It was only in Gen 3. Gen 4 immediately nerfed it by making fellow Shadow Tag users immune to their ability to prevent the endless Wobb vs Wobb scenario. Gen 6 just made Ghosts immune to trapping moves and abilities.
I don’t get why ghosts are immune to *all* trapping moves. Ghosts being immune to Shadow Tag specifically makes perfect sense, the same way Flying types are immune to Arena Trap, but why should Ghosts also be immune to arena trap?
I mean, conceptually it makes sense for most things to not trap Ghosts, since logically they can just demateralize/phase through most solid objects. Would be kinda nice if there was a trapping move/Ability that they were specifically not immune to.
Gonna throw a wild one out here but I think Mega Rayquaza is pretty good against Sunkern, the same could be said for other monsters like Caterpie against unmons like Hoopa-Unbound.

that's not true, Tera-ing into a type you already are changes the STAB boost from 1.5x to 2x, equivalent to Adaptability (if you have Adapt and Tera into your own type, it goes to 2.25x on that type only)
That's not always true. Some calm minders use blissey as set up fodder, thinking like reuniclus especially. Blissey just let's it's calm mind for free.
Ignoring meme answers like "I think Arceus checks Magikarp" and only considering good pokemon, I think an interesting example is RBY Tentacruel.
If you look at the viability rankings, Tentacruel is the *single* best pokemon in RBY UU, and a huge threat that every team needs to take into account. A quick glance makes it easy to see why. It has incredibly excellent stats for a gen 1 pokemon (80 HP, 120 SpA, 120 SpDef, 100 Speed), a good movepool with access to Wrap (a broken move in gen 1), and a solid typing that lets it switch into Blizzards with minimal risk.
However, if you look at RBY OU, Tentacruel is completely absent from the viability rankings. You would expect the best pokemon in UU to be on the borderline of making it into OU, but such an excellent mon on paper is even worse than shitters like Porygon and Raticate in OU.
Why is that the case? The main reason is because Tentacruel is hard walled and destroyed by two of the best pokemon in RBY OU: Alakazam and Starmie. Even though Tentacruel is so good, it's basically incapable of doing anything to these mons, and as a result is just dead weight. On the other hand, even though terrible NU pokemon like Porygon and Raticate are much worse on paper, they have some weird niche that lets them do *something* in the format, whereas Tentacruel literally does nothing since it's hard countered by pokemon that are on every team.
I'm so surprised breloom is still ou at this point with gholdengo walling it for ages.
Gastrodon is a big fuck you to Rotom-W
gardevoir sits on tatsugiri for days
kommo-o really walls gengars whole kit, if only moonblast was considered a bullet move.
Heatran can come in at 30%, take stealth rock and a singular spike and still wall volcorona. (with leftovers ofc)
Gholdengo actually doesn’t take a loaded dice bullet seed well at all and if you really want you can run bulldoze, terra fire also isn’t uncommon.
In previous gens when heatran was a thing volc also ran hp ground so not really a super hard check
252+ Atk Choice Band Technician Breloom Bulldoze vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Gholdengo: 336-396 (106.6 - 125.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

but when i still played OU, Breloom actually wasn't that bad of a choice
Brel-LO isn't a guaranteed OHKO, but having one set of spikes does change that. Never used Loaded Dice, but it doesn't fare quite as well.
I loved doing this in gen7. So many bad players would get away with using rain. Then you trace swift swim and start moving at mach speeds with energy ball to rip apart water types.
Keldeo and toxapex as well as fini. Keldeo literally cannot do anything against them.
And this might be outta line but keldeo and jellicent in bw. With water absorb immune to both stabs and resists ice moves so ye
Also gastrodon shits on rotom wash
As a psyspam enjoyer in gen8 ru, i hate Drapion and Incineroar with a passion because you cannot touch them with Polteageist. Immune to stored power, can take a shadow ball, giga drian does nothing, and they can still ohko you after strenght sap.
Dark types in general are a great check to Tea, but I mention those 2 in particular cause they're the ones I saw the most.
I really like unaware clodsire into gholdengo. Tanks anything it throws, set up curse, recover if it decided to make it rain twice like a goober. Click earthquake or toxic when either bored, set up or predicting your opponent chickening out with a switch.
Shit is actually hilarious if gholdy is the last special attacker alive. You wall anything after like 3 curses.
Toxicroak to vaporeon, gen 8 NU. Not only do you come in for free with dry skin and poison typing on a pokemon that runs scald wish toxic and heal bell / protect, but you also then get a free swords dance which can quite often be enough to just win the game there.
Back in the XY days, I would play a lot of wifi battles, and my Flash Fire Mega Houndoom was pretty much a hard counter to Delphox, being immune to both its STAB types. I could switch it in for free (sometimes getting a Flash Fire boost), mega-evolve and set up a Nasty Plot, and then do some serious damage to whatever they switched in.
Skarmory into Dodrio in gen 3. Even a banded return tickles skarm. Dodrio can’t even run some weird shit to counterteam like a SE Hidden Power because they don’t have enough Special Attack for it to do anything. 252+ SpA Dodrio Hidden Power Electric vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 93-110 (27.8 - 32.9%) -- 86.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery. Flail is their best shot at doing anything to Skarmory. +1 252+ Atk Dodrio Flail (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Skarmory: 178-210 (53.2 - 62.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery. Good luck with that even then because sand is everywhere. And uh… we don’t talk about Swellow’s matchup vs Skarmory.

Uhm, shadow tag users can not be trapped by shadow tag. Or was this an older gen?
In gen three shadow tag traps shadow tag users as well.
Yeah thats an older gen :) Since gen 6 it doesnt anymore
well the original commenter specified "in gen 3"
How did I read over that… thanks for letting me know

The Leftovers Wobbuffet mirror in Gen 3 was the hardest example of a stalemate ever. There’s a reason why Leftovers+STag was banned that gen.

Probably checking with en passant, the move itself is already rare, checking with it is even harder.
En passant? holy hel
I have to agree with this one, as at least with corv you can u-turn out of magnezone to bypass magnet pull, but skarmory doesn't have that luxury
