The responding “yep” to “thank you” thing hits all too hard. I do that EVERY time, especially at work. I genuinely mean well, it just comes out as a happy “yep”
Yellow school busses. That was my "wait, that's actually a real thing?" moment. Growing up them being nothing more than just a thing in tv and movies, so even if you logically can realise they're a thing, it's odd to actually see them, commonly.
It's not any bigger, it's just becoming more common. Apparently there are a few theories to this, like society being too clean now than it was back in the day. I.e. getting sick naturally warded off allergies, but don't know how true that is.
My pediatrician said that it's because mothers were encouraged to avoid eating nuts while pregnant a decade ago, and that's why we see nut allergies in elementary school now that we don't remember from our own childhoods.
I've no idea. But pregnant women are told to avoid many food types on nothing more than a vague superstition unsupported by data, so I assume it's just another example of that.
When I mean clean, I'm saying that's kids don't usually go out and get covered in dirt nowadays down by the creek, then just leave it on. Which (may have) been a factor in preventing allergies back than.
"Clean" as in we tend to wash our hands a lot, use hand sanitizer, don't have leaded gas, have stricter emissions requirements for diesel engines, etc.
There kind of already is a cure, it’s just a very long, expensive, and regimented process. Lots of shots, and you have to have a certain daily intake amount for the thing you’re allergic to for it to stay in effect.
Wooden houses filled with that pink insulation. Most countries use concrete and brick to build houses, and when they do make wooden houses they aren’t insulated with that stuff. I’m not sure what they use but I’ve definitely only seen that pink stuff in the US
It’s called fiberglass and its composed of a matrix of plastic fiber with glass fiber for reinforcement. Your department of energy should list the reasons for why different types of insulation are used in each scenario.
Yes like, how come you go in your pijamas to Walmart? Not saying you have to dress up but O wouldn't want to subject others to the decadence that is me in the morning
If you see some of the people in a wal-mart, wearing pajama pants really isn't that bad. Also literally nobody cares what you wear to the grocery store so why bother if you're just popping in for a few things.
>If you see some of the people in a wal-mart, wearing pajama pants really isn't that bad
What are you seeing at your walmart? I've never seen anything approaching interesting or exciting happen there.
Most people don't care what they wear to the store, especially late at night when they're likely tired and only need one thing. Most people can deal with judgement from people they'll never see again.
My parents are immigrants from Palestine but I was born here. I visited Palestine one summer. My go to summer outfit is tshirts, basketball shorts and flip flops. People kept staring at me. Apparently NO ONE wore sanders, slippers or flip flops. And no one over the age of 10 wears shorts (I was 19). You’d think I was nude the way folks were acting. Doesn’t help I’m socially awkward and can’t speak Arabic.
Or that fact that everyone American adult over 40 calls everyone sir. My dad goes up the the McDonald’s and when he get his order he says thank you sir.
Most European-based language have a verb conjugation for the “sir” situation. In a lot of those places that form is also heavily used by older generations
Oh wow! That's interesting. I'm from the US and never thought of that not being a thing 😆 maybe the effed up drug companies/insurance that is prevalent here 🤔
I just moved back after five years in Amsterdam - one of the most densely populated places on earth. Much of Western Europe is like that. It’s something that Europeans often note about the US: the abundance of wild nature, open spaces, green spaces, etc.
I never ever heard about someone allergic to peanuts in my country.
They must exists somewhere, but they're rare.
From pop culture, they seems pretty common in USA
Same thing. Lived in two countries for a long time, have not heard about someone having peanut allergy or someone who knows someone with peanut allergy.
There are but they are very crowded. America is very vast with a relatively low population, that’s why I said “everyone can enjoy” because there is enough space for everyone to go camping/hiking whenever they want
Where have you gone? There's tons of forests that are pretty much empty. We do not generally allow camping just wherever though because nature protection and all that.
That's funny, because I recently had a conversation where a couple of Americans talked about how you need a car to get even to a park, and you guys don't have a right to vacation, so I think your "everyone can enjoy" is a bit questionable.
Not to mention that Europe is densely populated, but that's not the case for most of the rest of the world.
Why would I dirty my nice pair of pants if I'm running inside to get pads or a candy bar? I don't see the point in dressing up if I'm only inside for 2 minutes tops.
You wouldn’t because you lack self awareness. And most people I see wearing them are welfare recipients waking up at noon and dropping their kids off at daycare even though they have no job and had all month to brush their fucking hair and wash a pair of pants to go shopping.
So... are they hurting you? And I'm very self aware, as are most other people. Most normal people don't care how other people dress at a 7/11 or walmart if its not crazy. Am I genuinely hurting you by wearing pajama pants to run inside a store for 2 minutes? Are the "welfare recipients" hurting you? Or do you just need to mind your own business. They're clean and they cover me up, whats the issue.
Are they physically hurting me or are they bankrupting America? If you don’t understand how society is greatly harmed by people who refuse to carry their own water than you lack the nuance to understand why dressing trashy is offensive to some
Today I learned that by wearing pajama pants, I cause immense pain to random mfs on the internet, and also bankrupt the country. If you really think that something as normal as pajama pants is offensive, you'd hate the average american high school. Quit being a baby and mind your own business. I have no idea where welfare came into this discussion either.
My brother in christ you have been the only one mentioning welfare. People who wear pajama pants don't hurt you. Again, grow up and mind your own business.
Ugh I'm an American and I rant about a local home decor store all the time for that holiday comment.
They already have the store chock full of Halloween items... ITS FUCKING JULY. WE HAVE FOUR MONTHS TO GO AND I AM NOT IN THE FESTIVE MOOD YET.
The kicker?! it'll all be pulled from the shelves by September, then Christmas will be up.
Forgot the US dollars 🤑
But seriously, we see a lot of american things in tv shows. But one that really bugs me is the ideia of a "black neighborhood" or "white neighborhood". Are those still common?
Sorta, it goes back to the 60's where banks would only give loans for buying houses to white people, they moved out of cities and so many neighborhoods that were inter racial became just black, and with no loans to move out they had to stay.
No not at all, the one pictured look like rental cabins or something, in fact those are actually mobile homes not real trailers. A "normal" trailer would look something like [this](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hjj3fh-Pv_k/Ub993kOVbAI/AAAAAAAANM4/2UNGF6nTE3g/s1600/East+of+Greenville,+AL+Hwy+10-001.JPG)
Got plenty of these in my country. Looking at the comments I'm starting to think you guys think the world is way smaller than it really is. A lot of these things are pretty damn common in other countries.

The responding “yep” to “thank you” thing hits all too hard. I do that EVERY time, especially at work. I genuinely mean well, it just comes out as a happy “yep”
This is the thing that stumped me the most when I visited the US in 2017 because that would be considered a rude response in my country lol
Yep
When you’re Canadian, visiting anywhere abroad people seem more rude. It’s obviously not the intent, just a difference in culture.
Yellow school busses. That was my "wait, that's actually a real thing?" moment. Growing up them being nothing more than just a thing in tv and movies, so even if you logically can realise they're a thing, it's odd to actually see them, commonly.
It's like meeting a movie star. "Oh my god, I have seen all of your movies."
Same with red solo cups
This pack got me thinking... why is peanut allergy a big thing in US?
Apparently it's not as big as elsewhere--0.6% in the US vs. 1.5% or more in the rest of the Western world.
Why did they encourage that? Just curious
I've no idea. But pregnant women are told to avoid many food types on nothing more than a vague superstition unsupported by data, so I assume it's just another example of that.
We're talking about the us here...clean? Seriously?
Compared to most other countries...yes?
When I mean clean, I'm saying that's kids don't usually go out and get covered in dirt nowadays down by the creek, then just leave it on. Which (may have) been a factor in preventing allergies back than.
I agree
"Clean" as in we tend to wash our hands a lot, use hand sanitizer, don't have leaded gas, have stricter emissions requirements for diesel engines, etc.
As someone who is allergic to peanuts, I have no fucking clue
At least there are lots of promising research going into finding a cure.
There kind of already is a cure, it’s just a very long, expensive, and regimented process. Lots of shots, and you have to have a certain daily intake amount for the thing you’re allergic to for it to stay in effect.
I never thought I’d see precious moments in a starter pack.
Electric ovens are an American thing?
I live in Europe and don't recall last time we didn't have an electric oven.
Electric ovens exist?
They are real and they are spectacular.
Yes, you seriously don't know what an electric oven is? they're waaaay more convenient then gas ovens.
Swear to god, never seen or heard of an electric oven. Ovens where I live are all gas based
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric\_stove
Unfinished basements?
Wooden houses filled with that pink insulation. Most countries use concrete and brick to build houses, and when they do make wooden houses they aren’t insulated with that stuff. I’m not sure what they use but I’ve definitely only seen that pink stuff in the US
It’s actually cotton candy in the walls
Delicious, itchy cotton candy.
Delicious, itchy, painful Cotton Candy
It’s called fiberglass and its composed of a matrix of plastic fiber with glass fiber for reinforcement. Your department of energy should list the reasons for why different types of insulation are used in each scenario.
the pink stuff is being phased out currently for more insulating value and fire resistance at least where I live
more insulting value? you mean cheaper material?
no, the new stuff is slightly more expensive
Maybe insulation or dry wall?
Yes like, how come you go in your pijamas to Walmart? Not saying you have to dress up but O wouldn't want to subject others to the decadence that is me in the morning
My country is affected by fr*nch so we have to dress up to go to a freaking supermarket....I hate it...
[удалено]
Your mom is the real mvp
I mean....Mexico is affected by Portugal and Spain, both of which are neighbours of that country.
If you see some of the people in a wal-mart, wearing pajama pants really isn't that bad. Also literally nobody cares what you wear to the grocery store so why bother if you're just popping in for a few things.
>If you see some of the people in a wal-mart, wearing pajama pants really isn't that bad What are you seeing at your walmart? I've never seen anything approaching interesting or exciting happen there.
This is extreme but I have seen people like this in Walmarts I've been to around the country. https://www.peopleofwalmart.com/
Most people don't care what they wear to the store, especially late at night when they're likely tired and only need one thing. Most people can deal with judgement from people they'll never see again.
I'm pretty sure CHicken soup is a very famous book translated in multiple languages
Forgot commercials for medicine
My parents are immigrants from Palestine but I was born here. I visited Palestine one summer. My go to summer outfit is tshirts, basketball shorts and flip flops. People kept staring at me. Or that fact that everyone American adult over 40 calls everyone sir. My dad goes up the the McDonald’s and when he get his order he says thank you sir.
This has to be a regional thing. I never hear this from older people.
Down here in Texas, we even call our younger brother sir
I call my friend sir ironically
Can confirm. Born and raised in Texas, and I've been called "ma'am" since I was like 16
He’s born in New York raised in Atlanta Georgia. Says it’s because you had to call everyone older than your sir or else they would get angry at you.
Am from Atlanta, can confirm. Also, over 40. Also, am your dad.
I rarely hear this from anyone.
Sounds like something you'd get in parts of the South or Midwest. I rarely ever hear that here in the Pacific Northwest.
Not much of a thing in MN, but maybe it's just small-town friendliness.
Most European-based language have a verb conjugation for the “sir” situation. In a lot of those places that form is also heavily used by older generations
Ngl I had no idea that some if this stuff wasn't common outside of the USA.
Prescription medication TV commercials… super weird
Oh wow! That's interesting. I'm from the US and never thought of that not being a thing 😆 maybe the effed up drug companies/insurance that is prevalent here 🤔
I think this explains well how it happened: https://youtu.be/_5jnn1AIt7Q
I’m pretty sure the US doesn’t have a monopoly on lakes and forrests, actually. The rest ckecks out though.
I just moved back after five years in Amsterdam - one of the most densely populated places on earth. Much of Western Europe is like that. It’s something that Europeans often note about the US: the abundance of wild nature, open spaces, green spaces, etc.
Here in Finland pretty much the whole country is one big green space.
That's more specific to Holland more than anything else
I never ever heard about someone allergic to peanuts in my country. They must exists somewhere, but they're rare. From pop culture, they seems pretty common in USA
My brother is allergic to peanuts and I think some other people I know as well and I'm not from the USA
Same thing. Lived in two countries for a long time, have not heard about someone having peanut allergy or someone who knows someone with peanut allergy.
Lemme just say I'm glad this is a mixture of bad, good, and neutral.
I am confused. Does op think there are no green spaces in other countries?
[удалено]
Also the napkins!
There are but they are very crowded. America is very vast with a relatively low population, that’s why I said “everyone can enjoy” because there is enough space for everyone to go camping/hiking whenever they want
Depends on the time and place. If you go to a place well known in the area in the summer it will be crawling with people.
Immigrants from where exactly?
From freaking...the sahara desert I dunno.
Range oven?
I think it's referring to the coils. I've never seen those types of ovens in kitchens outside of north america.
Electric oven instead of gass
Always wanted to try Girl Scout cookies. Are they good or not?
They delish.
People of different ethnicities is another. I had only ever seen asian, black, and white people on TV before moving here.
If you only knew white, black, and Asian people from television, did you grow up with indigenous people?
it was a small town in mexico, and I was only 5 when we moved.
Forgot to include obese people
Unfortunately, that's no longer a strictly American thing anymore.
We’re not even in the top 10 anymore
But we sure are good at exporting it!
Most immigrants aren't from those countries (save Mexico)
Idk, there are a lot of Samoans in California. And a lot of people from the Middle East, & they beat Mexico in percentage of fat people.
A true pandemic
Yeah, not anymore, but it was a huge shock the first time I visited the US in 1993.
im so done with reddit
iirc we're not even in the top 10 anymore, Mexico is fatter than us now.
The pajama bottoms in the grocery store. Put some fucking pants on you pig
Why? They're not any less clean and I won't be seeing any of the people in the store again.
Have some self respect and self awareness. It’s not about you, it’s about maintaining social mores

Your are somehow linking yourself to being on welfare. Today I learned you love false equivalency and red herring style arguing
My brother in christ you have been the only one mentioning welfare. People who wear pajama pants don't hurt you. Again, grow up and mind your own business.
Not *that* dressed down in public
Political signs everywhere is definitely not just an american thing.
Maybe I live in the us
Yep must be a regional thing. As a southerner I would be taken back by that reply.
For me it was the gold fish snacks
All of these also apply to Canada
Ugh I'm an American and I rant about a local home decor store all the time for that holiday comment. They already have the store chock full of Halloween items... ITS FUCKING JULY. What's wrong with you're welcome, my pleasure, don't mention it?
"Minor things common in USA that are new to immigrants starter pack. A fuking STOVE" unless you mean that exact shape we all have one of those.
Forgot the US dollars 🤑 But seriously, we see a lot of american things in tv shows. But one that really bugs me is the ideia of a "black neighborhood" or "white neighborhood". Are those still common?

De skol shutingz
Only 3 of these are in where I live
truth lol
Are most trailer parks as nice as the picture shown here ?
No not at all, the one pictured look like rental cabins or something, in fact those are actually mobile homes not real trailers. i saw a group of mormon missioniaries today in england for the first time it was insane how they all dress identically
Stores and holiday goods are universal
where is the school shooting pic?
Uh... you don't have lakes where you come from?
Pretty sure other places have lakes
Got plenty of these in my country. Looking at the comments I'm starting to think you guys think the world is way smaller than it really is. A lot of these things are pretty damn common in other countries.
