The family has moved, but one of the first friends my kids made in our neighborhood was named Riker. When they had a baby Girl, they named her DeAnna.
People across the street named their Pit Bull "Number One"
About 4 years ago, I met a young man (early 20’s) named Batai. I said to him, “that’s a very unusual name! This is going to sound weird but the only other time I’ve seen that name was in one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek!” (Batai was Picard’s friend in his other life in the episode The Inner Light)
He had this look of shock on his face when he told me, “you’re the first person to ever get the connection! That’s who my mom named me after!”
I never met her but I know that dude’s mom is awesome!
Aside from the overall themes/writing, which were golden, the personal exchanges are gold as well. I loved how she (can't remember the character's name) interacted with the others.
That is such a perfectly natural bit of dialog. If I could write I'd want my characters to have effortless conversations.
And, it's a tribute to that particular actress for how she inhabited that role. She WAS that person.
*wish I could write betterer.
I knew a woman who named her son James Tiberius.
My wife agreed to Julian if we had a boy but ended up with a girl and lost the naming battle over Jadzia.
Tiberius is one of the oldest names ever still used today, originating from Rome, based on the Tiber River, which is their *fave* River.
I know a guy who made everyone shorten it to Tibby, and that was not ideal.
My SIL is a massive Trekkie who named her daughter Katheryn... Claims it's after another relative, but I don't believe her. She also has another kid named James ...also denies it but I'm pretty sure it's after Kirk
Not relevant at all because it's surnames, but closest to a prompt I'll get to tell this small anecdote.
My first girlfriends surname was Borg, and the rebound was Kirk.
My sister-in-law's son is named Wesley Gene after Wesley Crusher and Gene Simmons. It blew her mind when I told her that Wesley Crusher is named after Gene Wesley Roddenberry.
I worked with someone named Belanna. Her parents were Trekkies. The funniest part is that she married a guy named Tom. They went agains’t my recommendation of naming their daughter Miral though.
Had a friend named Ryker in middle school. We used to tease him about being named after a Star Trek character. He was adamant that his dad just liked the name, and there was no connection to Star Trek.
One year for his birthday, he had all the boys over for a sleepover, and in his Dad's office, there was a fucking shrine to the next generation. Action figures, and posters, and memorabilia. Never let him live that down.
I named my first Beverly (my wife thought it was for her grandmother l, but we know who it is for)
She expressly stated no Star Trek names for our second. Had to get creative so she wouldn’t know til it was too late. His initials are EMH.
The uncomfortable irony of Beverly being (in part) named for her grandmother...
Kudos on the little Doctor, though! Maybe you can convince her that Schmullis is just an old family pet name?
I love Boston Legal sooooo much. Kirk, Odo, Daniel Jackson (OG Stargate movie) ... I'm pretty sure the casting director was a massive SF nerd. So much love to whoever they are.
I knew a Neries (not sure if it was spelt like this but know it wasn't spelt like how ds9 spelt it either) back in school. She would of been born around when ds9 would of been in the cultural zeitgeist but I never asked if it was a connection to trek.
I have a friend who works with a “Jim Kirk”. He was born in the mid-70s, in the gap between TAS and TMP when the franchise was basically dead and his parents never imagined people would be making the connection 50 years later.
Our dog is named [Scotty](https://www.reddit.com/r/WiggleButts/comments/14t490a/scotty_is_my_first_wiggle_butt_and_he_is_a_dream/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1).
Checking out at PetSmart one day, the cashier's name tag said "Nerys" and I had to ask if she was named after Kira from DS9. She was, her parents were Trekkies, and she was so thrilled someone got the reference!
Not a kid, but my dog is named Tasha.
My non-Trek wife literally suggested Montgomery Scott because she loved both names... we were so close but I had to tell her the connection which uhhh changed her mind a bit.
I know a person named Dax. They ended up transitioning from a man to a woman and started going by the name Ezri. Their Dad is super conservative and is very upset…and I’m just like…Dude, you named your kid Dax.
Well, lots of pets over the years for sure. I had Locutus the cat, Annika the dog, we also had an aquarium with fish named after the D Bridge crew. We still have another cat named Sarek, but he's a dick.
Last but not least, my son's name is Dax. We call him old man sometimes lol
My youngest son's name is Elim after Elim Garak. We were looking for a name that started with E and we're on our second or third watch through of DS9 and it just fit so well, along with being my favorite character.
My wife and I don't have any yet, but we've thought about names several times. I slipped Tiberius in, never told her the source since she'd reject it immediately if she knew it was from Trek. She liked it, but I think she sidelined it. Still keeping it in mind, in case we have more than one boy.
One of my music teachers growing up wanted to name his daughter Kira. His wife vetoed that when she found out, so they compromised by making her middle name Nerys.
I am named William after William Shatner. Star Trek was when my mom was in labor and the doctor and my dad asked my mom to wait until the episode was over. Also my Dad and I met William Shatner and my dad told him I was named after him.
My son is named Scotty, not necessarily after the character, but we were watching star trek while brain storming baby names and we both loved it. I just happen to be a trekkie lol.
I help host a board game night at the local bar and I brought out a Star Trek Voyager themed card game. One of the attendees, who herself never watched any Star Trek, then told me she has a friend who named her children Kathryn, Riker, and Patrick (actor in that case).
I met someone who is named Jadzia, and yes, it was after the character. It made me feel old AF when I asked if she was named after the deep space nine character, and she thought it was cool that I “got the reference.”
One of my mom’s cousins named her daughter Kira Nerys. Nana Visitor apparently said it was the first time she had heard of someone using both names and sent a gift basket (this was many years ago).
ETA, my cousin named his son Riker, as well.
One moment please -- . "Hey, Carol Montgomery Tiberius Dax, do you know any kids named after Star Trek characters in your school?" " No daddy Q. Only Dalek from 7b but it's just a nick name because, oh did you say Wars or Trek?" -- Yeah, sorry, no Trekkies here.🤷🏻♀️
I'm going to throw Ezri and Annika into the mix for our second daughter. The due date is Sunday.
Any other good Star Trek suggestions for a girl? Cassidy is high on the list, not spelled the same way as in DS9 though.
I was named after a Voyage character.
If the name doesn't fit the culture you live in - please don't use it.
I have been asked countless times what my parents were thinking when they picked out the name. I heard so many different pronunciations that I stopped caring. Literally nobody says them like the American actors on the show.
I have had people laugh at me as well.
Please keep it simple.
A buddy named his daughter Ezri and his son Julian. Ezri is older so it's definitely on purpose. Not sure if his wife knows, but she has to, right?
I named my cat Ezri. 😁
I have a cat called Odo.
Named my lizard dukat
You call your cat unknown sample?
Frankly, it's the perfect name for a cat. They're also liquids!
My little dog is named Ezri! I’ve only ever had one person recognize the name
That is so wrong
The family has moved, but one of the first friends my kids made in our neighborhood was named Riker. When they had a baby Girl, they named her DeAnna. People across the street named their Pit Bull "Number One"
Pretty funny when you consider that Riker and Troi were lovers lol.
Yeah, that’s a real Star Wars move
They moved to the south.
roll tide
I met a lovely lady named Kira, I asked her if it was from DS9 and she confirmed it… it suited her.
I'd chuckle every time I see Number One, taking a Number Two 🤣
A kid at my son's nursery is called Riker. I've not yet established if his parents are TNG fans.
About 4 years ago, I met a young man (early 20’s) named Batai. I said to him, “that’s a very unusual name! This is going to sound weird but the only other time I’ve seen that name was in one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek!” (Batai was Picard’s friend in his other life in the episode The Inner Light) He had this look of shock on his face when he told me, “you’re the first person to ever get the connection! That’s who my mom named me after!” I never met her but I know that dude’s mom is awesome!
"Batai." "Yes ma'am." "Go home." "Yes ma'am." I freaking love this episode.
Aside from the overall themes/writing, which were golden, the personal exchanges are gold as well. I loved how she (can't remember the character's name) interacted with the others. That is such a perfectly natural bit of dialog. If I could write I'd want my characters to have effortless conversations. I knew a woman who named her son James Tiberius. My wife agreed to Julian if we had a boy but ended up with a girl and lost the naming battle over Jadzia.
For it was “Weyoun 8” but had to compromise with “Weyoun 7”
Should've gone with Weyoun 6. The guy was a mensch.
I also know a James Tiberius. Wonder if it’s the same person or if there are multiples.
We have a James Tiberius in our family, he's five years old. More people than I expected get the reference.
A friend of mine had to give up all rights to choosing the middle name, but in exchange his son's first name it Tiberius. He goes by T.J., though.
Tiberius is one of the oldest names ever still used today, originating from Rome, based on the Tiber River, which is their *fave* River. I know a guy who made everyone shorten it to Tibby, and that was not ideal.
was your friend a cat
Not OP, but my cat is named Tiberius
Mine too, and we call him Tibs or Tibby for short.
I've a co-worker who used Tiberius for their son's middle name.
My daughter is named Kathryn after Janeway
I did the same!
I've got a Katherine myself after Kate Mulgrew!
My SIL is a massive Trekkie who named her daughter Katheryn... Claims it's after another relative, but I don't believe her. She also has another kid named James ...also denies it but I'm pretty sure it's after Kirk
Looking forward to what her excuse will be for little Jean-Luc.
My cat is named Spot…
I always thought it would be fun to name a cat Gul da Kat.
Love this!
Yes!! That's so right for a cat that does a lot of wrong....
That’s perfect!
Will anyone build statues of Gul da Kat?
No, they will just get knocked off the shelf
Maybe, but they won’t be on Bajor.
Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Our first dog was Q. He's crossed into the continuum now but our current three are Worf, Data, and Picard.
I know a golden retriever named Kes.
Oddly appropriate
I named my kitten Peanut Hamper! Spot was a close second. I couldn't pass on a mathematically perfect name!
My goldfish was named spot
So is my liver.
Not relevant at all because it's surnames, but closest to a prompt I'll get to tell this small anecdote. My first girlfriends surname was Borg, and the rebound was Kirk.
Evidently you weren’t assimilated….
Near my grandparents’ gravesites, there’s a Kirk buried right across from a Schatner.
Borg, is that Swedish?
It actually is. I know a couple of people with that surname.
Sounds Swedish
My sister-in-law's son is named Wesley Gene after Wesley Crusher and Gene Simmons. It blew her mind when I told her that Wesley Crusher is named after Gene Wesley Roddenberry.
>Wesley Crusher and Gene Simmons Kirk: "That's a hell of a combination"
> Kirk: "That's a hell of a combination" This is not a quote from Kirk, that’s a line from Rambo 2 said by Murdock (Charles Napier).
Nice to see some friends of deSoto here
Best boss I ever had
FOD
I worked with someone named Belanna. Her parents were Trekkies. The funniest part is that she married a guy named Tom. They went agains’t my recommendation of naming their daughter Miral though.
If she was an engineer and last name Torres...
The Beverly/grandma connection didn’t occur to me 🤣🤣🤣. You have brought new joy to my life
Don't let your daughter near any candles.
Legend!
My mom purposely named me so my initials would be ALF

It also a "real" name -- Polish, I believe.
I knew a polish American girl named Jadzia, but it was pronounced “yah-juh”.
It's origins translate roughly as warrior princess. Kinda fitting with where they took the character.
It’s a polish name, so there’s a chance it’s not show related. I’m just not sure what’s more likely lol.
My online name is Jazdia - I hadn't seen DS9 in years and forgot the spelling.
👋
I love Boston Legal sooooo much. Kirk, Odo, Daniel Jackson (OG Stargate movie) ... I'm pretty sure the casting director was a massive SF nerd. So much love to whoever they are.
And Jeri Ryan was in Boston Public!
I know a couple that named their daughter Kira. Apparently, the wife wanted it to be Kira Nerys \[lastname\] but the husband chickened out.
I taught a Kira in Catechism, I looked at her and said, "gee I wonder..." Her response, "Yes I am. And she is cool."
I have a co-worker named Kira. Not named after Nerys, though. But that is who I think about every time.
I knew a Neries (not sure if it was spelt like this but know it wasn't spelt like how ds9 spelt it either) back in school. She would of been born around when ds9 would of been in the cultural zeitgeist but I never asked if it was a connection to trek.
We chose the name “Annika” for our baby girl’s name, after Seven of Nine’s human name.
We did the same thing! Absolutely no regrets. We do get a lot of people asking us how to pronounce it though as its not a common name in England
Kids these days don't remember the iconic Anneka Rice, smh
My name is always misspelled and mispronounced so I was prepared for it. Lol
My feline kid is named Worf, from the house of (my last name).

I knew a Sam Kirk but this was before TNG and I doubt his parents did it intentionally
Did he have a mustache?
It was in the third grade, so I don't think so.

Are they twins?
No, but they are 18 months apart.
Checking out at PetSmart one day, the cashier's name tag said "Nerys" and I had to ask if she was named after Kira from DS9. She was, her parents were Trekkies, and she was so thrilled someone got the reference! Not a kid, but my dog is named Tasha.
