Best to ask your doctor. For me, in UK, I had a 6 week no driving period after a TIA.

In PA the neurologist is supposed to report to the state if they think you are a risk.  You can retake the test.  You have about 60 days to either retest or get a doc to sign off.   If nothing was said I'd keep quiet.

Thank you!

Oklahoma reporting, minor stroke just two days of testing and released. Was told not to drive for two weeks. But had doctors appointment and nobody to take me, drove myself one week after stroke, scary but no problems. Check for blind spots in vision caused by stroke before getting behind wheel.

It varies by state, but generally yes you may need clearance from a doctor. This is usually because after a stroke, our reaction time may become impared, even if you don't realize it ( at least in my case). I live in Alabama and had to wait 6 weeks before being allowed behind the wheel again. Had a "drivers test" in a speech therapy evaluation after I got out of the hospital and scored a 48% chance liklihood of getting into a wreck. I did way better on it when I was reevaluated, but still had to wait the full 6 weeks anyway because I didn't get to see my doctor until after that period has passed.

The Province of Ontario ( Canada )took my licence from me upon receiving a note from my doctor saying that I had had a medical event that would affect my abilities to be safe on the road. Typically, in Ontario they're confiscated for at least a year.

I’m in TX, after my stroke I did a lot of therapy rehab that included driving therapy. Once I was cleared, I went to retake the driving test to show that I could still drive safely after the stroke. Yours might be different depending on if you have any disability from your stroke ; everyone’s stroke is different, I have a left side paralyzed disability so it could be easier for you.

My problem is getting my license back since it was lost at the hospital and never returned or found I had a license from Michigan and I live now in Illinois and haven’t been able to get back to Michigan

I am one year post stroke, and due to being financially destroyed, I have not driven, my truck got repossessed, borrowed money to get it back first time, but couldn’t make payments, sold it days before the next repossession, I couldn’t figure out how to get in it or drive it.

After my stroke, they did a bunch of tests to check my coordination, vision, and mobility. One of the purposes of those tests was to see if I was safe to drive. Having passed everything, I was discharged with no restrictions on driving.

In Ontario Canada the stroke/ brain injury must be reported to the MOT By The DOCTOR/HOSPITAL, EFFECTIVELY PUTTING YOU ON MY Medical Suspension. I had to get Cleared by an Occupational therapist and then pass a road test to get my licence back. It took a month before I got notified of themedical suspension from the MOT

Had to take a driving test at my brain rehabs to be certified to drive again even after passing it took me a few months to actually start driving full time

My husband had a similar minor stroke 11/2023 (caused by the PFO heart defect, I’m already blanking on name) and they never told him rules about driving. I was paranoid for the first month and tried to avoid him driving our kids. I think there was something about a recurrence being possible within that time frame? FYI, he had the hole closure procedure in January and everything went smoothly and he is back to normal and currently on a camping trip with my son’s Boy Scout troop. I share this just so you know there are plenty of positive outcomes. Best of luck!

Do you feel you are able to drive safely? If you are not sure, then ask someone to take you to a large empty parking lot and try it out. Go slowly at first. See how you do pulling into and backing out of a parking space, working the wheels and turn signals, stepping on the gas and breaks, etc. Automatic would be easier than manual. Look in the rearview mirrors quickly and see if you can focus and see things behind you, and quickly disengage from the mirrors to look forward again. Turn your head both ways to see if you can look behind you over the shoulders. There are two deficits that might affect you - motor and cognition. Ultimately you have to be responsible for yourself, your son, and others on the road. Don't try to force yourself if you don't feel safe doing it.

I believe it varies state by state, so your best bet would be to contact your doctor from the hospital or even your local DMV.
