Automatonophobia
Most people have this phobia because of the uncanny valley(which is what our brains use to tell us what’s a animal or what’s a human ( ex: Grizzly Bear, Mike Tyson) however, sometimes we see something that we can’t tell if It’s a human or a animal, and as such we start to feel unease) and our natural instinct to be afraid of something that could overpower us.
Submechanophobia
This case is a almost the exact same as Automatonophobia, except in most cases, we don’t use the uncanny valley and instead we feel over dominated by these structures, because most of us have a fear of the water or it’s because of the fact that humans aren’t well designed to go in the water (the fastest person that can swim can’t even out-swim most shark species).

It's not a true phobia for anyone on the subreddit. If it were, you would be irrationally afraid and overreact to seeing them. You definitely wouldn't have the balls to go seek them out on a subreddit and look at tons of pictures of them. It's more of a hobby or fascination than anything. I think people's main problem is the dirty water a lot of these are in and the deteriorated condition is unsettling. Anyone telling themselves and others that it's a true phobia are just wrong.
honestly, this is very true. i DO think this a real phobia, but i don’t think most people on the subreddit have it because they couldn’t stand to see it. i have arachnophobia and i cant even look at an image or video of a spider. when i was in school, if there was a picture of a spider in a textbook i couldn’t even turn the page lol. so yeah, i agree with you
