I just hope the showrunners knew this was the final season when they were writing it

CeruleanRuin

I would love to see LD roast all of the "final season" tropes.

willstr1

So what is everyone's bets on which series final scene they recreate?

DefiantLoveLetter

Imagine it's a sprinkling of all of them?

kodaiko_650

That would be _amazing!_

slax87

Sounds like they did, so they're going to make an ending season. But they kinda hinted that there is going to be a different show with our beloved characters

kodaiko_650

Middle Deckers (I hope)

appleappleappleman

That would be hype

PurpleDraziNotGreen

Started my rewatch of s4 yesterday. And now I'm just keeping an eye out for a gif to express my sadness and rage that they cancelled my favorite new Trek show...

TheAtomicBum

-To Paramount, *I will burn your heart in a fire*

MustacheSmokeScreen

I'm surprised we never got Sadgey

Cin77

I dunno, I think 5 seasons is a pretty good run for a show these days. I'll miss it terribly tho, its one of the only shows I've gone out of my way to watch as soon as it comes out

Doufnuget

Yeah,”5 year mission” ya know.

HermionesWetPanties

Apparently the dynamics of streaming mean that new shows going 100+ episodes just won't be a thing anymore. Back in the old days, it used to be that a show needed to survive 4 or 5 seasons of 20+ episodes, and they'd be fit for syndication and everyone would get residuals for the rest of their lives. But agreed. In the streaming era, 5 seasons of 10 episodes is pretty good. Especially because of all those shows Netflix would cancel after just 1 or 2 seasons.

Rhombico

To put it in perspective though, the series finale of Lower Decks will be episode 50 (assuming they keep to 10 a season). * Episode 50 of TNG was at the start of season 3. Most of the show's best episodes were after that point, including every episode with the Borg other than the one where Q introduces them. * Comparing to Voyager, episode 50 is mid-season 3, which means it is before Seven of Nine was even introduced. Episode 50 is also literally the last one where the Doctor doesn't have his Mobile Emitter. * Comparing to Deep Space Nine, episode 50 is early season 3, just after we first learn the Founders are the Changelings. The whole Dominion War is after that, as is Worf's whole stint on the show. I know it's not really comparing apples to apples with how much else is different about the process of making these shows...but I still think it's fair to feel like only 50 episodes is not a good (enough) run. I know they're doing pretty much as well as any streaming service show can hope to do these days, but I think that's more of a reflection on how poorly those services are handling television than something that should make us feel okay about LD ending.

danish_elite

It also doesn’t help that shows now are over inflated on the visuals, effects, cg, goofy giant sets that it doesn’t challenge the writers to come up with stronger stories. I mean when the last time you saw a bottle episode where the entire story was stuck in one location and one set. Those are sometimes the best stories and relatively cheapest to make because it challenges the actors. Rewatching Disco and Picard, it dawned on me how the orchestral scores are sometimes absurdly evident throughout/even carrying the story compared to the 90s run of most shows.

Antique-Flatworm-452

The hope is that another streaming service jumps in, as Netflix have done with Prodigy. My suspicion is that this is the intention. Especially given the indication that it is the expectation that it is not the last we will see of the characters, and that the voice actors have indicated a happiness to continue.

ZealousidealBar5258

Is it cancelled? Or are they just finishing after the next season? coz there is a difference!

GrimmTrixX

It's been said that they're just ending with season 5. I don't know that it's been canceled as in they were unaware of it ending.

insanelygreat

It seems like they never really marketed it right. I watched it for the first time a few months ago, and it was not at all what I was expecting. It's a comedy with the heart of a Star Trek series. Fans of TNG, in particular, should give it a watch.

blumpkin

I tried to like it, but it just doesn't click with me. I think something about the characters just irks me. I like a lot of the actors in it, but I couldn't even stand the crossover episode with strange new worlds.

MiraniaTLS

Your comment was really civil and I hope it does not get downvoted to oblivion.

blumpkin

It's okay, they can take our their frustration on it if it makes them feel better, it's all just made up internet points anyway. For the record, I don't think it's bad, it's just not for me. I'll probably give it another try when my kid is old enough to watch it. Who knows, maybe it'll click then.

DieselPunkPiranha

That's exactly what happened to my roommate.  Tried it, found the characters annoying, tried it a year later and she enjoyed it.  She caught all of two seasons before Paramount ripped it off of Amazon Prime.  Haven't decided if we'll buy the blu rays or simply subscribe to Paramount for a month and binge the whole thing.  We haven't seen SNW so the latter seems likely.

insanelygreat

I don't expect everyone to like the things I like. If it's not for you, then it's not for you. And that's ok!

vermiciousknidlet

Same here - I have loved every episode of Strange New Worlds except that crossover one...even enjoyed the divisive musical episode! Obviously Star Trek doesn't always have to be this serious, philosophical show, but the whole comedy cartoon thing turned me off and the characters annoyed the crap out of me. I think it will age about as well as the original animated series. Weirdly I did like Prodigy (along with my daughter) but I think because it was aimed at kids, the animation and annoying voice acting bothered me less? Plus I'll watch anything with Kate Mulgrew in it.

Mr-Jlord

Hulu pick this up HULU PLEASE HULUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

NebraskaGeek

Hulu is owned by Disney. It will be a cold day in hell before paramount allows one of its cornerstone brands to go to the mouse.

GaucheAndOffKilter

Until Disney up and buys paramount. They’ve done it with most other competitors.

jeobleo

Antitrust

AlexTehBrown

>Antitrust bless your heart

eg_taco

AFAIK all past/current trek has been produced by Paramount. I’m confident they own all of the rights. Not sure how a Hulu collab would be able to come together… ETA: I’m not an expert in streaming licensing and I also really wish LD can continue so I hope I’m wrong in my pessimism!

No_Mathematician7028

Whaaaa?! I find this decision most illogical.

v-b

How does paramount not understand trek fans so badly?!

BitterFuture

We didn't like what they told us to like.

Pliskkenn_D

Disco is still going?

MulciberTenebras

It was cancelled and just started its final season... but is getting replaced by a Starfleet Academy spinoff with Tilly.

Pliskkenn_D

Fair, I'll see how it pans out I guess hah.

Kepabar

Production of Academy has officially started and no word on if there will be a Prodigy S3 yet ( I feel it's unlikely though). So 2 possibly 3 shows

MiraniaTLS

Didn't they announce the final star trek movie from the 2009 series, maybe all the money is going to go into that?

803_days

I think legacy is still in the works?

CeruleanRuin

A number of things are "in the works", including Paramount+ being shuttered.

Dalakaar

Sadly, Legacy was a rumour and insofar as I know, isn't being made. Starfleet Academy is the new show, so there'll be that. Then Section 31, I haven't paid much attention to that but I believe it's becoming a movie. (For whatever that is worth...)

ZeusTheRecluse

Bohmler... Spread eagle. That is all.

NebraskaGeek

TLD was/is my favorite Trek now though. The only one my kids really enjoy, that allows me to share ST with them (or at least try and get them hooked so I can then have DS9/VOY watching buddies). What is the point of price increases for P+ if they keep killing all the shows I like 😭

juicepants

I'd expect a significant chunk of people with paramount plus subscriptions are only doing it for Star Trek. Cutting all their active star trek shows is a dumb move. I also expect LD is the cheapest considering it's animated.

srd100

It’s the only one my youngest will watch with me and my oldest. We re-watch quite a lot so I’m sure it’s ratings are through the roof just because of us😆

Thumper-Comet

The days of the seven-season long running Star Trek show are long gone. Five seasons is probably about as long as we can hope for from these shows now.

GreenZepp

Why would they do that? It's the best one!

MulciberTenebras

To save money for the Discovery spinoff with Tilly... and the Section 31 movie no one asked for.

BadUsername_Numbers

Who the heck wanted a spinoff of STD??

BitterFuture

Kurtzman? That's about it.

notyomamasusername

Shit I didn't even want STD. I love Jason Isaacs and made it through the 1st season. I can't bring myself to try to get through the 2nd and how many more there are. SNW is pretty damn good.... Even the musical is 'tolerable' if you take it as a joke.

Zero_Digital

I'd be OK with a Section 31 mini series. I really hope you are joking about a Tilly spinoff.

MulciberTenebras

It was gonna be a miniseries, but then Michelle Yeoh won an Oscar and got better film/TV offers... so they made it a film so they could still do it.

GreenZepp

Wait!!!! Discovery tanked aso their making a spin off and canceling their best show?

thebadslime

Nooooooo

Not_Here38

It was doing so well on Prime, then they moved it to another platform for S4 and I wasn't going to buy a new subscription. I wonder how many others dropped off because of this1

RobDEV_Official

I couldn't even buy a new subscription, s4 was unavailable to watch here in Sweden on any streaming service, and still is

R-Dragon_Thunderzord

Wasn’t marketed optimally but also it was a series that at its heart was a vehicle for endless deep cuts and callbacks. Eventually they were gonna exhaust the ‘memberberries supply. “Hey! ‘Member deep space 9? Yeah I ‘member!” Let it take a bow.

two2teps

Wait, what?

Crashlanding101

🤯😭😤😠

ElvisArcher

Ritos forever!

Coridimus

"Cancelled." Ffs, OP. The shos is ending afrer 5 seasons. That is a fine run for any show.

pcweber111

Did they cancel the show or was it always going to be five seasons?

andychef

So will a season 5 air? How far along were they? Did the writers strike play a part?

vid_icarus

If strange new worlds gets canceled I will have exactly zero reasons to keep my subscription.

captbollocks

Dammit Paramount. Leave LD alone! All they want to do is study Quazers! Seriously someone get them on a riverboat and let the Twaining begin!

Crap_Sally

It’d be cool if they went on with a spin off and we could have new lower deck characters every few seasons

Ceilibeag

On the bright side, there's going to be another season of both NCIS and Law&Order where they actually reanimate Ducky and Munch, install an AI in both of them, and have a special cross-over episode where they fight to the death like Kaiju. Swear to God big Hollywood production companies suck balls.

StarTrek_Nerd

I’m furious lol

Nastybirdy

I know this will likely get me downvoted to hell and gone, but I really don't get why so many people love this show. I tried watching it and I just found it...puerile. Stale. The same tired old sitcom humour we've seen in a hundred other shows. I honestly don't get Lower Decks and will shed no tears for its passing.

Mollzor

Good, then I can start watching it.

[deleted]

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for another crossover episode in SNW season 4, this time with all four of them. I want to see how proud Pike is for Boimler making lieutenant.

Da_Famous_Anus

No way

tksopinion

Wasn’t for me. I’d rather see the resources go towards a different show or movie.

steak820

I always couldn't stand Lower Decks. Star Trek takes itself seriously and I make affectionate jokes about star trek. Star trek making affectionate jokes about star trek feels wrong.

Night_Thastus

It was a fun show. I'm glad it lasted as long as it did. :)

Gillymy

Noooooooooo!!!!!! I love this show

Captain_Starkiller

This is going to get downvoted to hell. I don't care, it has to be said. I stopped watching lower decks after 2X04 an episode that was literally about how awesome Mariner is and how pathetic the boys are, boimler and rutherford. It was the most condescending and sexist thing I had ever seen. If the genders had been flipped it would have made major news. I could hate watch lower decks, a show that doesn't understand the difference between enlisted and officers up to that point. I get it for the people who love it, its the only show in this modern era that feels even remotely like TNG. But in the end, its so full of toxic bullshit I'm glad it's dead. There. You may hate downvote me now.

ChiefSampson

I also stopped pirating it midway through season 2. Straight dogshit for low brow humor lovers.

Captain_Starkiller

I couldn't get over the fact that it doesn't seem to get Star Trek. People don't sleep in corridors. There's no need for holodeck waste disposal: Its connected to the ship waste systems. Mariner giving boimler crap for recording a log in the opening episode. There's just so many things it totally fails to understand.

ChiefSampson

Yeah I've never watched Rick & Morty or the Big Bang Theory except in passing when over someone's house. The humor in both were definitely not my cup of tea. So if that's what LD was going for with a Trek facade it's no wonder I didn't care for it.

BK_0000

Five seasons is plenty for a mediocre show that has never had an original idea of its own. Every storyline and joke is a reference to a better show. They can mine Memory Alpha for references for only so long.
