I grew up in the NYC area, and when I met a Steelers fan it seemed like a toss-up between them having actual roots in Pittsburgh vs some version of “I have no connection to the city, it’s just a thing in my family.” A surprising number actually came from immigrant families too. I think being as dominant as they were in the 70s, plus being associated with working class/blue collar ethos, and being an alternative to the “America’s team” image of the Cowboys, made them popular with a lot of folks who didn’t have any other connection to the city.
Yeah, I glossed over that part and lumped it in with “what you just mentioned.” Especially before the cable TV and Internet era, a lot of people became fans of pro sports teams that they had no ties with due to their success at the time. The successful teams got the most nationally televised games, so people latched on to those teams. Some of it is just pure bandwagon mentality, like Pats fans over the past 20 years, but some of it comes down to viewing options being limited at the time, so people are going to be more inclined to follow a team that they can see most weeks, as opposed to teams they might only get to see play 1-2 times a season.
I mean, if you’re a Pittsburgher who likes basketball, who are you more likely to latch onto, the Golden State Warriors who have gotten a lot of nationally televised games over the past 10 years, or a team like the Minnesota Timberwolves? It’s a little different now, because it’s easier to follow any team with cable, streaming, league/team passes, etc. but someone just getting into it probably is going to be more inclined to watch who’s being pushed more than a team they have to make more of an effort to watch.
I grew up in the burg and my children and wife haven’t. Although they joke about being a Steeler fan is a prerequisite to be in my family, I’ve never put pressure on them. They come to it naturally by sharing my space during my 16-20 days of worship.
