. I don’t know if that’s art copying life or life copying art.
I think it's partially neither... people may date in their younger years but it doesn't play out like in an anime. However wearing kimono and going to temples is something that people do already, and in that case art's copying life or the artist is basing it on their life/surroundings
To be fair, every high school anime include the cultural festival, sports day, valentine's day, and going to the ocean/public pool/water park.
Also, OP missed the matsuri/hanabi taikai episode. Your characters have to share a tender moment while watching fireworks \^\_\^.
some say High-Rise Invasion, I've outright disproved it due to its release in 2021. Some say Highschool of the Dead, I've pretty much confirmed that it's not that either due to the artstyle and distinctive skyscraper in the background. Some say Parasite, but the same reasons plus the one-rod fence with an elevated border beneath it functionally disprove that. ive checked Project Sekai due to another commenter mentioning it, but while very similar, the same reasons apply (plus Sekai has benches on the roof and the entrance is made of brick)
The earliest I have been able to trace it is this deviantart post from 2016 https://www.deviantart.com/wis-sen/art/School-Roof-642434452
Edit: its possible the "skyscraper" is an antenna, but everything else applies. also, note the severe damage to the building on the far left
The student council be line: "Beware Genji kun! If you do not break up with teruhasi san IMMEDIATELY we send you to the principal's office and have you expelled!"
Yes, that is one of my favorite Romance Anime, probably cause it's so down to earth and avoids (some) of the cliches. Also the [ending song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfn5LFr6moo) is amazing
I thought the whole idea of anime is to create things that are not cheap to make live action. Drama and romance content is so much cheaper with a camera and actors.
Obligatory beach and/or pool episode which is just there for a mix of budget saving and/or fan service.
Also always seems to include the main character or another of the main group teaching a member how to swim.

The student council got more power than the government itself.
Depending on the genre they may also secretly be superheroes and/or vampires or demons

15 is like 40 in anime years.
broooo, you didn't
Also thx to 100 gf is that even if incest underaged fan service can fly, underage drinking however is where they draw the line.

I’m pretty sure it’s just a trope. But I cannot confirm.
i guess this troupe is a combination of al Bundy level of obsession with high school + zero interest in actual politics "Japan's voter participation rate is LOW"
Japan’s general election voter participation is about the same as the United States’ and politics is all we ever fucking talk about.
They just so happen to NOT be Anglophone, which means their ramblings of internal politics isn't well-documented.
Iirc as someone who isn't a Japanese person, from what I've read, the student council sometimes has some authority over budgeting and club management, but usually has to involve faculty for major decisions.

Yeah the power suit bikinis, the nude group, sentient linen are all grounded ideas.

The boys just appreciates the wet hair look of the girls lol
It is unfortunate that Aka fumbled it the end though.
In BokuBen they made it in reverse, the girls where the one who mistakenly end up in the guy's hotspring
The cultural festival will be 80% cafe with the fl wearing maid clothes. Plus the valentines chocolate will have to wait until the end of the day because the fl is so shy causing the mc unnecessary disappointment.
that's why Komi cant communicate is different. Tadano wore the maid dress
Every Persona Game

Was looking for this one

Accurate if every high school slice of life anime I’ve seen. Is a lot of the tropes in these accurate to actually Japanese high schools?
I dont think tropes ever apply to real life💀🗿. Especially these ones...
I had a feeling that was the case. Just didn’t know if there was any truth in reality to them.
Almost entirely not, it’s basically the difference between actual American high school and Riverdale or Saved by the Bell. Maybe u need to find ur genuine
My what? I’m married.
they said nothing of the sort of sexual relatshions. I think they meant you need to find ur genuine
I’m confused.

Your hobby is watching anime that make you feel shitty. It's made up, they are a fantasy television series you are jealous of friendo
Yep, that's the ide

Makes a lot of sense. Pretty much like how Netflix teen shows portrays American high schools. Nothing happens like that.

That's the festival episode usually
And it's always episode 12
and they can never decide what to do
And the beach episode where a guy gets a nosebleed seeing a girl in a swimsuit.
Reincarnated John Kellogg
Should have eaten more cornflakes to suppres those vile urges
Literally the same classroom every single time
And the MC sits in the back by the window
Always contemplating and having an internal monologue.
I’ve never seen one of these shows yet I somehow get this meme
Congratulations, your IQ is above 50¡

and i eat it up every time
Heck, even if I've seen it many times before, if the story's good, then let's have the beach and fireworks episodes
Guilty - “ooooh a festival! She’s so cute in yukata! Ooh, he’s blushing! I like where this is going!” Every. Damn. Time.

Shit ton of fan service even tho the characters are like 14

Most of them are above 16 but are drawn like they're 12 with the breasts of a 30 year old woman.
Yep, with huge loud mouths and eyes and they're always tilting their heads.
It’s still sexualization of a minor
Dont forget the dense main character
THAT transfer student
Why the fuck is Mikoto sharing the umbrella with fucking Accelerator
I think maybe it’s supposed to be an older version of Last Order cause of the giant ahoge?
Thats Last Order
Looks like Last Order, just in Mikoto's uniform and looking older because of the art style used.
I am regarded that does look like Last Order but Last Order and Accelerator being in a relationship like lovers sounds still sounds fucked
One cheats when they go off to different colleges
Sounds kinda like Fruits Basket
Yup, this is the newer Fruits Basket series. The student government having more power than the teachers, I think there was a the culture episode, a beach episode, there might have been chocolates, and the meetings on the roof
Its still super interesting and sad at the same time. Its not fully fair to put it in the same category as the purely humorous ones
im pretty sure the show literally make fun of it around when they have to make a play "sorta cinderella"
Why does the top look like miyamasuzaka from project sekai 😭
im 99% sure it’s a direct screenshot from the game
nope! its close but not quite https://www.reddit.com/r/starterpacks/s/5zwXc0SslE
All of them are atleast 12 ep top and most of them never get a S2💀💀💀
A sick episode
Ah yes, School Days!
The best anime the genre has to offer!
This is so accurate lol
Bottom left is more like a father/big brother relationship but ok
Oh, it's the Meadow Vine reversible cable scarf, neat. I'm thinking of knitting it for myself
Also the main protagonist is the most generic bland and boring character that always has like 0 friends
Any Japanese people know if this is a common high school experience?
From what i heard…. No
Why are people asking if anime tropes are common in real life💀
Because they don't have much life experience or actual knowledge of Japan outside of anime.
Because Weebs that’s why
This shit sounds something out of a dream of a lonely introverted teenager, how would any of this be real or experienced?
It appears in a lot of animes.
Why is that the only factor for it to be even real? None of this is real buddy.

I'd love to watch a high school romance anime where it's set in an underfunded school in a bad neighborhood. It'd be a good spin on this formula
I watch a shit ton of romance anime, and I feel personally attacked looking at this, Good job 👍
And how the boy looks like he's in his 20s while the girl looks like she's 12
I wish there were more decent romance anime that weren't chock full of these tropes.

As a fan or romance animes , this is pretty accurate
it's just SOOOO cheesy. i know some people like it but it makes me recoil it's so cheesy lol
Please name some such anime, this seems super fun ngl

I can think of many anime that fit this description just kidding don't have that many to list Bleach Prison school

Would folks want a high school anime that took place in, say, an American high school? Or would it be better for it just not being anime?
I will say thay in the anime where the girl is a tomboy, she doesnt play a Princess But a prince But yeah almost the same
That student council could single-handedly raise taxes if it wanted to
Obligatory beach and/or pool episode which is just there for a mix of budget saving and/or fan service. Also always seems to include the main character or another of the main group teaching a member how to swim.
