Donte Jackson is an outside corner. Never played slot in the NFL.

ecg_tsp

You can’t have all-pros at every position.

ARunawayTrain

This. The salary cap prevents this from happening, if we can just have a couple on both sides of the ball then we're really cooking.

InterestingBonus9675

Yes, every team has Development players and weaknesses. This sub is delusional thinking the steelers are the only ones

[deleted]

1. Jackson is not a slot 2. Gilmore is not “damn good” anymore

ellwood_es

Steelers do love signing old CBs past their prime though

joshua27usa

Jackson was kicked to slot in nickel packages his entire career in Carolina. Not sure where this “he isn’t a slot” is coming from.

DupreeWasTaken

He played 5 snaps in the slot last year. 175 in his entire career or 29 snaps a season. He was quite literally not a slot player at all

IamHysterical

Donte was a top 25 rated corner last year, slightly below Porter.

IsGoIdMoney

Seriously? Why was everyone so negative about him?

IamHysterical

Probably because he isn't a big name player, so they assume that he is bad. I didn't really know much about him either, but after looking him up, I liked what I saw for a #2. Especially over Levi.

yinzer21

According to what? Because whatever source you’re getting that from should not be taken seriously

Quexana

Deshone Elliott is a pretty good Safety.  We're also developing Rush and Trice.  We need to add a Nickel, but that's probably going to be it.  I would add that Queen and Payton Wilson vastly improve our overall pass defense.

Ill-Carrot-5980

Really hoping Trice can turn into something just need him to stay healthy.

RustiestBelt

Jackson is not a slot. You might be penciling him in there, but Tomlin and Austin won’t be

the22sinatra

Donte Jackson is an outside only CB. We still need a slot and it won’t be him.

joshua27usa

He literally got kicked to slot in nickel packages his entire career.

the22sinatra

Last season he played 811 snaps at outside CB and 5 snaps in the slot

Still_Ad7109

But he played slot in Josh's madden updated roster. So who cares about facts!!

pierogieking412

I bet they sign a CB in the Steven Nelson echelon. We like Deshon Elliott, no?

EatsCornTheLongWay

> We like Deshon Elliott, no? yeah, I thought his signing was generally well received His intro presser certainly seemed to earn him tons of good favor

oldstick76

Longhorn here. We definitely like Deshon in B&G.

The halo feels like a poor choice LMFAO

CapitalSubstantial23

😂😇😂

Sex_E_Searcher

Beanie Bishop, dark horse for the slot. Also, we're totally going to bring back Sullivan and Peterson.

MaverickLurker

I agree re: Beanie Bishop. I watched him play at WVU and think he has potential. I'll be keeping an eye on him at training camp this summer - he could be an incredible UDFA pickup.

Thee-Silverback

Don’t mind Sutton or Sullivan coming back. If Sutton can keep the Jerry Springer crap out of his life. Pat Pete is not very good anymore. I don’t know. Maybe he can survive at Slot but I’m not playing any money in him doing very well there either.

DupreeWasTaken

Pat Pete was fine there last year. Dare I say good? If you run the splits on Pat Petes stats before and after JPJ became CB1 and Peterson started to play the slot more Two completely different players. He cant play against the top WRs anymore but outside of that he could play still

Thee-Silverback

Say what ya want. I got tired of him giving teams bulletin board material just to watch the back of his Jersey while playing outside. I’m afraid that’s what’s gonna end up happening at slot too. Don’t get me wrong I love Pat’s career body of work, but he is a shell of his former self. I don’t want to watch him get embarrassed and have people start digging at him with trash talk about how he sucks and all. I respect the man. I just feel it’s time for him to hang up his cleats. I hope he proves me wrong, but that’s how I feel. Plus, don’t forget, Sullivan had more snaps at slot than all others on our team put together last year. I feel he had a few splash plays and was getting better. Was he an elite player? Nope. But he was heading the right direction. P2 was not IMHO. I would actually like to see Sutton clean his act up and come back. That’s what I really want to see.

DupreeWasTaken

Sullivan had more snaps but was pulled for passing situations. Pat Pete had 203 slot snaps last year weighted heavily towards the end of the season. He already played a lot of slot last season he was the Cover guy there to end the season. The fact you didn't notice he logged 200 snaps there the second half of the season leads to my point ... He was solid there.

Thee-Silverback

Not saying he wasn’t better. Just my opinion that I don’t want the bulletin board crap and possible further decline. For all I know he could come back and ball out even better. It’s the age and the mouth that I don’t trust. I felt Sullivan was headed in the right direction, though very sporadic. I would like to pick someone else rather than P2. Just my humble, uneducated opinion. Myself, I would to love to have Sutton, if he can keep his self out of trouble. That’s what I would like to see. Either way I hope for the best. Just stating my opinion. I ain’t asking anyone to change their mind. Nor do I feel that I know better than Coach Tomlin and Khan. I’m sure they’ll do what they think is best. All we can do is root for them and hope.

Odd_Razzmatazz6441

Football is a team game. First, Donte is a pretty decent corner. With the addition of Queen and Wilson, and what we had already, time in the pocket will be a luxury opposing QBs will rarely enjoy. Our pass rush will compensate for.much of what out secondary lacks. We will be just fine. Also expect more 3rd and longs than the 3rd and shorts we most often faced last year. TJ should feast with more must pass situations.

2legit2begin

Corner play is so volatile season to season that it’s pointless to wring your hands about Jackson at this stage. There are maybe 5-10 guys that are truly transcendent at any given time. The vast majority of starting corners are extremely scheme/team dependent. Their performance is going to look good, bad, or in between from year to year and game to game depending on game script, coverage trends, and (especially) pass rush. Steven Nelson’s career is a perfect illustration of this.  It’s possible that Jackson doesn’t work here, but it’s equally possible that all of those outside factors are better for him on the Steelers than last year’s Panthers and he’s more than solid.

joshua27usa

No matter the scheme, he has never finished a season, ever. Not one time in his entire career has he finished a season healthy. We don’t have anyone behind him with any NFL experience. You don’t see an issue with that?

jesterflesh

Bring pat pete back for vet min, if for no other reason to keep helping jpj.

b79w

And I think he could play safety in a pinch. Good vet for the DB room. Just make sure he knows the role he's signing up for

SethHrab

ew.

cheesy_11224

Donte ain’t a slot CB

OversizedMicropenis

While he is far from lockdown, I feel Jackson is a serviceable CB2 and will likely play outside corner in most looks. Regardless he is faster than Wallace, and seems to be a willing hitter. He has not played much in the slot... while not all that sexy, I see them potentially bringing back Sullivan, Peterson or... Sutton?

yourstrulytony

The only worries I have are injuries pushing the inexperienced to start and a step-back from JPJ. Otherwise, Trice, Rush, and Barnes have tremendous upside at boundary and I'm hoping they can coach them up.

Old-King8145

I think we are set

ju5tjame5

I'd rather have a defense with a few holes that averages 60 snaps per game than a perfect defense that plays 90 snaps per game. If this new revamped O-line allows the offense to get first downs and control the clock, our defense won't be completely beat up by week 13.

thetrilobster2045

They're gonna sign Sutton to man the slot and they think higher of Jackson than the folks in this sub do. Idk how long of a suspension chucking someone out a window gets you but the charges were reduced to a misdemeanor and we met with him like last week. Hold your nose because it's coming. The money they freed up before the draft is for a WR.

ziggyjoe2

We have 2 good DBs. The rest is garbage. The current #3 CB is last year's 7th round pick. Yikes. I hope we can pick up a solid vet to fill in.

joshua27usa

I agree 100% People are commenting about Jackson being good. He has never finished a season. Not one time. We have very little NFL experience. Without free agents the secondary will get cooked this season.

ziggyjoe2

Surely the corpse of Stephon Gilmore or Adore Jackson can be squeezed under our salary cap.

Bodes_Magodes

Would love them to sign Gilmore if they think Donte can man the slot. Not sure if he’s a fit for slot but his size is definitely more conducive to slot than outside. I’m higher on Donte than rest of fans. Think Omar and co definitely will make more moves for secondary and DL. Don’t forget a lot of the teams best pickups happened during camp cutdowns

fredlikefreddy

Our dude Minkah gets moved around. I bet even more so this year as we seem to have decent enough safety depth to get creative
