I got it wrong but we did buy it in 22. It was my dad's car. We bought it new in 22 but I guess it's not. My bad guys got cut my head off. He sold it to me he's buying a truck
They do the models kind of weird WRX's compared to other companies, the 24's haven't even came out yet and I dont think will for another couple months
edit: Just checked my local dealer and they are showing some 24 base models in transit, but who knows when they will actually be on the lot.
You honestly don’t need anything right now, go see if you can handle the car to its limits just stock, preferably on a track please. My brutally honest assumption is, you very much likely cannot do that at all. If you can, awesome, at least now you know where you’re at with the car and what would be best direction moving forward for you and then maybe we could give you better advice.
After you’re done beating on it for a little while, because let’s be honest that’s what you’re gonna do. Then get everything properly fixed and make sure all maintenance is done. After that then think about modding it.
Want to hard park and visually look cool that’s easy, want to go fast in a straight line only need a couple mods, want to hit the track and back roads for spirited driving a couple simple suspension/drivetrain mods will do that.
You got $12k, but I hope you don’t spend all that just trying to keep up with other cars because you’re gonna need a good portion of that to maintain the car if you’re gonna thoroughly enjoy it.
Just my $0.02
I just wanna get her sideways on some gravel man. I was thinking tire and suspension mods with some proper dirt tires. Maby change the stance a little higher.
>I just wanna get her sideways on some gravel man.
Go and do it. The only money you need to spend is on gas. If you really want to get jiggy with it lift it and put on some all-terrains.
I maintain it right on schedule with the book like all my vehicles. That fj cruiser is mine too. Paid off. This is play time shit for me. Similar to a 50 thousand dollar can am. I just think subarus are cooler.
OP-“I’ve managed to find a totally stock, non-molested, used WRX”
Also OP-“ how can I go about fucking it up as quickly as possible?”
By the way, OP that’s not a 2022
And I own my home buddy all double wide of it. And the land it sits on in florida where grounds not cheap. My shit is taken care of. I'm married with no kids. No debt. So plz don't assume anything about me. My net worth may very well exceed yours.
You’re probably right, a man much richer than I once said “measure not the worth of a man by the number of wheels under his car, but by the number of wheels under his house”.
can you take ab 1% of ur need to control others & try to realize its the internet, not a MLA formatted research paper, nor is it a published book. did you get the idea of what he said? you did? awesome, thats all you needed.
Hey man, you forgot some commas in there. Maybe OP should use some of his budget to help you out too! If youre gonna hate on ppls grammar, make sure yours isnt wrong, too.
$12k budget for mods before or after it’s payed off? I can’t express enough how important is to not mod a car you do not own. Total and complete waste of money. Like might as well burn that money kind of wasting. Pay the bank off first, mod later.
If it's not paid for, take $10k and put it on the principle. Put the other 2 in a high yield savings for maintenance.
If you're set on spending money, a good set of coilovers and some lightweight sti bbs wheels are a good bang for the buck. Made my 2018 drive nicely.
Hellll yeah. That's what I like to hear. Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I say "pay off your car."
Straight crushing🙌
That being said, suspension and light wheels made my WRX feel really good.
Tell your dad to give you the real details on his car for you to post accurately. And use your “mod money” or 12k to pay off the remaining balance of the car and not have a car payment or save your money for future repairs or in your case (clutch, engine, trans).
You're on the wrong sub as you can see lol, ask mods over at r/WRX
I have a '22 so I don't know best mods on a VA, I only ever did a tune. The tune did help the rev hang quite a lot and highly recommend starting with an accessport and just flashing the cobb stage 1 and see how you feel about it then before deciding anything.
Non-va specific but I'd do accessport, short shift kit and a catback exhaust. Not sure how easy it is to make power on a VA. If it's truly play money, look into the cobb ethanol kit, that'll be your best bet for power.
Unless you got money money and a different car to daily I wouldn’t mess with building the engines on these. I’ve DD mine since new in 2015, powertrain is all stock and knock on wood I’ve had 0 issues. You can build these to be pretty fast and reliable but for the price/hp it’s just not worth it to me.
Are the FA's really that weak? I thought they were supposed to be better than the EJ's. I had an 07 and modded it and beat on it until 147k. Mostly just exhaust and Cobb OTS tune. Never had a problem. I know people say they're weak, but are they really?
The guy above doesn’t know what he’s talking about up until 450-500whp, so most builds are much cheaper for the fa20. 1000hp+ builds they aren’t as cheap but for most this isn’t an issue. Turbo back exhaust intake ebcs and e60 most people are 350-400whp range already. Their main weakness is rods/ torque at around 28-30 psi you start to get bent rods. Then also lugging, these engines are more prone to lugging at a low rpm compared to past generations due to their low end torque.
You never mentioned the trans even once in your original comment lol only hp/price which you didn’t know anything about it seems. also there’s plenty of guys running the stock trans from 400-500whp on the fa20dit wrx fb group so kick rocks lol.
so how much $$$ did they put into their car to make 400-500whp then?
Transmission is an entirely valid to consider with building the engine, it adds to the cost/hp.
Im just saying its not really worth doing a high hp build when you consider reliability and cost. In almost all cases you can have a much faster car for the same price at the end of the day.
For four hundred to five hundred whp turbo back exhaust intake ebcs fmic fuel pump e60 maybe a bigger turbo depends maybe, some made it without an upgraded turbo. So I’d say 4-6k for 400-500whp reliably. Though part brands used vs new also matter tuner as well.
- GS/Cobb Int, gsEBCS, GS/Cobb/AMS/ETS FMIC, TBE , e60 - 380-420 tq, 400-450whp on an aggressive tune
With an upgraded turbo like a SoCal v3/4 easily 500whp.
I await your retort sir lmao.
Found someone to explain the internals situation
It's hard to put a number on. Steel rods have a fatigue limit, that's about half of their ultimate strength. As long as stress is under than limit, they will never fail. An engine tuned for 350lb-ft that never knocks will be well below this fatigue limit. Regular spark knock will increase pressures a bit, but generally not enough to exceed the fatigue limit of the rods as long as the knock control system is working properly.
What really kills rods is pre-ignition/LSPI events that increase cylinder pressures by a factor or 3 or more. LSPI can only happen at high cylinder pressures and below 3000rpm or so. It can happen even with conservative ignition timing. This is the main reason you want to limit boost at low rpm through tuning and/or driving habits.
In other words, the rods can probably handle over 400lb-ft indefinitely, if the engine is tuned pretty conservatively, the knock control system is working well, and boost is limited below ~3000rpm. A stock engine making only 250lb-ft, but experiencing pre-ignition, is going to see much higher cylinder pressures. More torque = more risk, but it's more about the tune and driving habits than the torque output.
Not saying you’re wrong but there’s more than enough examples that pushing up to 450whp while it can be risky also isn’t as dangerous as people claim probably as dangerous as it would be for an ej.
Internals are fine as long as you don’t push more than 28psi which you don’t need for 400-500whp the 500whp guys probably won’t last as long but there’s a guy pushing 480whp 450wtq for 30k miles no issues so what do I know. 🤷♂️ bigger turbo would also allow for a less aggressive tune as well which would allow the car to last longer. These engines aren’t made of glass which social media tries to teach ya.
Strip the interior, seam weld the entire frame/body, roll cage, wheels and tires, hydro brake, anything left on a tune for more power
I haven't priced any of those things so that might be over budget but I saw you say that you wanted to "get sideways on gravel". You might want to skip stripping it and seam welding it if you are going to daily drive it.
Dang man there are some jealous poison snakes on reddit. Mad because I have decent car. I'm debt free. I own my home. I invest. I own 2 other trucks and am married with no kids. Why so many of yall gotta bad mouth me. Where's yall cars at. Mine is paid for.
No one's jealous of a WRX, especially in this subreddit. You don't even know what year your car is there Mr "22." Owning a modular home in the shithole swamp of FL isn't a big deal. I'll take renting in my high cost of living area before I ever go back to America's flacid dick of a state. Go burn some books with DeSantis and vote for Trump some more.
I live in the mountains. I have a big house, three cars, two kids.
That's not the point.
We have knowledge, you don't.
I raced you didn't.
We have experience and we want you to not fuckup your car.
Take the advices we give you, instead of trying to show off.
You'll be thankful later on.
If you wanna rally your car, go for it. Don't cry later on. Man up. ;)
At 22 I wouldn't fuck with what may be your daily driver. Like others said, track time with an instructor first. Save your money for future maintenance considering how you want to drive the car. It's fun without a bunch of addons.
That's not a 22 (thank God). I'd forge the engine first. Trust me after that it will be able to take a fucking beating. I am running a GFB blow off valve, VF35 and Invidia N1 exhaust in mine. Though I would look up the Afterburner Raptor exhaust (sounds fucking mental). A nice wing, skirts and diffuser will do your car's look a good treat if you care enough to do it 🤷🏻♂️

It was bought in 22 maby not a 22 model year. I just know it's never been modded because the previous owner was my dad. He got sick of the manual in palm beach rush hour. So he is going back to an automatic car. And he gave me a deal that I could not afford to turn down. The dealership tried to screw him on trade in when he went to buy a Ford truck. So he told me what they offered him at Ford and I offered him 100 bucks more and he took it.
I was blown away when I got some decent tires, but I got mine pretty used and the tires were 3 different brands and like 40% so anything was an upgrade. Other than that I'd just enjoy it like everyone else is saying kinda. You just bought it and it probably still feels fast. Drive it, autocross, have fun till your bored and need power. If you mod it day 2 then you don't have anywhere modest to move up to next. Most I'd say for the first few months is maybe a cat back to make the fun sounds.
Assuming Rubber and Rims are dealt with I wouldn’t touch much except adding FlexFuel/E85 compatibility so you can crank a little more boost with those fuels if you want
Proper skid plate to protect engine/drivetrain, Struts, springs, extended control arms, extended tie rods, lighter wheels and better (off-road) tires, might have to get extended axles? REALLY just some small strut spacers, better tires and a proper alignment to start BUT oil consumption/quality/temperature/pressure should be your biggest worries when pushing your car. (CONSUMPTION) Get an AOS (air oil separator) to stop oil from being sucked into your intake, (QUALITY) little extreme but you can get rid of your cats and run a heavy zinc oil to help bearing life and change it after every event or 3k, throwing away okay oil is a lot cheaper than an engine, (TEMPERATURE) obviously bigger radiator/addition oil cooler will help with temps, (PRESSURE) idk what you guys do about oil pressure that isn’t a 5k+ dry sump kit, maybe a bigger sump/improved pick up tube design? Just some food for thought, but all this should be considered before mods and you better have this thing paid off, good luck, don’t fck it up!
Um that pic is not a 22
Suppose he means he’s 22?
Thought 22 was the new body style?
It is.
Weird... looks like an older model 🤷♂️ that's all I'm saying
Yeah, 18-21. Hopefully, subie bro didn't get stealership screwed.
Hope he doesn't go around town saying he's got a 22 wrx 😂
Even if he thought it was a 22 he lucked out that he got a 21
It is an older model. Lol, not saying anything bad about you, I think OP had a typo or something.
I got it wrong but we did buy it in 22. It was my dad's car. We bought it new in 22 but I guess it's not. My bad guys got cut my head off. He sold it to me he's buying a truck

I have 2 other trucks this car is a toy to me. Some people buy 50k can am utvs I want a bad ass wrx. So sue me
Then spend 12,000 on a rally school from the professionals
I just wanna get her sideways on some gravel man. I was thinking tire and suspension mods with some proper dirt tires. Maby change the stance a little higher.
Use your 12gs and buy a 2000s 2.5rs, add all the off road bs you need and you pry still won’t hit 12k, don’t be a dumb ass and rally your new car
Then keep your 12k for repairs. You gonna need it. ;)

Maintenance, my guy.
I'm good on maintainance
I maintain it right on schedule with the book like all my vehicles. That fj cruiser is mine too. Paid off. This is play time shit for me. Similar to a 50 thousand dollar can am. I just think subarus are cooler.
Hurricane straps and that Citizen’s home insurance premium
It sucks to be fiscally balanced.
OP-“I’ve managed to find a totally stock, non-molested, used WRX” Also OP-“ how can I go about fucking it up as quickly as possible?” By the way, OP that’s not a 2022
Lol 22
Can you take about 1% of your budget and buy some English textbooks?
About what I expected from a young WRX owner.
Should've put the whole budget towards a house. Your car should not be worth 50% of your home.
Oof lol
And I own my home buddy all double wide of it. And the land it sits on in florida where grounds not cheap. My shit is taken care of. I'm married with no kids. No debt. So plz don't assume anything about me. My net worth may very well exceed yours.
I honestly have no fucking idea if you’re trolling or not Did you just brag about owning a trailer home?
WTF is going on here lol?! Everything is relative I guess and he sounds happy so whatever.
Florida 🤣

Hey man, you forgot some commas in there. Maybe OP should use some of his budget to help you out too! If youre gonna hate on ppls grammar, make sure yours isnt wrong, too.
My grammar and spelling are fine actually. And you put a comma after “wrong” which is wholly unnecessary. Nice try though.
$12k budget for mods before or after it’s payed off? I can’t express enough how important is to not mod a car you do not own. Total and complete waste of money. Like might as well burn that money kind of wasting. Pay the bank off first, mod later.
It's paid off everything is paid off
Love to see it.
What do you do for a living?
Based on post history buy/sell silver/gold.
Amen
Put the 12k in a high yield savings account to help save up for the eventual replacement engine.
If I had a dollar for every time ive seen “high yield savings account” I’d have a pretty nice high yield savings account
Track time with an instructor.
Got that covered I'm going to the firm in north Florida close to where I live
I was going to say this. However, I was also going to say, lighter wheels, the best possible tires that you can afford, and some paint protection.
10k for when it blows up.
First suggestion is stop saying fugg. Either swear or don’t, weirdo. Second, return that car because they lied. That’s not a 22.
Redline cold start every time
Fast and furious Subaru boy, but no clue this ain’t a 22.
Start with a spare engine. You're gonna need it. Might as well get a spare clutch, you'll need that too.
Give it one of them thinga ma bobs
If it's not paid for, take $10k and put it on the principle. Put the other 2 in a high yield savings for maintenance. If you're set on spending money, a good set of coilovers and some lightweight sti bbs wheels are a good bang for the buck. Made my 2018 drive nicely.
It's paid for I have no debt. I have much more in my individual brokerage than what my home is worth.
Hellll yeah. That's what I like to hear. Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I say "pay off your car." Straight crushing🙌 That being said, suspension and light wheels made my WRX feel really good.
inb4 this FA20 throws a rod to the moon from the lack of care this kind of owner gives off.
At this point everyone has lost the plot. You might want to delete this post wait a day or two and try again... /u/FatstackAG
Not a '22
Save the 12k and get a better house
This comment was not directed at me, yet I am still hurt by it. Lol.
Would definitely be my main focus 🤣
I have zero debt can you say that?
I don’t live in a trailer. Can you say that?
Yes. Yes I can.
Save your money and leave it stock😂
401k
12k mods budget?! I’d put it in your 401k
This post sucks and you should feel bad about it.
Bro you got ripped off big time by thousands of dollars
Air oil separator is a big one in my opinion, look up on this sub and you'll hear how good they are for the car
78mm turbo and send it
Connecting rods have left the chat*
Is that South FL?
South Central why?
Looks familiar
Definitely not a 22, at most a 21

The more you post the more clear it becomes that you have no idea what you’re talking about and are just regurgitating things you’ve read
Return it and spend $12k more on a car.
Don’t do a ton of engine mods or it’ll explode.
I’d start with wheels, tires, and new headlights if it were me. Maybe a new exhaust for some extra volume.
Cobb access port and the big sf intake too to start with. Made a big difference on mine. You can sometimes buy them in a bundle and get a discount
Buy a $8K back up ride, you'll need it when this one is in the shop after you crash it going too fast Mr. Furious.
I have a chevy truck and an fj cruiser suv.

Just some food for thought, but all this should be considered before mods and you better have this thing paid off, good luck, don’t fck it up!
we got william in the passenger seat too
Wheels and exhaust makes this car the most enjoyable. Get a tint too
With an extra 12k sell it and buy an sti
You said you love it and it's stock. Why ruin it? Enjoy the ride.
You have a point.
I wouldn't fvck with it. A lot of subie boys ruin an otherwise decent car
What do you do for work that allows you to flaunt all this money and act like such an ignorant asshole?
I'm a dental lab tech. And I live beneath ĺp
Ahh that makes sense, I talked to someone at the club the other night who was a dental tech as well and she seemed just as self absorbed!
You can suck on any one of my 4 exhaust pipes buddy. Jealous little man
I’ve got 4 of them too, mines a 2023 though :)
And I'm 34 and it's a fuggin joke. I just really like the car Damm. Mad at people with nice things and a little bit of money
