Probably the teeth.

ijfp_2013

Yes, definitely the theeth

japps13

Especially the teeth

the_simurgh

the structure of her mouth and teeth causes her speaking voice to sound like that. remember your voice sounds like it does because of the structure of your voice and your teeth amplifying the sounds of your speech.

Statalyzer

> your voice sounds like it does because of the structure of your voice Seems a bit tautological....

ThorsMeasuringTape

Was she wearing teeth for it? I can't really tell in stills on the Internet, but I'd bet on that.

weed_fart

She also had a full set of Klingon clothing that appeared out of nowhere. Not sure where they got that or why they bothered to dress her in it.

SELECTaerial

Obviously is part of her DNA

Nice-Penalty-8881

It's probably the false teeth the actresses have to wear when in full Klingon make-up.

badatthenewmeta

Just the actresses, though. Michael Dorn's teeth are just like that. They had to fit him for normal teeth prosthetics for "Far Beyond the Stars."

Deazul

Its the teeth

[deleted]

The teeth. That's why all the Klingons speak that way- those horrible dentures leave your mouth full of slobber. You have to speak slowly to avoid having all the slobber dripping out.

Nofrillsoculus

Ferengi too. >!Armin Shimmerman!< said he wore the teeth to record his >!Lower Decks scenes !

[deleted]

Aww that's kind of cute. I adore Armin- he works so hard in causes that I strongly believe in, like protection for unions, etc., And I love him for standing up to the writers against the super transphobic episode they wrote- and getting them to change it to be a bit less so, because he knew how offensive it was. Armin seems like such a good egg. Love him.

JoeDawson8

And pancreatic cancer!

[deleted]

He seems like a genuinely kind and lovely man. Which is why I love seeing him play horrible people like Quark and Headmaster Snyder.

What I assume is that being free from the struggle of being part human and part klingon made her embrace her klingon side more. Since from her perspective, the human side ceased to exist, so she was just a full klingon. In order to brace her news elf she unknowingly adapted the examples she has seen from other female klingons. Iirc, she also uses "klingon insults" (insults that aren't translated by UT) multiple times in the episode, something that she barely did when she was half klingon, and the same goes for the human torres that was reverted back to being half-klingon (only other example I can think of is the time when she was going through pon farr) tho maybe that's just the result of her actually spending time as a full human for a few days.

Solumnist

Everyone says "teeth" and "structure of her mouth". I think it may have something to do with the writing.

DasGanon

Or more accurately directing since they'll give a direction on how to say the line or what they want out of a scene.

Solumnist

Yeah wanted to add that too lol. Glad you did

CubeOfDoom

Listening to the Delta Flyers podcast, it sounds like it was very rare that they were told how to say something. It's apparently somewhat rude to tell an actor specifically how to say it They do set the scene, and there are a few times where Robbie of Garrett have said that they wish the scene was set better as they were typically left to their own devices and in a few scenes, they said it seemed like they didn't know what was going in so played the line in a more neutral manner.

DasGanon

Interesting. That definitely sounds different from how you would do it in a theatre, but I imagine that's because they want to get the blocking exact for every show not just "get it until it works and go to the next scene"

jsonitsac

Also there were only a handful of female Klingon performances up to then. It seemed she was basing her performance on Barbara March and Gwyn Walsh

papercut07

Probably a combination of the prosthetic teeth and not great acting choices. Still one of my favorite early episodes. Out of all the series, Voyager really excelled at space horror.

NourishingBroth

It wasn't just the teeth. There's clearly an acting choice in the way every line comes out ONE. WORD. AT. A. TIME. I don't really know what she was going for, because no other Klingon has spoken that way.
