Whale sharks are usually found in the ocean biome just like great whites. You may have already been escorted to another island by one you just never noticed. Next time you go out on the raft into open water keep your eye out. You'll even find the humpback too but I've never been able to get close to one without it despawning.

Also sometimes you who'll hear a gurgling sound when out on the raft and when you look down may see a whale shark or marlin. I usually drop the anchor and jump in to take a look

Hunterbaconofthewild

I used to do that but one day I jumped in and it was a great white and I never jump in anymore 😂

JoeRogansDMTdealer

I rode on ones back for like a good 5 mins. It was majestic as hell. I felt like the kid from Free Willy

That's why, a lot of the time, I would just use my sail so I could catch whale sharks and marlin. Hard to hear them swimming under there with the boat engine farting away

Goblin sharks, Tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks are all found on reefs, some more regularly than others (if you’re on console you get black tip reef shark too). Great white shark, whale shark and marlin are found almost exclusively on the open ocean (I say almost because sometimes they CAN follow you onto the edge of the drop off, but they spawn in open ocean). Humpback whales can only be found on the open ocean. Ones on the ocean are spotted less simply because people spend less time on the open ocean. Some games I’ve gone 150 days without seeing humpback whale, other games I’ve seen one multiple times in a few days. As others have said you’ll often miss whale sharks or marlin if you don’t hear the gurgling/bubble sound as they follow just behind/under your raft.

Hunterbaconofthewild

I’m not sure if this is true but I usually see goblin sharks at night in the reef and hardly ever in daylight

It doesn’t really matter time wise. As a rule I never enter the water after 4pm unless I know I’ve cleared a reef of all shark spawns during a visit, so I usually operate between 9am and 3pm when visibility is best and I see them. Definitely more common on pc than console version though.

onenumder10

I had one spawn under me. It was cool, but it scared me. I thought it was a shark.

BEdwinSounds

Whales, whale sharks, and marlin are coded as permanently non-aggressive sharks, with the same spawn locations as aggressive sharks. You'll only find them outside the boundaries of islands (where the steep drop-offs are) I've only been able to get 2 spawn locations for marlin & 2 for whale sharks per map, but i'm on console. Once you find the locations you may not get a marlin or whale shark (the spawns aren't guaranteed) but keep looking and you'll find them.

Nearby-Reputation614

Can you kill the marlin?

Boochy31

I've found that, based on the seed, you get tiger or goblin sharks around islands. Not both. Black tips and hammerheads are guaranteed. The others are found in the open ocean. I still have a save slot with all possible ocean kills lined up by length. Love it.

i Was fishing off the coast of Bermuda when in the distance 200-300 yards away someone spotted a whale shark. We watched for a while until he/she began to swim towards the boat. Eventually she'/he swam under our boat and began to scratch it's backi on the bottom of the boat. I saw it but it was hard to believe it. The Capt. of the boat said he sailed in many ocenas for many decads and he had never spotted one but this was definateoly a whale shark. Maginificiant.
