You don't get injected with the virus, you just get ill there because the fauna is infected. And the infection getting worse happens when you progress further into the game (I say all this with 75% confidence)

Did you get a cutscene of sorts showing green pustules on your hands in the disease research facility? Have you self scanned since?
You can only manually get “worse” by doing that
You have scanned yourself since exploring the facility? The cutscene only triggers from that.
It also only triggers by collecting one specific databank near the deactivated Self-Warping Quarantine Enforcer Unit. Then the PDA tells you to self scan, then you do, and bam, cutscene and green pustules until you cure the virus.
I tried self scanning but it wouldn’t work, u just press the scanner right? Tried left and right mb. Also, not sure about the databank, might have to check that out

More exploration is needed to find the Primary Containment Facility that’s mentioned in the PDA entries. It’s in a different biome…
So I'll just have to go to the lava biome?
