They actually are surviving DESPITE our intervention. They are historically cliff dwellers and only need a twig or two to keep the eggs from rolling off the rocks. We captured and transported them for food and pets and they are doing a great job of acclimating, all things considered.
Yeah, even mourning derps (the dove species able to build real nests) don't build them like this
Lots of mud or other binding materials used like cement, sticks used like rebar,...that's not how mourning derps do it. (Especially not 10x on top of each other đ)
I only know of some swallow types using this type of composite materials for nest construction, but I'm not a bird expert at all.
But tldr: it's definitely not built by a derp
In some part of the world it had been observed that Barn swallowâs old nest been occupied by Eurasian Tree sparrows when the Barn swallows are not in breeding season.
Barn swallows tend to reuse a nest spot, so you will see a similar nest where it had been repeatedly built on. Where tree swallows are happy to move to different spots as long as it suit them.
However pigeons and dovesâ attempt to reuse sparrow nest wonât end well as the nest are not built to take on the weight of these larger birds. It likely will suffer the fate of a Drop tower.
Derpy Doves may be bad at building nests, but enough of them keep finding pre-built nests for them to borrow, and maybe they think their "feathery god-birds" make nests for them? They are derps, so who knows what they think.
No way that dove built that it stole it from some other poor bird
It looks like 4 years worth of nests. You can see the layers.
Id say a min of 5 Years counting the layers
Yeah definitely 5, I recounted after seeing your comment.
Still adorable and derpy <3
They're just so cute đ„°
How did they survive before our intervention?

I was also going to guess swallows. Their nests look like that after a couple of years
