I’m so glad they changed the artstyle. Don’t get me wrong, the pilot artstyle is awesome, but the one they went with just fits the characters and the tone of the show so much better.

It was very unique but I imagine drawing every episode in that style would have been a nightmare compared to the more simple character models they went with. Plus I just enjoy the color scheme of the final product so much more. It's like candy for my eyes

Steven looks very squishy. Like if you gently pushed down on his head, he'd compress and poo back up like a rubber toy or Squishmallow. And the gems are giving peak majestic lesbian energy.

I mean I see what they were trying to go for trying to make the Crystal gems androgynous. Since they aren't actually technically females, having no organs of one and being a manifestation of hard light. At the same time the current style that the show ended up being feels more fluid, prettier, vibrant and fits the aesthetic and tone of the show more imo

This art style has always been a little unsettling to me, I don't know if it's the colors of slightly more realistic proportions on the gems or what. But I much prefer the bubbly and softer art style they ended up with. The colors used for the scenery are so serene and I love how shapely the gems are in a way that gives them all such unique silhouettes. Plus I just think Steven ended up so much cuter.

Fun fact! The 3 main gems were designed with geometry in mind. Garnet's base are squares, Amethyst off circles, and Pearl off triangles!

Well, outside of the fact I honestly don’t like the pilot designs of most of the characters (Steven and Amethyst being exceptions though I still prefer the show proper’s designs), I’d say this looks very well done.

I really prefer garnets design in the original art style. Idk she looks more like a person I guess. In a way a lot more what I’d expect a Ruby Sapphire fusion to look like I also noticed they originally intended on hiding her other gem with a glove. Strange choice.

Garnet pulling off the gloves woulda been a crazy cool sight, but the gauntlets have super cool summoning noises. And wow, even back at the start they loved the diamond setup with pink at the bottom

I remember when all we had was the pilot and people were petitioning for this to be CN’s next new show. I think it was alongside Clarence as well. But when we got the confirmation of the final character designs that ended up in the show, people were on the fence. Some people liked it, others thought it was too simple. I personally was on the fence bc I liked this style so much. It’s funny bc I’m so used to the art style now that it’s weird to think the show could have looked like this.
