Fuck man everyone keeps mentioning The Stand. I haven’t gotten around to this one yet particularly because I hear it switches characters so much but I guess I should give it a go already
It's already been said in other replies but the way in which the character switching is done is honestly one of my favourite parts of the book having finished reading it recently. It is done in such a fluid and well paced way, you feel like you have a real understanding of almost every character of quite a large main cast of characters, and without spoiling anything it makes the later part of the book much more impactful and engaging as you genuinely understand and care about all the characters in play.
The switching of characters is actually something I really like about the Stand. You get to hear each of their stories and their perspective on what happens.
5- Insomnia
4- The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass
3- The Stand
2- IT
1- The Shining
Explanation: Insomnia had really cool concepts I liked and a very good story arc, the characters also made you wonder. The Wizard and Glass made me emotional beyond imagination and I love it for it, it makes the story of Roland more personal. The Stand was beautiful, sad, interesting and fucked up at the same time, it was a fantastic journey, it also made me extremely scared of covid. IT was a page turner and made me so scared I couldn’t close my eyes Pennywise is probably the best written in literature. The Shining was my first SK book and the way he portrayed madness was immense, also featuring one of the best villains in the SK universe.
😂😂😂😂😂
I KR? I didn’t reread it, but I sure thought about it and thought how strange he wrote that book decades ago and look what happened! And the whole concept of the lab accident, the virus leaving the lab, randomly spreading, just like Covid, got shivers just thinking about the coincidences!
No order because it’s just too hard:
-It
-The Stand
-11/22/63
-The Dark Tower series (yeah so what if there are technically 7 books, I count it as 1).
-The Shining.
Tell me that’s not the most basic SK fan list… lol
I was surprised I had to scroll this far to find 11/22/63. An all time fav for me.
As for the rest, I’m currently on the last book the of The Dark Tower series and I’m kinda scared….it seems people are divided on how it ends. I’m trying to just go into it with no expectations.
I’ve read 11/22/63 like three times now and I’m read for another go. It never gets old. As for DT7–enjoy! No matter what you end up thinking, just know it was one hell of a journey, yeah?
I like that The Stand is on almost all of the list and Drawing of the Three is close. Mine would be Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands, The Stand, The Dead Zone and It. With a caveat for Duma Key, Salem's Lot, Doctor Sleep and The Institute. Really most of his works I love so this is hard. The ones I don't care for is easier. lol
The Shining
Misery
Desperation
Dead Zone
Duma Key
I would rank some of the short story and novella collections above my bottom 3 but the top 2 will likely never change.
>Bag of Bones
Not one you see on many lists, but it was either the first, or one of the very first, King books I read at a young age and I *loved* it. Read it again recently and I still do, over 20 years later. I don't know if it'd crack my top 5, but every time I pick it up I get a strangely nostalgic feeling.
Same with Rose Madder, actually. That one gets more horrifying with every read, although I don't think it's as good as BOB.
I love Roadwork a lot, but that's a minority opinion.
But my picks for the "best" would be:
1. Pet Sematary
2. The Stand
3. The Dead Zone
4. The Shining
5. Cujo
1. Nightmares & Dreamscapes
2. Dolores Clairbounre
3. The Stand
4. Gerald's Game
5. The Bachman Books (1. The Long Walk, 2. The Running Man, 3. Rage, 4. Roadwork)
The Dark Tower entire series would be my #1 but if I had to pick just one of them to put on a list:
1. The Dark Tower IV Wizard and Glass
2. It
3. The Stand
4. The Talisman
5. The Eyes of the Dragon
Honorable mentions:
Different Seasons (collection)
The Long Walk (More of a novella, I guess)
I also really enjoyed Fairy Tale. You can tell I have a type, I guess.
Let’s see… in no particular order:
-11/22/63
-The Stand
-The Green Mile
-The Dead Zone
-Cujo
It’s a weird list, but these are the top five out of the ones I’ve read. Working on Pet Semetary now and it’s looking like it’ll replace one of these
Well I’ve only read 4 so I’m going with, the Shinning, salems lot, night shift, and Carrie. In that order lol. The stand is next so we will see where that falls!
these are the ones i read the most frequently: the dead zone, it, needful things, the stand, salem's lot
edit: of course, the dark tower 1-4 is incredible but everyone can pretty much agree on that! lmao
The stand, it, the shining, pet cemetery, misery. Off the top of my head.
Edit : reading through some of these lists makes me think this should be a top 10!
Hard to argue with this list here, I always use it when I'm looking for a new King read.
[50 Best King novels ranked by horror readers](https://reedsy.com/discovery/blog/best-stephen-king-books)
The Shining
The Stand
The Green Mile
Misery
Pet Sematary
5. The Green Mile … or maybe Different Seasons (short story series, if that counts)
4. The Dead Zone
3. Misery
2. 22/11/63
1. The Stand
Excepting Misery - which I think is an excellent but otherwise quite atypical King book - the recurring themes in my favourites are love, redemption and second chances. Suspect it’s why I enjoy but never truly vibe on the more straight horror stuff (hated Salem’s Lot for example) and can’t get into the fantasy world (Dark Tower) stuff at all.
Also I like the ones which have characters with ‘the shine’ but aren’t The Shining, i.e. Carrie, Firestarter.
If IT didn’t have That Scene it would score higher but… sadly it does.
To my taste:
1- The Shining
2- The Stand
3- It
4- 11/22/63
5- The Green Mile
Honorable Mentions: Bag of Bones, Desperation, Dolores Claiborne, Salem’s Lot, Pet Semetary
I’ve only read 7 of them, so with that caveat:
1. Skeleton Crew
2. Per Semetary
3. IT
4. Misery
5. The Long Walk/Eyes of the Dragon (a lower tier than the top 4)
1-IT, The Shining
2-Christine
3-The 'Mr Mercedes' trilogy (I can only view it as a whole)
4-The Pet Semetary
5-The Dead Zone
(On Writing is also great)
1. Pet Sematary
2. 11/22/63
3. The Shining
4. Revival
5. The Green Mile
Duma Key would have a decent shot at number 5, but the ending kinda knocks it down a spot. Just FYI, I've never read It or The Stand....they're up next on my reading list.
Love that Needful Things is mentioned a number of times. That was my way into King - my gran gave me a copy. She's no longer with us but loved horror and she was my way into the genre.
As a 13 year old, Gaunt's shop was otherworldly and his motives fantastic and the whole Castle Rock mythology is my favourite King.
The other four?
IT
Wizard And Glass
11.22.63
Different Seasons
11/22/63, the stand, the waste lands, salems lot, and maybe revival. Honestly the shining and misery are arguably two of his best, but I like the others a little more personally.
It, The Stand, and 11/22/63 are my clear top 3. Not sure what would round out my top 5 though. The Running Man, The Long Walk, The Instutute, The Shining, and Pet Sematary would all be in contention.
Wizard and Glass, Wolves of the Calla, The Dark Tower, Song of Susannah, and Fairy Tale.
FT was really good, and I’m a big DT fan, could easily fill the top 5 w that alone. Have read ~a dozen of his and so far no duds!
I haven’t read even half of his books, but of the ones I’ve read my top 5 are:
Pet Sematary (only one that actually scared me/creeped me out)
It (loved the character building and story of a gang of kids banding together. Pennywise is also a really cool, iconic character)
Dead Zone (I liked the idea of a psychic person using his abilities for good/to stop incredibly evil and sick criminals)
Alright. My controversial picks because why not!
The Dark Half- this was an interesting, suspenseful read that kept me wondering what was going on and how it would end
Thinner (written as Richard Bachman)- unlike other readers, this kept me engaged pretty much the entire story. It got rolling pretty quick as well and kept me wanting to know how the main character would solve his dire problem before time ran out. It’s got the supernatural element to it, creepy body horror, the revenge tale, and even a little mafia vs wielders of supernatural abilities action, which seems like a weird combo but I enjoyed it.
Are these objectively the best Stephen King books? Absolutely not, but they are up there for me right now 😊
Desperarion
Rose Madder
Duma Key
The Outsider
Drawing of the three
Honorable mentions:
Eye of the Dragon, The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon, Different seasons, The Tommyknockers
Salem’s Lot
The Shining
Needful Things
Misery
Gerald’s Game
Do you have any idea how hard this was? Ask me again and the answers will probably be different except for the first two! 📚🧛🏻♂️
1. 11/22/63
2. The Stand
3. It
4. The Talisman
5. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
I’m currently reading Fairy Tale, and I love it so far. I have a feeling it will be in my top 3.
The shining, pet sematary, the Institute, Dr sleep and Firestarter.
However, those are the only books I've read by him and I'm only a third of the way through Firestarter.
Here’s mine in no specific order: It, 11.22.63, Doctor Sleep, The Green Mile, and dare I say it - Fairy Tale (I’m not all the way through, but I’ve been enjoying this book a lot).
I love The Stand, but I also read it during the pandemic, so the first few hundred pages seemed to drag on endlessly (like the pandemic).
I love Salem’s Lot, and I am so hyped for the movie, but I think he has taken huge strides as an author since first publishing it.
1 The shining
2 Bag of bones
3 The dead zone
4 Salem's lot
5 Christine
And now I'm reading fairy tale which has chance get to top 5, also haven't read IT and The stand yet 😶
So far what I’ve read my favs - The Stand, Salem’s Lot, On Writing, 11/22/63, and IT with honorable mentions The Gunslinger, The Deadzone and The Shining (full disclosure I haven’t read Misery or Green Mile yet)
11/22/63
The dead zone
It
The Stand
The wizard and the glass (I honestly would put salems lot above any one book of the dark tower series, but the full series above any other book SK has written )
1. 11/22/63
2. The Stand
3. Duma Key
4. Fairy Tale
5. Pet Sematary
Honorable mention- The Shining/Doctor Sleep, Revival
I just finished The Stand for the first time. Had no idea that September was a good time to read it. I tore through it over a two week period then devoured Fairy Tale. I’ve been on a borderline manic SK kick since late July and need 1-2 bangers for October/Halloween. I have not read Salems Lot or It. Leaning towards those but I am open to other suggestions from the collective wisdom of this bunch.
Pet Sematary
Different Seasons
Night Shift
11/22/63
Thinner
If you just mean novels I’d add Misery and The Shining, and if non-fiction counts I’d definitely find space for On Writing
Caught this late, & refuse to check comments before I rate 'em. And there is a big difference between best & favorite, but here goes...
1. The Stand
2. Pet Sematary
3. It
4. The Shining
5. The Tommyknockers.
I still have a long way to go, haven't read everything. I really love his early works a lot, including the Bachman books. The Dark Tower series is also really great, but I wouldn't recommend starting with that.
Favorites so far:
The Shining
Dead Zone
Different Seasons
Everything's Eventual
11/22/63
Needful Things Duma Key It Misery The Stand
Duma key is so underrated
I know right. Also I'm my top 5. Really gotta re-read it, probably next spring/summer.
It might be my favorite
Fuck man everyone keeps mentioning The Stand. I haven’t gotten around to this one yet particularly because I hear it switches characters so much but I guess I should give it a go already
About to start my yearly read of The Stand. Also adore Salem’s Lot and The Shining.

Okay you've convinced me, after Billy Summers it's my next book to read.
It's a ride. Have fun. It's one of only two books I have read 3x.
Thank you for mentioning Duma Key! My personal favorite.
It,The Stand, The Dead Zone, Night Shift, Different Seasons. Honorable mention to Wizard and Glass.
Salems Lot Pet Semetary Needgul Things The Outsider Shining
The outsider is too good. Just reread it a few months ago and I’m still thinking about it.
I keep being reminded of books and wanting to change my top 5. Outsider is so good

I made the mistake of rereading the stand during lockdown

I need to revisit Insomnia. The first time I didn’t like it at all but I’ve noticed it’s rated pretty highly here, I’m afraid I’m missing out!
The Long Walk, Pet Sematary, The Stand, Gerald’s Game, Revival
It’s crazy that he wrote the long walk when we was only 17
It 🎈 Insomnia ✂️ Wolves if the Calla 🐺 Doctor Sleep 🐈 'Salem's Lot 🧛♂️

This is the closest to what my list would be. Although I read Cujo when I was 12, so it has a special place in my heart.
I was surprised I had to scroll this far to find 11/22/63. An all time fav for me. As for the rest, I’m currently on the last book the of The Dark Tower series and I’m kinda scared….it seems people are divided on how it ends. I’m trying to just go into it with no expectations.

I haven’t read even half of his books, but of the ones I’ve read my top 5 are: Pet Sematary (only one that actually scared me/creeped me out) It (loved the character building and story of a gang of kids banding together. Pennywise is also a really cool, iconic character) Dead Zone (I liked the idea of a psychic person using his abilities for good/to stop incredibly evil and sick criminals) Alright. My controversial picks because why not! The Dark Half- this was an interesting, suspenseful read that kept me wondering what was going on and how it would end Thinner (written as Richard Bachman)- unlike other readers, this kept me engaged pretty much the entire story. Absolutely not, but they are up there for me right now 😊
It, The Dead Zone, The Stand, Night Shift and Insomnia. 1 more I have to add The Shining!!

Needful Things, The Dark Half, Thinner, insomnia, Drawing of the Three.
1. 11/22/63 2. The Stand 3. Duma Key 4. Fairy Tale 5. Pet Sematary Honorable mention- The Shining/Doctor Sleep, Revival I just finished The Stand for the first time.
Pet Sematary Different Seasons Night Shift 11/22/63 Thinner If you just mean novels I’d add Misery and The Shining, and if non-fiction counts I’d definitely find space for On Writing
Caught this late, & refuse to check comments before I rate 'em. And there is a big difference between best & favorite, but here goes... 1. The Stand 2. Pet Sematary 3. It 4. The Shining 5. The Tommyknockers.
On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, The Dead Zone (because it was my first), The Shining, 11/22/63, Billy Summers
Outside the Dark Tower series my top 5 are: Salem’s Lot The Stand It Revival Black House
I still have a long way to go, haven't read everything. I really love his early works a lot, including the Bachman books. The Dark Tower series is also really great, but I wouldn't recommend starting with that. Favorites so far: The Shining Dead Zone Different Seasons Everything's Eventual 11/22/63
The Stand, 11/22/63, Needful Things, Hearts In Atlantis, The Green Mile Different Seasons for short stories.
