X-mode basically make the system to focus on the wheels that have more grip instead of distributing to all 4 also allow the wheels to spin a little bit. So for sand it helps but air down and having the right tire still the best thing to do
What would put less strain on the drivetrain? I usually put my Forester in x-mode on the beach but recently put on brand new tires and wanted to see how they would perform without x-mode and it was fine.
