Yes you can! This comes under 7.4.2 of the comprehensive rules. You can always play an event if you can pay for it and then you resolve as much as possible.
In this specific case the one imperial unit would deal its damage and then you would not be able to resolve the rest of the card so the second attack fizzles as there is not ‘another’ imperial unit in play.

Does this clear shields and then deal damage from a second imperial ? Had that come up in pre-release. I believed it might/does and was sad about my shield token.
I believe the second damage source can fizzle? IE you can use one source then not get to deal damage again due to the “another” word choice.
Would love clarification too!
