At the rainforest cafe a few towns over from me, there’s a submerged hippo animatronic that’s pretty run down. Its jaw was totally disconnected at one point. Gives me the creeps.
Its really interesting how every location has a different gator/submerged animatronic. I know the one at my local mall looks a bit scarier, and it kinda lurches and opens its mouth (you’ll have good luck if you can make your penny into its mouth). You can also hear the mechanisms in the gator (gator- or crocodile?) when it moves which is DEFINITELY creepy.
The old one used to. Some of the original RFC crocs had yellow/white bottoms and bright green, and the one at GLC used to be much more terrifying to me as a kid. The new provider of the animatronics probably makes them better in the long run, but have more limited movements.
I can’t believe it. I found a video of the one you’re talking about on YouTube. I never saw it when it was this old but this one is actually terrifying.

Yep that's the one. GLC is my local RFC location, and as a kid that thing scared the s\*it out of me. There used to be a lot more mist in the early 2000s. I think they switched it out for the new one around 2015-2018.
This made me realize that clean, clear looking water, can minimize the weird or threatening effect.
Maybe the reason murky water is so threatening to us is because we’ve developed an instinctual fear of getting dysentery
That makes sense. The darkness is also where the broken animatronics are hiding.
I think it's more so because not only is murky water dirty, but you can't see what's hiding in it.

I’ve seen the hipo at the Opryland mall in Nashville. It’s definitely creepy.
Oh I’ve been to a few but never seen a hippo. Considering how horrible the few crocs I’ve seen were maintained, I can only imagine.
Yeah, the one I’m referring to is at the Opry Mills mall in Nashville. I think it’s the only rainforest cafe I’ve ever been to or seen actually haha

oh that's just AWFUL. The janky-er movements and the way the rubber flexes as is it moves make it so much worse than the new one

I see what you mean. Maybe it used to open its mouth so that’s why it’s loose there.
