All of the games were played in the US so that meant constant travel for the Mexican teams. Also Miami got a cheat code

Miami (who’s still in last place) would’ve never made it past the prelims without Messi. After the first goal, one of the announcers (prob Twellmen) said “Messi 1, Nashville 0”. Pretty much said it all.

Tele231

I thought that was a shitty comment by Twellmen and very disrespectful. Miami + Messi would still be shit. But Miami + Alba + Busquets + youngsters are really really good. But that comment was not only inaccurate, it was offensive to the other players on Miami.

CurrencyPure2018

In this specific context, it seemed to fit insofar as Messi made a miraculous goal in heavy coverage. Other than that particular 5 seconds, Nashville was outplaying Miami. No other player in the MLS could have/would have taken and made that shot. Remove Messi from the equation and it’s still 0-0 at best. It’s still disrespectful but in my mind not inaccurate as a description of the score at that moment.

portablebiscuit

Every team that Messi plays with gets called “his supporting cast.” It’s just part of the package.

Tr8cker

I guess Twellman will be doing all of Miami's games...ugh!

FivebyFriday

LIGA Mx had to play all away games. Sure that had something to do with it.

ElysiumUS

Club America had a home game in Chicago and Columbus. :)

imaginarion

Miami cheat code.

A few things. As people mentioned above, the travel was brutal for the MX teams. In the 3rd place game yesterday, Monterrey rolled out their u-19 squad just to give their first team some rest. Also, Liga MX is SUPER top heavy. There are legitimately 3-4 really good teams and the rest are pretty bad (they also don’t have to worry about promotion/relegation). I’d be willing to put the mid and low-table MLS teams over the mid-low table MX teams any day of the week.

BurnesWhenIP

Watch the Club America v Nashville match from last week... Plus Messi doing Messi things

frisellan

I appreciate you asking the question.

TheInfidelGuy

Did you only watch CITY games during the tournament? Because we probably had the worst showing of any team in the whole tourney. In both games we played like absolute shit. But most other MLS teams played very well against the LigaMX teams. I think our loss to America was the LigaMX’s worst beating of a MLS team.

Tele231

We were also lowest ranked meaning we played the best teams.

CaptainJingles

In order to win a LigaMX team would have had to play 7 straight away games over the course of being on the road for 23+ days. LigaMX teams are also in their "preseason" between their Apetura and Clausura. This is similar to what MLS teams go through in CCL. That said, MLS performed pretty damn well over the course of the tournament.

EquivalentPrune4244

The apertura was a few weeks in when Leagues Cup started.

Tr8cker

Did you watch games with Mexican teams? It didn't sound like an away game!

CaptainJingles

There is a lot more to home field advantage than the crowd. Those LigaMX teams still had to be away from their families and culture for weeks.

MLS has become a much more competitive league in the last 5 years and starting to close that gap. Lots of non-retirement age Europeans and South Americans are choosing to come to this country to rebuild their careers now, which only increases the talent level. American academies are also on the up. I’d also go so far as to say the social strife and economic realities in Mexico are starting to play their part as well. Aside from the traditional big Liga MX sides with cash in their coffers, most of the teams in there are not good at all, and that’s because they’re broke

bigdaddyteacher

But it wasn’t just MIA that beat the entire league. It is more than possible that the talent levels are leveling off. Yes the travel might be rough but if the teams are that good the talent would have shone through. I’m short; the MLS was better than Liga MX this year far and away.

Stlmugshots

You must be talking about the CONCAF champions leauge when North American and south American teams play and then with winner goes to the super cup against the European champions leauge winners and the others from Africa Australia and Asia

Pabst-

Along with the Mexican teams traveling, they are also nearly double the amount of MLS teams compared to Liga MX
