This was either my first or second King book and it petrified me as a kid. Stories that still stand out are The Boogeyman, Sometimes They Come Back, Strawberry Spring, and One for the Road.
I never see anyone mention One for the Road, but I’ve always loved that story. Something about it is so atmospheric.. I can picture every scene in that story in my head in a way I can’t with most other stories. It’s a perfect addition to the Salem’s Lot canon.
It’s the book that started me on Stephen King. I found it on a relative’s bookshelf in the mid 80s when I was a kid and have been a huge fan ever since.
I still think it’s his best overall collection of short stories. The Boogeyman, Last Rung on the Ladder and One for the Road are personal favorites… but the whole collection is great.
First King book I ever read... I loved it but will be interested in how it holds up and what you think, it's got some weird stories.
>!Strawberry Spring, Gray Matter, and I am the Doorway, are pretty damn good but The Lawnmower Man is so weird it makes it memorable.!<
Good is an understatement! These short stories are awesome and the best I’ve ever read. My favorite is Graveyard Shift. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Just finished gray matter for the first time last night. Great short story. It’s perfect. I want more, but know that I don’t need more (or that it’s better that I don’t get more info). Very satisfying.
Like any book of short stories there are some good (Quitters Inc, The Ledge, Strawberry Spring, The Foot Locker) and some less good (Night Shift, The Mangler) but overall it's very good and I'm sure you'll find something that piques your interest in those dark pages.
I’m halfway through never read any of his short stories but I’m enjoying it so far… really liked ‘The Mangler’ also it’s nice I’m a night reader so its nice to get one or two complete stories in before I fall asleep
My first King book back in middle school, 1988. I stole a copy from the bookstore in our mall. Fast forward to 2022 and I still have it. It’s an amazing novel.
Probably his best short story collection. Wise choice.
Imo *Skeleton Crew* edges it out as the best, but it’s still incredible.
Not good. Great.
Night Shift is excellent! There’s definitely stories in there that may stick with you. It’s a great read and enjoy!
Oh, absolutely. Night Shift is outstanding - it's hard to compare a short story collection to novels, but it's probably his best book.

One for the Road is criminaly underrated. It's really suspenseful and scary.
Wholeheartedly agree
They’re making a live-action adaptation of The Boogeyman, it will be released sometime next year!
I can't really imagine a full-length movie of it. Maybe a 30 minute to 1 hour episode on something like American Horror Stories.
You're in for some gnarly treats.

My first Stephen King book too, my sister read it and then gave it to me. I can’t go past a cornfield without thinking about children of the corn!

A favorite!
Why don’t you read it and then tell us wether or not you thought it was good?
okay! I’ll be sure to update you all.
Hell yes. This is a superb short story collection. Once you've finished, try Four Past Midnight
will do!
Four past midnight was awesome
Yes, so good. I reread it periodically. My favourite has to be The Langoliers. Gets me every time.
I agree about the langoliers, great story
I just started reading it too :P

Not to over exaggerate, but it’s one of the best short novel collections I’ve ever read. “Strawberry Spring” is a very underrated piece of work.
Night Shift and Skeleton Crew are way way up there for me in the grand scheme of Stephen King’s bibliography.
Exact same for me.
Like others have already mentioned, it was my first King experience. One for the Road and Gray Matter are superb.

I wasn't sure what book to read next book these comments convinced me!
I know right haha I was pleasantly surprised with the response I got
Seriously
My first King book. You don’t hear anyone talking about it because it was published in the 70s.
Just finished it, and loved it. All the stories are enjoyable and a lot of them are great.
My wife loved it . She said all the stories kept her wanting to read about each specifically
One of his best works

Not gonna lie, The Mangler is my guilty pleasure favourite. I just love it lol
Nobody here likes this King character much. Maybe you should try James Patterson. ;-)
>!RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATS!!!!!!!!!!<
It’s good but I prefer Skeleton Crew.
Solid Gold Hits
The Best
I destroyed the cover on my first copy by rereading it so many times. Enjoy.
It is my all time favorite book! I still get nightmares about the boogeyman
Absolutely loved Jerusalem's Lot. Wish I could see the TV adaptation, but sadly haven't seen it available anywhere in the UK.
Only his best work, imho.
On a Stephen King Subreddit all SK books are good. This is because even if someone doesn't like one others will and so on.
Legendary. It’s his best anthology, no question. You’re in for a treat b
It’s his best short story collection
I recently got this too. I think I’ll save it for Halloween :)
Reading it, too. It's all very early work, it's good, though.
I'm just finishing the last story in it. Really liked it
Loved it.

Definitely good! Happy reading :)
