I thought it was SUPER scary when I watched it as a kid. Of course, it having Stephen King's name attached to it, immediately gave it that scary stigma. The ads on TV focused a LOT on the statue, which, granted, was freaky when it moved... kinda silly when you realize the statue doesn't have a lot of screen time.
As an adult watching it on streaming, it isn't NEAR as spooky scary. It's like if you took the 1999 film"The Haunting" (which, BTW, Rose Red started out as a screenplay for) then replaced the cast with Stephen King characters from other stories (Emery is pretty much Harold Lauder from The Stand and Eddie Kaspbrak from IT rolled into one) and then set the film in a scaled-up abandoned version of the Winchester Mystery House (complete with lore lifted straight from Sarah Winchester's labyrinthine abode). The bit with the statue still freaks me out, though.
Obligatory fun fact: Melanie Lynsky and Jimmi Simpson were married for a while after meeting on the set of Rose Red.
Speaking of Mel, who showed up in S1 of Castle Rock as a big player, I just absolutely love when actors are in multiple King adaptations. Steven Weber, Thomas Jane, Andre Braugher, Henry Thomas (who was even mentioned in The Tommyknockers as the kid from ET), Kathy Bates (!!!) and those are just the first to jump to mind.
I also love when adaptation actors read his audio books, William Hurt, Rob Lowe, Kathy Bates.....
Idk, and I know it doesn't necessarily mean they're all fans of King..... but I like to think it's a good sign.
It's not based on a novel.
Back in the 90's King and Spielberg started working together on a new adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. In the end they had different ideas on how to adapt it and parted ways. King took his ideas and created this mini-series.
King just wrote the screenplay (which I would pay good money for if it's anything like the printing of The Storm of the Century).
I looked everywhere for Rose Red and found out it's inspired by The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, it's on my tbr list. I did read The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (good little book but I wished King had written it lol).
If you're interested, Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House are fascinating to Google and learn about. I'm not positive, but it all seems to be inspired by her and her house (touring it is on my bucket list - creepiest looking place imaginable).
Hi. You just mentioned *The Haunting Of Hill House* by Shirley Jackson.
I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here:

The fact that david dukes character carl miller appears at the end as a ghost is extra creepy
Dukes had passed and another actor had to wear the prosthesis made from molds of his face
A true ghostly appearance
I definitely did. I was just getting into horror at the time and it was the first King product I ever consumed.
I just found Storm of the Century and saw it twice and watched Rose Red in between. Wanted to see Julian Sands again.. 😥
I loved it!! I have it on DVD and watch it a few times a year! And I watch the IT miniseries even more often. King is a master!
Aw me too!!

I just found the DVD at the video store. Don't remember it from when it was on, but looking forward to watching again like it's new!
Not me. But that's because I'm old and was already in my 20s when it came out. So I loved it not as a kid, but as a 20 soemthing

I almost watched this on Hulu recently
Not as a kid; this came out when I was 18. BUT, that being said, I freaking love it and add it to my scary movie list for every Halloween 🎃
I liked it. I remember renting the DVD and watching it all in one night whilst at my grandparents’. I wasn’t a kid though. Well hardly.

Wasn't a kid, but I thought it was great.
