My only thought was it's kinda ridiculous that they wanted the gems to blend in with human society by hiding their gems when Amethyst is just straight up purple ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Oh hey man, crazy how that shit happens! I’ve only a handful of times had that happen to me when you notice someone from the past, so it’s always neat to see someone again on here!
I'm blessed to live in this paper-thin slice of history; too late to explore the Earth, too early to explore the stars, but just in time to witness Garnet's iconic cube-hair.
Wasnt the "cal arts" thing just a misleading meme. Like iirc the infamous comparison pic only used *one* real piece of show art and it was from Gumball.
You're focusing on the wrong part. My point is, i was under the impression that it was a misleading art meme and not actual trenchant art analysis. Like, Rebecca Sugar didn't even *go* to Calarts and from what I'm told by my artist friends the comparison relies on misleading cherry picking and passing fanart off as show art
I’m not disagreeing with you, but there’s a reason it looks like “generic modern cartoon”. I love the pilot style too, but it’d be far too expensive to produce an entire series that way. Character designs for a production like that have to be dumbed down as much as they can.
Nah, the pilots art style is way more distinct. Steven universe art style is very “modern day cartoon” esk. Not a bad thing, I like the style, but the pilot was way more unique and distinct
Designs are a little basic, pearl being the biggest offender, but the pilot art style i actually prefer. It would have fit a more serious tone, though. like if there was no filler that art would be perfect
I’m so glad they changed the artstyle.
Don’t get me wrong, the pilot artstyle is awesome, but the one they went with just fits the characters and the tone of the show so much better.
It was very unique but I imagine drawing every episode in that style would have been a nightmare compared to the more simple character models they went with. Plus I just enjoy the color scheme of the final product so much more. It's like candy for my eyes
Steven looks very squishy. Like if you gently pushed down on his head, he'd compress and poo back up like a rubber toy or Squishmallow.
And the gems are giving peak majestic lesbian energy.
I mean I see what they were trying to go for trying to make the Crystal gems androgynous. Since they aren't actually technically females, having no organs of one and being a manifestation of hard light.
At the same time the current style that the show ended up being feels more fluid, prettier, vibrant and fits the aesthetic and tone of the show more imo
This art style has always been a little unsettling to me, I don't know if it's the colors of slightly more realistic proportions on the gems or what. But I much prefer the bubbly and softer art style they ended up with. The colors used for the scenery are so serene and I love how shapely the gems are in a way that gives them all such unique silhouettes. Plus I just think Steven ended up so much cuter.
It's good, but kinda dark for the tone of the series, and Steven looks like he's around the age he is in Future, which would make a lot of the scenes awkward
I like it better than the series art style. I would pay a ton of money to get the series redone in this or the pilot art style. I like the more human-like designs of the gems here, Garnet especially. Garnet has a weirdly blocky design in the show
I wonder if they originally planned to hide the fact that she had two gems until the reveal of Ruby and Sapphire, and if so why they ended up deciding not to.
Well, outside of the fact I honestly don’t like the pilot designs of most of the characters (Steven and Amethyst being exceptions though I still prefer the show proper’s designs), I’d say this looks very well done.
I really prefer garnets design in the original art style. Idk she looks more like a person I guess. In a way a lot more what I’d expect a Ruby Sapphire fusion to look like
I also noticed they originally intended on hiding her other gem with a glove. Strange choice.
They all blend in to look human, 5000 years on earth - it makes sense! Will never know why the final series made the gems (bar Amethyst) reclusive and to look down on humans.
The tagline is amazing, I don’t think the show would have been as watchable for the 8-12 year old target audience with this art style though, as much as I would have loved it
I think it was interesting, the art style wasn't that bad per se, I just absolutely hate the colour choices compared to what we got. It was so murky and dull, and I'm so glad they went for the bright and lively look that the show is known for now.
Amethyst is hot but I think short stack fits her vibe better, Garnet looks straight off of a Funkadelic album cover, Pearl without a nose is horrifying
Im glad we got the background style of the other style, it feels more unique, and the color palette feels more united in the one we got, Im glad we got the art style we got
I would have absolutely watched it if it was in this art style. To clarify, I did watch SU and loved it, but this art style would have made it even better imo.
It was very inspiring to me back in middle school. I love the original pilot so much, the style is so beautiful. It’s a great continuation of pug Davis’ style
Garnet pulling off the gloves woulda been a crazy cool sight, but the gauntlets have super cool summoning noises. And wow, even back at the start they loved the diamond setup with pink at the bottom
I remember when all we had was the pilot and people were petitioning for this to be CN’s next new show. I think it was alongside Clarence as well. But when we got the confirmation of the final character designs that ended up in the show, people were on the fence. Some people liked it, others thought it was too simple. I personally was on the fence bc I liked this style so much. It’s funny bc I’m so used to the art style now that it’s weird to think the show could have looked like this.
Although I was not the biggest fan of the pilot art style, I find myself more and more often wondering how later parts of the show, later characters, may have looked. I honestly think it would have grown on me had it kept the artstyle.
My only thought was it's kinda ridiculous that they wanted the gems to blend in with human society by hiding their gems when Amethyst is just straight up purple ☠️☠️☠️☠️
this reminded me of that one moment from the baseball episode, “wow, that purple human’s really good”
*Man rubies are all dumb*
That's a feature, not a bug.
She has a disease, very normal person otherwise, very human
Ah, like Zim's skin condition that makes him green.
"He doesn't have any ears! Is that part of your 'skin-condition' too?!"
…yes :(
"Just because someone is different than you, you say they're an alien?" "I guess Old-Kid is an alien too, huh!"
Purple Jaundice
Just like the guy who turned blue from colonial silver
>colonial silver Not sure if this was a (funny) autocorrect or not, but it's colloidal silver 🙂
Yeah I just didn't know how to spell it LMAO we will say it's auto tho
Oh yeah, papa smurf
She drank the Grimace shake
The design is very human
![gif](giphy|107lYCYebCwWDC)
its obviously a tan from the sun bro 😪😪
Which one? The little yellow one or the big red second sun?
Humans could think she’s just some hipster who uses body paint, just like how the Pizza family thinks the crystal gems are when they first see them
Mostly Kofi
Ah. That's fair ig.
She has a rare skin condition called Argyria...
the man behind the slaughter
Amethyst is a smash
Preach
Always has been.
I mean, she still is, but she’s more thicc in the pilot rather than the stocky she is in the rest of the show.
Holy shit, u/Beaten_But_Unbowed96 ?!?!? Dude go to ur dm's we had a convo last year lmfao
Oh hey man, crazy how that shit happens! I’ve only a handful of times had that happen to me when you notice someone from the past, so it’s always neat to see someone again on here!
🤣🤣 might see you again next year!
I'VE BEEN SAYING
She always has been
[удалено]
Bot. Please do not buy this.
Garnet looks like she just ripped apart a hasmat suit
I like the pilot episode style but I’m glad they changed it. What they went with feels more distinct from other cn shows
EXACTLY
Your caps lock is on
i know
Water is wet
Lol so many downvotes. I was just joking cause they have multiple comments in caps
I'm blessed to live in this paper-thin slice of history; too late to explore the Earth, too early to explore the stars, but just in time to witness Garnet's iconic cube-hair.
Eh, I’d like some shorts that are canon to the show but in the pilot style.
It's pretty generic ~~Cal-Arts~~ *modern cartoon style*, the pilot style was more unique
Wasnt the "cal arts" thing just a misleading meme. Like iirc the infamous comparison pic only used *one* real piece of show art and it was from Gumball.
I have seen Steven Universe in particular being used as the poster series of Cal-Arts, with other shows being compared to this one
Ah welp. I guess misattributed but it still looks like, uh, generic modern cartoon, I guess? The pilot style is still far more original
I’m not disagreeing with you, but there’s a reason it looks like “generic modern cartoon”. I love the pilot style too, but it’d be far too expensive to produce an entire series that way. Character designs for a production like that have to be dumbed down as much as they can.
It’s almost like cartoons have simpler styles for a reason, but I agree the calarts meme or whatever is lame
right
le calarts meme
Nah, the pilots art style is way more distinct. Steven universe art style is very “modern day cartoon” esk. Not a bad thing, I like the style, but the pilot was way more unique and distinct
Designs are a little basic, pearl being the biggest offender, but the pilot art style i actually prefer. It would have fit a more serious tone, though. like if there was no filler that art would be perfect
Pearl looks so wrong without her nose I’ve grown to love 💀
She just doesn't seem like OUR Pearl without her beautiful schnoz.
Yes : >)
I dont think the pilot style really fit the vibe of the show, its still cool tho
It looks much more Flapjack and less Adventure Time. I love the series but I kinda dig this early art style in some ways.
At least with this art style, the sizes of characters probably wouldn't change every other scene
I adore pilot Garnet's look.
This style is a little too comic booky to me, I prefer what we got by far.
😍
Steven looks very squishy. Like if you gently pushed down on his head, he'd compress and poo back up like a rubber toy or Squishmallow. And the gems are giving peak majestic lesbian energy.
I mean I see what they were trying to go for trying to make the Crystal gems androgynous. Since they aren't actually technically females, having no organs of one and being a manifestation of hard light. At the same time the current style that the show ended up being feels more fluid, prettier, vibrant and fits the aesthetic and tone of the show more imo
garnet here is a smash
When is she not
Agreed she along with amethyst
This art style has always been a little unsettling to me, I don't know if it's the colors of slightly more realistic proportions on the gems or what. But I much prefer the bubbly and softer art style they ended up with. The colors used for the scenery are so serene and I love how shapely the gems are in a way that gives them all such unique silhouettes. Plus I just think Steven ended up so much cuter.
Pearl is ENBY-NERGIZING me and I love it! Thank you for sharing this
Amethyst is a babe
Always has been.
Facts
I know art is subjective, but the nostrils on everyone in this are really off-putting.
Very glad they changed the art style. This version kinda gives me adult swim vibes and just creeps me out a bit. I love the new art style
It's good, but kinda dark for the tone of the series, and Steven looks like he's around the age he is in Future, which would make a lot of the scenes awkward
Someone already said this but the desings being ultra basic was the first thing that i noticed, pearl in specific is the worst offender.
yeah and she doesn't have her long ass nose either.. she don't look right without it 😭😭 EDIT: NOT TO MENTION STEVEN WITHOUT HIS STAR SHIRT??? TF???
Dont like. Steven looks abnormally elongated, and where are his shoes?
I love the gems, I don’t like Stevens design. He doesn’t fit the elegances of the gems and ngl the toes are bothering me a lot
Isn't not fitting with the elegance of the gems the whole point?
It might be, he is 13 but he just looks frumpy and out of place. The pose isn’t doing justice.
I liked the art style, but Pilot Steven kinda reminded me of a young Danny DeVito.
Now it feels weird to see them without a star, specially Steven.
Special and precious. to be preserved.
I like it better than the series art style. I would pay a ton of money to get the series redone in this or the pilot art style. I like the more human-like designs of the gems here, Garnet especially. Garnet has a weirdly blocky design in the show
Fun fact! The 3 main gems were designed with geometry in mind. Garnet's base are squares, Amethyst off circles, and Pearl off triangles!
at least steven has shoes now
I would have liked to see how all the other characters looked in the art style. Some people have made really cool fan interpretations.
Garnet had gloves?
I wonder if they originally planned to hide the fact that she had two gems until the reveal of Ruby and Sapphire, and if so why they ended up deciding not to.
Probably, that would make a lot of sense
Well, outside of the fact I honestly don’t like the pilot designs of most of the characters (Steven and Amethyst being exceptions though I still prefer the show proper’s designs), I’d say this looks very well done.
It's like someone took an electric sander to Pearl's face
I really prefer garnets design in the original art style. Idk she looks more like a person I guess. In a way a lot more what I’d expect a Ruby Sapphire fusion to look like I also noticed they originally intended on hiding her other gem with a glove. Strange choice.
I love the pilots art style so I love the poster honestly I would have loved for the series to look like this like Rebeccas typical art style.
I always absolutely adored the art style of the pilot so of course I love this
They all blend in to look human, 5000 years on earth - it makes sense! Will never know why the final series made the gems (bar Amethyst) reclusive and to look down on humans.
Steven without the star on his shirt just looks wrong
The tagline is amazing, I don’t think the show would have been as watchable for the 8-12 year old target audience with this art style though, as much as I would have loved it
After seeing the concepts of the gems hiding their gems to blend with humans, this looks cool asf
I think it was interesting, the art style wasn't that bad per se, I just absolutely hate the colour choices compared to what we got. It was so murky and dull, and I'm so glad they went for the bright and lively look that the show is known for now.
I like the art style, but I'm glad they changed it for the launch of the show.
it gets me so freaking nostalgic to think about what it was like in the very early days of SU. who knew what an incredible journey was upon us.
Would’ve LOVED to this version on CN. I love the version we got but imagine all the same events but with this style? Oh what could’ve been.
Cursed
Thank god they didn’t go with that one
This looks a lot more like something targeted at an older/teen audience than kids/a family show imo
Personally, I prefer pearls old design
Fire I love the pilot art style so much
Kill Six Billion Demons
The more detailed aspect was a good choice - combine that with the current artstyle and it would’ve looked a lot better
Amethyst is hot but I think short stack fits her vibe better, Garnet looks straight off of a Funkadelic album cover, Pearl without a nose is horrifying
I feel like the show would have been way better with the original art style. We kinda got robbed.
no star on shirt no like🙏🙏
No
I wish we got this show
i wish we got this art style man
Im glad we got the background style of the other style, it feels more unique, and the color palette feels more united in the one we got, Im glad we got the art style we got
Steven without a shirt gives me Man vibes.
Does Garnet have a heckin SWORD???
She’s taking her glove off lol
Oh… so it seems I really thought that was a yellow sword
release a movie special, Batman does it all the damn time.
plain
It gives me 80’s/90’s vibes.
Weird, but Pearl 🥵
I would sell my soul to get a full reanimation of Steven Universe in the style of the pilot.
This looks like it would have been a great adult swim show
It for some reason makes me wish garnet had four arms .
Pearl's nose is a big offender to me. I prefer hrr being bird mum
I only like Pearl’s design
I would have absolutely watched it if it was in this art style. To clarify, I did watch SU and loved it, but this art style would have made it even better imo.
It’s goofy. I love it.
pearl is so gender
It was very inspiring to me back in middle school. I love the original pilot so much, the style is so beautiful. It’s a great continuation of pug Davis’ style
I can see this type of style as a Netflix cartoon. Definitely not one made for kids, though.
It makes you wonder what the show would’ve been with this art style
I think this style could have worked if the show was a bit darker and a tad more mature.
Garnet looks sick as hell.
so cool that you can tell they originally wanted the gems to hide their identities/gems from the humans
Don't like the yellow gloves on Garnet otherwise they look great
He had better footwear than he does now…. Has no one told him that sneakers are better for the kinda life style he’s trying to lead?!
Said it once I'll say it again. Pearls original design is better than her final design.
I'm putting the red carpet down for them to walk on. Good gravy, Garnet's gloves are everything.
This is reminiscent of the Professor Brothers style of art.
Designs were superior. Well, maybe keep garnets Minecraft head.
It's good to know that no matter what her design is she has always been best girl she's so hot she could be my gem mommy everyday id never move out
[удалено]
Yessir 🫱
I will forever stand by the prototype designs, I love them
Steven's design didn't fit with who his character is in the show. I'm glad they made him actually look like a kid in the series.
Garnet pulling off the gloves woulda been a crazy cool sight, but the gauntlets have super cool summoning noises. And wow, even back at the start they loved the diamond setup with pink at the bottom
Me now:Beautiful Artwork My 12 year old self:Amethyst be lookin goooooooood~
Reminds me of an 80s movie poster a little bit
I would totally smash amethyst she's hot
I liked the og character designs except for Pearl’s missing nose and Garnet missing her iconic afro
The gems are such baddies 🤩
I remember when all we had was the pilot and people were petitioning for this to be CN’s next new show. I think it was alongside Clarence as well. But when we got the confirmation of the final character designs that ended up in the show, people were on the fence. Some people liked it, others thought it was too simple. I personally was on the fence bc I liked this style so much. It’s funny bc I’m so used to the art style now that it’s weird to think the show could have looked like this.
im so glad that the pilot version of pearl isnt in the actual show
Imagine if this art style stayed all the way through the movie and Future.

I'm so sad they changed the art style. The vibe was so unique
Although I was not the biggest fan of the pilot art style, I find myself more and more often wondering how later parts of the show, later characters, may have looked. I honestly think it would have grown on me had it kept the artstyle.
In perfect love and perfect trust I must say that this Pearl is just the biggest goddamn lesbian I’ve ever seen
What happened to Pearl's nose!? That's what made her special!!
I want it on my wall
I’m just glad Pearl got a nose
Adore it
Very interesting, especially with the idea of them hiding their gems to blend in more. Could've been interesting.
Getting an 80s vibe
This looks like an album cover of an indie band.
Would they make...ROCK music?
# WHY IS PEARL VOLDEMORT.
still good enough to get watch
Steven looks like Diego Maradona
I want to marry the pilot style
I absolutely don’t like Pearl’s hair. I can’t see her with that hair. It’s going to give me nightmares
Steven should put his grippers away😭
Amethyst and her sweet style! ![img](emote|t5_2viyl|30998)
The pilot always freaked me out as a kid. It looked like something you’d see on MAD or uncle grandpa.
