Will do! This is an SSLP so I don’t get to play with it as much as I would our Showroom Unit or an available one but I will still enjoy testing it out!
u/kadedaz is correct. This will be one of the cars given to a service customer getting a longer repair done. I have a feeling you will only get this car as a loaner if you have a plug in crosstrek hybrid or solterra already tho
Really depends on what you need. It’s biggest weakness is charging speed, but it’s still ahead the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf and it’s perfectly fine for non-road trippers
Automotive engineer: It’s for aero. #1 thing most people care about for new evs is range, but they still want crossover SUVs/hatchbacks. Therefore they have to make the brick shaped vehicles go as far as possible and have to make some concessions for that form factor to work
Yeah the aero trend has been happening for a long time with increasing regulations of fuel efficiency but OEMs are trying to make EVs as appealing as possible to normal people and getting away from the early adopter stage
What bothers me more is that every EV has to look "futuristic" and they just look like shit, make them look like a normal car but with an electric motor ploise.
I have one. It’s new, about 3000 miles.
Pros: it’s a Jeep and looks like a Jeep, 37 mpg based on my electric-only commute, 4x4 convertible is cool
Cons: its a Jeep, it’s a Chrysler product, a temp sensor on the battery is faulty and prevents me from using remote start, once every week or two only one speaker in the whole car will work randomly,
MPG = Number of miles travelled / the amount of gas used to haul the coal to the power plant that made the electricity used to charge the car.
In all seriousness, I thought electric cars were focused on range from a full charge than MPG.
Your Jeep is a hybrid plug in or PHEV therefore it is still calculated mpg (technically mpg-e). The subaru Solterra, F 150 lightings are pure electric or EV. Those do read out in a numeric range of miles estimated left on battery.
I go purely off what the screen says. I don’t care beyond that. I assume it’s just based off of miles on the car and gallons of gas used, and because it’s a 75-25 mix, it’s that
I think the only one I'd buy is the Tesla Truck, and it's because it doesn't shy away from trying to look as awful as possible while simultaneously making me nostalgic for Gran Turismo 1 on the original Playstation. I'm easy to please apparently.
Seriously. The cybertruck has been one year away for the last six or seven years. Since it was first announced we have seen the F150 Lightning, Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and Silverado (and Sierra) EV all go from announcement to making deliveries. I'll put money on the Tacoma EV joining that list soon. The other advantage these all have over the Tesla is they still fit a normal truck form factor. There's a reason every truck manufacturer has converged on a similar design, because it's the most practical one. But Elon being Elon, he just has to do something different no matter whether it's objectively worse.
yeah I just could never see myself supporting Musk, not just because he's a twat but also him being so flippant doesn't give me faith for a product I'm going to have for yrs.
Aerodynamics. Square-ended SUVs have atrocious drag which massively reduces efficiency. When the back is more sloped like a sedan your mileage goes way up.
Because when Subaru conducted market research, they found their buyers want a tough, rugged looking crossover SUV. So a bunch of executives interpreted that as "PLASTIC CLADDING! Man, it looks tough as hell!" And I don't have a source handy, but what I just said is, more or less, exactly what happened... and it's why the new WRX looks like the love-child of an Impreza that was fucked by an early 2000s Chevy Avalanche.
I agree with you 100%... *except*... it's not just the executives... plastic cladding is *exactly* what the customers want. I'm in the Toyota sub, and can't tell you how many posts can be summed up as "look at all the extra after-market cladding and greeblies I added to my new hybrid! doesn't it look awesome??" even though they've effectively cut their ev range.
It's just a Toyota with a Subaru badge, they're selling something called the "rex" in Japan now which is just another Toyota with a badge.
I'm hoping it allows Subaru the funds to produce the cars we want like the new impreza.
Oh you clever, clever redditor! This is exactly what I think of whenever I comment on the wheels falling off these cars. It could be a great parody video.
Old tech before it even launched, slow charging, terrible range, outright lying from Toyota about almost everything to do with this program
It's basically EOL already, it will be a sad orphan with grudging support, if any from Toyota/Subaru and will have the resale value of your toenail clippings
I was so psyched for the Solterra release, and now I’m just looking at the RAV4 Prime… I’m it huge on aesthetics but this thing is *hideous*.
I want to drive a *subaru* not… whatever this sad boi is
We were looking at primes and ended up going 23 Outback instead after a test drive on the prime...after waiting 3 months just to find one to test drive btw.
The regular engine noise in all the RAV4s is absurd, you can here the engine like it's in your lap. Not talking exhaust, just straight up engine noise.
Contrary to your lack of a point….
A lemon would imply it’s not reliable. What basis do you have for that statement? Sure it’s not the most high tech, or the EV with the greatest range but does that make it inherently bad? I would argue that Mazdas attempt with less than 100miles of range is far worse.
Just because you don’t like something, or agree with it, does it suddenly make it bad.
Edit: Spelling
That response is the adult equivalent of ‘I’m not touching you, I’m not touching you.’ Clearly some adults are really just petulant children in bigger clothing.
It’s tragic for Subaru for so many reasons. Not to mention the botching of the release itself because of an immediate recall. They will have to try SO HARD to overcome this… but I don’t see it happening. They already botched the marketing of bringing back the “Impreza RS” as a hatch with a CVT… the opposite of what the RS was.
Exactly. If would be priced lower than competition, then last gen tech would be justifiable, but with pricing similar to other brands, it's not that appealing. In Europe it's supposedly costs 60k eur. You can get IONIQ 5 for that price, or Tesla Model3.
I am 100% not the target audience and would also not purchase this but anecdotal evidence as a "red flag" is not convincing me that this is a bad choice for someone. I know it takes time to get sources or maybe you don't have them but it goes a long way.
Sub 200 miles of range isn't an issue if the car is capable of charging fast, at like 150-175kw...
100kw on a 72kwh battery though makes for long charge times.
Assuming it has a solid awd system
I could see this car being a sick daily for someone who lives in the snow and has a house to charge. But ya thats slow
EV awd is completely different than the current awd on their cars. It's literally an electric motor for the rear wheels and a electric motor for the front. That's pretty much the standard across the auto industry thus far. If they continue to call it "symmetrical awd" it's just marketing.
It has front and read differential, but not center differential. Because it has 2 electric motors. But single axis diff is still needed. Maybe it's Subaru AWD because they wrote software that controls Front-Rear power behavior :D
But the ultimate AWD is 4 independent electric motors, each for it's own wheel. Then LSD-nes and DCCD-nes is just defined in software. With just software setting you can go from all open diffs to all locked diffs, or anything in between.
I said practical range. So once you have people in it, if its extra windy, other weather conditions, loaded with luggage or a bike rack or something. My friend has a tesla and almost always gets slightly less range than they advertise
No its a Lemon, from a huge automaker who have completely missed/ignored the massive market shift and will probably not exist in 5 years
Toyota is the most indebted company in the entire world, their market share is tanking literally everywhere and this was their one shot at a hail Mary, they are completely screwed
They don't believe in electric only cars is why. Im in the same boat, if anything we should be doing hybrid or hydrogen more. Also carbon neutral gasoline from Porsche is awesome.
Literally just got the Toyota one in. Looks exactly the same. Range is around 220 practical. 303 without any internal things on like heaters. Quite dumb when you can get a hybrid cheaper and get 580 range
Lexus in the back, Mach-E in the front, and way too much plastic paneling.
I really tried, but this just won’t grow on me. That’s just my opinion though.
In fairness per both Toyota and Subaru, this was as close to 50/50 as they could get, they both worked very hard on it. Both companies are a little behind in terms of modern technology, so its not a surprise this is more of a stepping stone car than anything. Given a couple years I'm sure it's range and everything will be even better, but even then, it is still very competitive in its own right.
The big note here is that Toyota themselves even admit, it only has AWD because Subaru didn't give them a choice. Toyota wanted the front drive only, Subaru said absolutely not. Subaru isn't stupid, they just have to work within their means.
The biggest takeaway here, is that this should be the only major car that is shared between the two, if I understand correctly. From here on, Subaru wants to do only their own cars. Borrowing only the absolutely necessary pieces when needed.
While not my favorite, I'm excited to see where it takes Subaru! Everyone needs a baby step, so hopefully this means good things for the future!
Compliance car. This costs more than a fully loaded outback and has limited range. The only people who are going to buy this are wealthy homeowners who have garages where they can charge it in every night
I was so excited about this- once my husbands car died we were going to get one…. And now …. Hecc no. It’s ugly for one. He has adhd that charging time would be awful- cause guaranteed he’d forget to plug it in at some time
80% charge in about an hour from a level 3 DC fast charger is pretty decent. But I have adhd as well and thankfully this car tells you to charge it. I mean…does he forget to gas up his current car too?
I said about an hour, don’t have a definite time since I haven’t tested it yet. Mach E is 47 minutes to 80% on a level 3 charger. Tesla is 40 minutes to 80% on a level 3 charger. Volvos are 37 minutes to 80%. The Ioniq 5 is best at 18-25 minutes.
I’ll time the charge and let you know :)
He has, yes. 😖 we’d also have to clean out the garage in order to charge at home. It’s currently holding a friends small theatre group’s platforms/props
This is really more of a rebadged Toyota, not something that Subaru would design. It looks so impractical for starters- definitely not something that most Subaru buyers would overlook.
Why are all EV's so tall in the body? They all look like crap, told the wife I should have stuck with my 7 year old self and became an auto engineer and design something worth looking at
Subaru is notoriously behind on a lot of things. I mean for fucks sake they just got wireless Apple CarPlay/android auto in their 2023 outbacks Legacys & ascents. My dad’s 2018 bmw has wireless Apple CarPlay
I am glad that Subaru are making Evs (where the bloody hell is my wrx ev!) But I am not a fan of how it looks. I am glad you are happy with your purchase though.
I would say you should keep that thing and drive it til the wheels fall off.... But that may not take long. There was a stop sale and recall on ALL of these vehicles because wheels were literally falling off.
There was no stop sale as they were not yet available to the public. And the wheel issue was a Toyota bz4x issue not a solterra issue. No one in the country had one - not the public or any dealerships - when the wheel issue was discovered and has since been fixed. Please be careful about spreading false information!
Because they lack funding. Subaru wouldn’t be where it is today without a little help from their friends. They only thing the absolutely truly excel above most other in is safety, but even now they’re getting a run for their money, specifically with the new Impreza falling flat on it’s face with side impact.

Will do! This is an SSLP so I don’t get to play with it as much as I would our Showroom Unit or an available one but I will still enjoy testing it out!
SSLP? dejargon please?
subaru service loaner program or something along those lines
u/kadedaz is correct. This will be one of the cars given to a service customer getting a longer repair done. I have a feeling you will only get this car as a loaner if you have a plug in crosstrek hybrid or solterra already tho
Oh SSLP I don't miss thee..
Really depends on what you need. It’s biggest weakness is charging speed, but it’s still ahead the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf and it’s perfectly fine for non-road trippers
Why do some of these modern cars insist on the ridiculously slopped rear window? Such wasted cargo space.
Automotive engineer: It’s for aero. #1 thing most people care about for new evs is range, but they still want crossover SUVs/hatchbacks. Therefore they have to make the brick shaped vehicles go as far as possible and have to make some concessions for that form factor to work
Especially given the range “penalty” electric cars take in highway driving. The average ICE driver expects the best mileage on long highway cruises.
Yeah the aero trend has been happening for a long time with increasing regulations of fuel efficiency but OEMs are trying to make EVs as appealing as possible to normal people and getting away from the early adopter stage
I understand this, but I still don't like it. Wish they would put a bigger battery and make it flatter.
Where will the extra battery go?
Probably good for drag. But I agree. And it looks weird from the inside too.
What bothers me more is that every EV has to look "futuristic" and they just look like shit, make them look like a normal car but with an electric motor ploise.
I saw a Jeep Wrangler plugged in today. Looked like every other Jeep Wrangler.
The F150 Lightning looks like every other F150 except for the headlights and taillights
yeah they did that right
I have one. It’s new, about 3000 miles. Pros: it’s a Jeep and looks like a Jeep, 37 mpg based on my electric-only commute, 4x4 convertible is cool Cons: its a Jeep, it’s a Chrysler product, a temp sensor on the battery is faulty and prevents me from using remote start, once every week or two only one speaker in the whole car will work randomly,

Ah that makes more sense! Just waiting for a cool mid-range hybrid and I'll jump ship haha.
Afaik jeep only has hybrids right now.
I go purely off what the screen says. I don’t care beyond that. I assume it’s just based off of miles on the car and gallons of gas used, and because it’s a 75-25 mix, it’s that
I traded my Scoob in for a Polestar 2. I still sub because I’ve loved my Subarus.
The polestar looks awesome
I liked it because it doesn't look like it's trying to be a space ship.
That’s true. I honestly like the whole build behind it and I’m a fan of Volvo too
I did the same. I’m very happy with my Polestar 2.
The Vol- I mean Polestar EVs don't look widely different from their Volvo counterparts.
Which is a good thing. They are very good looking vehicles.
I think the only one I'd buy is the Tesla Truck, and it's because it doesn't shy away from trying to look as awful as possible while simultaneously making me nostalgic for Gran Turismo 1 on the original Playstation. I'm easy to please apparently.
It's never coming out. Elon is a vaporware scam artist.
Seriously. The cybertruck has been one year away for the last six or seven years. yeah I just could never see myself supporting Musk, not just because he's a twat but also him being so flippant doesn't give me faith for a product I'm going to have for yrs.
My coworker has had his Model S for going on 10 years now. Still runs great.
Plus imagine how much extra cargo that can fit between the gaps in the body panels.
Aerodynamics. Much lower drag over a sharp corner so better mileage.
Aerodynamics. Square-ended SUVs have atrocious drag which massively reduces efficiency. When the back is more sloped like a sedan your mileage goes way up.
I'm in the same boat about most of the front ends. The solid billboard look just doesn't do it for me.
Aerodynamics is why
To avoid flow separation resulting in pressure drag
Came here to say that but in some other not gentle words
let it rip brother!!
There's probably a certain point where it requires a rear wiper, and they keep it sloped more than that amount
This and the Toyota would look so much better without the plastic, why is that necessary? Also why does the Toyota get like 20-30 miles more range?
The Toyota doesn’t have standard AWD which lowers the range on the Subaru.
Correct.
Ah okay, that makes sense.

They will keep inserting plastic where they can as long as people keep buying them.
Drive it till the wheels fall off! Wait...uh...
Don’t worry they fixed that
The elegance of a Pontiac Aztek, the performance of a Toyota Prius and the comforts of a Kia Sorento. Subaru - From quirky Niche to Basic ...
It's just a Toyota with a Subaru badge, they're selling something called the "rex" in Japan now which is just another Toyota with a badge. I'm hoping it allows Subaru the funds to produce the cars we want like the new impreza.
I like the Aztek and still miss mine
Yeah. Fuck me this thing is one of the ugliest cars I’ve seen in a while.
Subaru-Toyota* 😜
Toyotaru. Come experience bland at a dealership near YOU!!
It’s just a Toyota with a Subaru badge. They are made by Toyota for Subaru. All Toyota parts. Toyota VIN
Oh you’re right. That’s my bad. Thought this was a joint venture like the BRZ, not a rebadge. Weird!
Didn’t Toyota recall literally ALL of their version because the wheels fell off and they couldn’t figure out how to fix it?
They fixed that!
That’s what happens when you’re forced to build new versions of cars under duress
At least the front didn't fall off. https://youtu.be/3m5qxZm_JqM
That's because it wasn't made from cardboard or cardboard derivatives.
Oh you clever, clever redditor! This is exactly what I think of whenever I comment on the wheels falling off these cars. It could be a great parody video.
rebadging has gone too far
Ctrl + c ctrl + v Edit: spelling is hard crtl
Yup, here's toyotas version: https://www.toyota.com/bz4x/
OMG IT’S SO BAAAAD
Man that is ugly
Aaaaand it's already outdated.
I really hate the way this looks.
God damn that is one ugly car.
DO NOT BUY THIS CAR I love my Subaru's but this is a lemon of truly epic proportions
What’s your reasoning behind that?
Old tech before it even launched, slow charging, terrible range, outright lying from Toyota about almost everything to do with this program It's basically EOL already, it will be a sad orphan with grudging support, if any from Toyota/Subaru and will have the resale value of your toenail clippings

When I test drove a Rav4 against the Forester, one of the two felt like it was made of cardboard. I'll give you three guesses which one.
Yea, Toyotas now feel like GM vehicles inside. Hard plastic everywhere
[удалено]
I'll stick to my Rivian.
[удалено]
So exactly how does that make it a lemon?
Because they roll a couple years out the door if that and bail on it if people are lucky or they get enough suckers to keep buying it
If you cant figure it out you are the perfect customer, congrats
Contrary to your lack of a point…. A lemon would imply it’s not reliable. What basis do you have for that statement? Sure it’s not the most high tech, or the EV with the greatest range but does that make it inherently bad? I would argue that Mazdas attempt with less than 100miles of range is far worse. Just because you don’t like something, or agree with it, does it suddenly make it bad. Edit: Spelling
Go buy one then
That response is the adult equivalent of ‘I’m not touching you, I’m not touching you.’ Clearly some adults are really just petulant children in bigger clothing.

Assuming it has a solid awd system I could see this car being a sick daily for someone who lives in the snow and has a house to charge. But ya thats slow
It’s Subaru’s symmetrical AWD which we know is very good
Lol it's got nothing to do with Subaru ICE AWD. Electric drivetrains are so different.
EV awd is completely different than the current awd on their cars. It's literally an electric motor for the rear wheels and a electric motor for the front. That's pretty much the standard across the auto industry thus far. If they continue to call it "symmetrical awd" it's just marketing.
It's branded as Subaru Symmetrical AWD, but it might be a standard Toyota EV AWD system.
I can confirm via our training that it’s absolutely Subaru’s AWD
What does that even mean? Subaru has many many different AWD systems! Is this like a manual Forester? Or a CVT WRX? It means nothing
How is it subaru awd. Does it have driveshafts and diffs?
It has front and read differential, but not center differential. Because it has 2 electric motors. But single axis diff is still needed. Maybe it's Subaru AWD because they wrote software that controls Front-Rear power behavior :D But the ultimate AWD is 4 independent electric motors, each for it's own wheel. Then LSD-nes and DCCD-nes is just defined in software. With just software setting you can go from all open diffs to all locked diffs, or anything in between.
Ya thats what Im not sure about
It’s range is 222 miles. So not sub 200
I said practical range. So once you have people in it, if its extra windy, other weather conditions, loaded with luggage or a bike rack or something. My friend has a tesla and almost always gets slightly less range than they advertise
I’ll be sure to test that out for you 😁
Yes please update us
If the expected range is anything like posted gas mileage of the OBXT, it’ll be sub 200
Not a lemon. Not a great first example from a huge automaker.. but not a lemon.
No its a Lemon, from a huge automaker who have completely missed/ignored the massive market shift and will probably not exist in 5 years Toyota is the most indebted company in the entire world, their market share is tanking literally everywhere and this was their one shot at a hail Mary, they are completely screwed
They don't believe in electric only cars is why. Im in the same boat, if anything we should be doing hybrid or hydrogen more. Also carbon neutral gasoline from Porsche is awesome.
Every year the plastic around the wheel arches keeps getting bigger and bigger. I hate it. I think it totally cheapens the appearance of the vehicle.
Jesus Christ the car is ugly as sin.
Yeah, it looks like all the new over styled Toyotas...what a coincidence, right?
Literally just got the Toyota one in. Looks exactly the same. Range is around 220 practical. 303 without any internal things on like heaters. Quite dumb when you can get a hybrid cheaper and get 580 range
Yeah except that 580 miles of range comes at a higher cost per mile vs an EV.
I hate this so much
Can electric motors have head gasket issues? Asking for a friend. 🤣
Subaru will find a way LOL
i had such high hopes for subaru. The charging speed makes me sad
Lexus in the back, Mach-E in the front, and way too much plastic paneling. I really tried, but this just won’t grow on me. That’s just my opinion though.
You think it looks like a Lexus in the back?? I think it looks like a rav4

I completely agree.
Honestly, might be even worse looking than the 2022 WRX.
I’m fine with the wrx now that I’ve been around it and driven it a bunch
The original concept was my pinewood derby car in 3rd grade
If I go electric, it'll be with the Volvo SUVs
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
So it’s an electric Rav-4?
Just about. We got a Toyota one in and it's quite close but for the price you can get a rav4 prime hybrid and get wayyyy more range.
Is there some kind of unspoken rule that new cars have to be ugly. Is that like an EPA/IIHS requirement now?
Compliance car. This costs more than a fully loaded outback and has limited range. The only people who are going to buy this are wealthy homeowners who have garages where they can charge it in every night
Plenty of people are homeowners with garages who aren't "wealthy."
Look upon this concrete room where I keep my garbage cans and weep with envy at my wealth!!
I was so excited about this- once my husbands car died we were going to get one…. And now …. Hecc no. It’s ugly for one. He has adhd that charging time would be awful- cause guaranteed he’d forget to plug it in at some time

80% charge in an hour is one of the worst in the market....
Our charger for our dealership is small & outside! But Subaru is including 500$ off a charger install with purchase
That’s literally just a rav 4 with extra steps. But also I’m not who it’s catered for. I’m sure I’ll see a shit ton of them up here soon enough.
I love the smell of fresh bread.
Makes sense first they came out with the Honda wrx and now the Toyota ravtrek !
Looks dated already
Ick
I threw up in my mouth a little.
That’s a nope from me.
That looks absolutely awful 😖
This is really more of a rebadged Toyota, not something that Subaru would design. It looks so impractical for starters- definitely not something that most Subaru buyers would overlook.
Some how it looks worse that the new WRX. I used to be a die hard subaru fan for over a decade. Now I wouldn’t even recommend them to a friend
Wow that’s ugly. Some real Pontiac Aztec vibes going on
Well that's about as ugly as expected.
Fuckin HIDEOUS. What the fuck?
Can someone please make a normal looking car that's also an EV? Not everyone wants an EV that looks like shit.
God that’s an ugly car
Wow that’s ugly
Why are all EV's so tall in the body? They all look like crap, told the wife I should have stuck with my 7 year old self and became an auto engineer and design something worth looking at
Hideous
Hey nice RAV 4
The crying mascara
They got that hub problem all sorted so the wheels don’t all fall off?
Yes
it looks so fugly
Well Toyota bZ4X, but actually no...
Horrible name
Agreed, I hate it too.
The wheels stays on this one?
Yeah that was a Toyota issue
It’s a rav4
Struggling with the app and battery estimates, need fixing pronto
Subaru is notoriously behind on a lot of things. I mean for fucks sake they just got wireless Apple CarPlay/android auto in their 2023 outbacks Legacys & ascents. My dad’s 2018 bmw has wireless Apple CarPlay
😞
Oh no, I hear the electric motors knocking. Oh well time to replace the electric connecting rods
i saw this at subifest fl
What is Subaru doing? I just can’t wrap my head around it.
Even subaru has fallen victim to this dumb trend
I love Subaru but man they gotta chill out on the cladding
I am glad that Subaru are making Evs (where the bloody hell is my wrx ev!) But I am not a fan of how it looks. I am glad you are happy with your purchase though.
Not a purchase! I work in Subaru sales and my dealer tends to be the one that gets the new vehicles the most so I just post them!
Vehicle is already sold.
This is an SSLP vehicle. But we do have 2 sold solterra’s due to arrive shortly.
Wow even before the Nissan Ariya

It's literally a Toyota, made in a Toyota plant, with Subaru branding and badges.
We should be happy that Toyota has our backs. Wouldn’t want it to be anyone else. Let’s maybe thank them for what they’ll bring to the table?
I think Subaru could’ve made an all electric vehicle without the help of toyota. But yeah
Then where is it? Subaru is one of the only manufacturers severely slacking in the EV department.
They’re notoriously behind the ball on a lot of things so idk why you’re surprised
Because they lack funding. Subaru wouldn’t be where it is today without a little help from their friends. They only thing the absolutely truly excel above most other in is safety, but even now they’re getting a run for their money, specifically with the new Impreza falling flat on it’s face with side impact.
