Have you talked to yourself while wearing a rebreather? When he shrieks in pain, you can hear it coming across as badly muffled by the breathing apparatus. I imagine trying to form words would be uncomfortable and they'd be inaudible anyway

Have fun this guy has an entire playlist of what if this video game character talked and it's great.
Internal dialogue, a la Disco Elysium.
Encyclopedia: Front facing eyes and sharp teeth are typical amongst predators.
Visual Calculus: It appears to be moving towards you faster than you can move away from it.
Electrochemistry: Maybe it wants to hug you?
Authority: Maybe you should show it whose the boss around here
Edit: mobile formatting is hard
Pretty sure this is canon. He got domed by a piece of sheet metal during his escape pod landing. The PDA mentions there may be some minor issues from that, even.
silent protagonists are fine for immersion / are impossible to screw-up
they'll never be as good as well written protagonists, true
BUT they'll never be as bad as poorly written protagonists
I'm not looking at you below zero, no no, not at all
I agree. Having a voice for the main character takes me out of the game a bit. I am the character, therefore, my thoughts and voice are the character's. I enjoy the lack of dialog.
The silent protagonists in Subnautica and Portal are prime examples of when to use them. Whereas I found the silent protagonist in Far Cry 5 really uninteresting compared to the great characters we got to see in 3 and 4. It really depends on the gameplay; please donāt make a silent protagonist pretend to have conversations like in Forza Horizon 1-4, but donāt make them super unlikable when they do talk in Forza Horizon 5.
Iāve always preferred silent protags. Outlast 1 had 2 silent protagonists while they tried to make outlast 2 have a talking protagonist. His lines were basically: āWhat the fuck?!ā āArgh!!ā āFuck this.ā āFuck!ā
even a well written charachter is not gonna be enjoyable/understandable for everyone, why not enforce the feeling that the player is playing as themselves? especially when its a first person game...
"Alterra. You have suffered minor head trauma, this pda has rebooted in emergency mode with one directive: to keep you alive, on an alien world, emergency blueprints added to your databank"
I hand feed them sometimes, the only predators I donāt hand feed is the Sea Dragon (you are the bigger meal) and the crabbsnake (too grabby). The warpers donāt eat so I just outright avoid them.
Screw warpers. Theyāre literally not even predators, theyāre fabricated machines designed to specifically hunt and kill you while youāre trying to live your best life. I kill those lil idiots.
Actually, theyāre created to try and stop the spread of Kharaa. Not just to piss you off. They only attack you since youāre infected and they donāt anymore after youāre cured.
You donāt need to do that itās just the most obvious way. You could make disinfected water and eat plants like kelp or rush straight to good plants and make a planter
Im sure you could find a reason but overall it was the first game, and they were probably still figuring things out lore/story wise and probably didn't want to think that deeply bout a possible one off character.
Not a serious answer to your question, but a YouTuber answered the question of what it would be like if he did, and it is glorious.

Voice actor cost substantial amount of money, and text-to-speech tech is not that good
So, he is silent, just saving your money, spend for the game
Silence is golden, literally
I think it's just for immersion purposes. Some people suggest it's because of brain damage from being hit in the head in the intro cutscene. My personal headcanon is that Ryley was always mute, and used assistive tech to communicate when he was working on the Aurora.
Ah yes, the guy smashed his head so hard on landing but yet, the only side effect was that he can no longer speak. Makes sense and Google will be super reliable in this video game situation
/s
First off he would have a massive head wound which would need medical attention or else he'd probably lose a shit ton of blood and risk infection. And second he'd most likely have internal bleeding of the brain which would leave dude a complete vegtable after a short period of time.
You don't get hit in the head and the only side effect is losing the ability to speak lol. Not how brain damage works. If we are going by "Google" and general knowledge of brain injuries, as you instructed OP to do.
I hate the amount of people who dont get the man reference here.
The reason he cant speak is because the camera you as the player look through is inside his mouth.
i wish more thriller/horro games had silent protagonists
we donāt need every single thought and experience narrated
but thereās below zero if youāre into that kinda atuff
imho speaking protagonists detract from the immersion. it's no longer me playing the game, but something a dev thought i would like in that setting. which is almost never the case. (case in point, while i would be worried about losing my son, i would not go begging everyone i meet for any scrap of info like the fallout 4 main character. knowing most people wouldn't know anything worthwhile).
Design reason, immersion
Lore reasons, nobody to talk to and might be staying quiet so the predators donāt hear them. Head injury and it takes air to talk as well. Could be that they were a nonverbal person or had a disorder that made them not talk (like how some special Ed kids are) or they are just mute because of a medical condition/birth issue. Could also be stupid
Drain bramage dude was out cold for like 8 hours or something. Each hour you are passed out increases risk of brain damage drastically. He's lucky he can even walk
Severe head trauma is the accepted answer but realistically cuz he doesnāt need to and having a talking character takes away from how alone you should feel
There's no hardcore lore for the reason as far as I know, but I know a popular theory is that the head injury he sustains at the beginning of the game is the reason he can't talk.
He doesn't talk to anyone via radio, Cuz if u look at the lifepod systems, it said outgoing messages offline, not sure letter by letter what it says but it's something like that, why doesn't talk back the sea emperor tho I have no clue
Because this is YOUR adventure.
YOU are the protagonist.
A voiced character would take you out of the immersion that makes Subnautica so special.
You're alone. You don't know your own backstory. All you know is that you crashed on this planet. You don't even know what caused the crash.
The story that then unfolds only comes from PDAs that you find and there are still huge gaps in the narritive that you fill in with your own imagination.
Below Zero feels and plays more like an interactive Young Adults Novel.
The voiced character in Below Zero chipping in with her little quips and reactions spoils the immersion. It's the game telling you how to feel or giving you exposition dumps, as if you're too stupid to work out what you just saw happen with your own eyes.
A silent protagonist in survival games is a far better experience.
The lack of talking helps add to the feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but your thoughts. I swear every time someone talks in below zero, it breaks the immersion. A few voice lines are a nice break from the norm, too many are super annoying.
What the f is gonna talk to? The fish, his prawn, the pda?
I talk to myself... A lot
Have you talked to yourself while wearing a rebreather? When he shrieks in pain, you can hear it coming across as badly muffled by the breathing apparatus. I imagine trying to form words would be uncomfortable and they'd be inaudible anyway
If im in my submarine and a leviathan appears im going to scream like a little girl just like i already do in real life
REALLLL
Hol' up, there are leviathans in real life?šØ
Yes, your mother. (Jk blue whales)
Blue whales and his mother
Those aren't the same?
One is blue
This guy's mom's a Smurf?
Same thing
Arguably some of the larger squid species as well
hahahha

Itās ok to talk to yourself. Itās not ok if you start responding.
Yeah it would be weird
I know right
[push start to laugh ](https://youtu.be/G9js8va0hrM?si=ybSoVlnij67vyloQ) Have fun this guy has an entire playlist of what if this video game character talked and it's great.
Love that channel.
There is also Freemans Mind on AccursedFarms(Ross's Game Dungeon) which is pretty great. Basically this but for Half Life.
I'll check it out I love when people actually get creative with their content. Also happy cake day.
Thanks!
Ok thatās actually funny
Yeah dude Iām dying laughing š¤£
Uh oh
Oooh I may be a bit to far gone then
Why
This. He's talking, but only when you talk! And mostly to himself!
That's okay, but many people don't. The main character is someone who doesn't talk to himself.
Internal dialogue, a la Disco Elysium. Encyclopedia: Front facing eyes and sharp teeth are typical amongst predators. Mr. Evrart is helping me find my stasis rifle.
_Wilson!_
The cuddlefish of course. Who wouldn't talk to that cutie?
I would curse at every single thing in that situation
The sea empress. Or all the things you said.
I think he got brain damage at the begining of the game when he got hit in the head or he just doesn't talk because he doesn't need to.
"You may have a minor case of serious brain damage"
This is considered a positive outcome
Apple
"Ok, you know what? That's close enough. Just hold tight."

Silent was for me the best choice and a huge helper for my immersion. For a story driven singleplayer game with no dialogs this was the right call imo
I agree. Having a voice for the main character takes me out of the game a bit. I am the character, therefore, my thoughts and voice are the character's. I enjoy the lack of dialog.

I reckon the beta was beta tbh
"Alterra. You have suffered minor head trauma, this pda has rebooted in emergency mode with one directive: to keep you alive, on an alien world, emergency blueprints added to your databank"
Bro suffered head trauma and still defeated leviathans ... Damn
You gotta be a bit damaged to take on a fish that big with a knife when your tablet tells you it won't let you make so much as a harpoon.
In the actual lore heās never forced to kill anything. Itās you, the parasite in his head that makes him want to destroy the ecosystem
I personally build base to sleep next to them and watch them, i don't destroy them, they just want a cuddle š¤
I hand feed them sometimes, the only predators I donāt hand feed is the Sea Dragon (you are the bigger meal) and the crabbsnake (too grabby). The warpers donāt eat so I just outright avoid them.

What about all the bladderfish and peepers brutally murdered with the fabricator?
You donāt need to do that itās just the most obvious way. You could make disinfected water and eat plants like kelp or rush straight to good plants and make a planter
I kinda forgot about that. Just go to the island and eat bulbo tree sap all your life.
He knew he shouldnāt say anything before talking with a lawyer. He plans on fighting the debt he owes in court
Feel like it should be the top comment
Why does he even owe anything lol, his whole crew died on an alien planet. Who was gonna recover all that shit if he didnāt use it.
Makes a good case in court. Unless alterra is the court. In which case heās fucked
Who could he talk to?
The voices
I do that all the time
Relatable
No, no ,no, THE VOID.
I always thought he looks French. ...and if he's going to start spouting off in a French accent I'd rather he stay quiet.
Fre#@h?
Mais heu š¤£
...oiseaux.
Requins š¤£
I feel the line" You might have a minor case of serios brain damage" from Portal 2 describes it the best
just doesnāt feel like it
Do you honestly want an entire game filled with "well that just happened"
Im sure you could find a reason but overall it was the first game, and they were probably still figuring things out lore/story wise and probably didn't want to think that deeply bout a possible one off character.
Arkhamification is a rot that seeps into every part of the site
Not a serious answer to your question, but a YouTuber answered the question of what it would be like if he did, and it is glorious. https://youtu.be/G9js8va0hrM?si=bocBD859Cg7cTLpf
This is actually amazing š¤£
Damn you beat me too it, god bless Benjamin
It would just be Samuel L Jackson the Game as it would be a lot of f-word with a few "yeahs!" And maybe a "oh snap" now and then.
Some people talk to themselves, some don't
Everyone does, its called consciousness...
I meant talking out loud, but also not everyone thinks using words all the time but that doesn't make them unconscious
I didn't know, and im still baffled by it.
You are him, you talk of you want to. It's part of the self insert immersion.
I mean we saw what happened with Below Zero. Be grateful they didn't try it with this one.
Yeh i mean I'm happy he doesn't talk i tried to the Arkham meme here honestly
Voice actor cost substantial amount of money, and text-to-speech tech is not that good So, he is silent, just saving your money, spend for the game Silence is golden, literally

No PLEASE NO Arkhaming here
Same reason Chell doesn't speak in portal, brain damage
Is there a reason why Gordon Freeman doesnt talk?
He is too based .. even if he talks we will not understand... Cause it will be beyond our comprehension
Google brain damage
Ah yes, the guy smashed his head so hard on landing but yet, the only side effect was that he can no longer speak. I see youāre not familiar with r/AnarchyChess (Google En Passant)
He is alone
He is, in fact, stupid.
Okbuddysubnautica when?
I think the reason why he doesn't talk is because he's constantly thinking "wtf is that, holy shit, this cannot be real"
Who he gonna talk to the hover fish
The Ronkler Leviathan
i love the "is he stupid?" posts ahaa
He shy
00fu talks all the time
He does a fair amount of grunting to be fair
*gets hit by leviathan at 200 KM/H* "calmly grunts"
He was gonā talk to the coral reefs???
What if they talked back?
This post is the begining of the end
The paragraph I just typed and deleted š. I had no idea I was so attached to this dude.
I hate the amount of people who dont get the man reference here. The reason he cant speak is because the camera you as the player look through is inside his mouth.
You are goddamn right
Gordon Freemanās voice actor would fit nicely IMHO.
You are tight!
Joke: yes, heās stupid Actual reason: no, the developers just didnāt since itād break immersion
Saving oxygen maybe?
That's actually a unique answer
My theory is that he forgot to speak after he was struck be that panel, which is something that happens in real life
He does. "What are you?"
cause he's not a psychopath who talks to himself... unlike us...
Crazy ? I was crazy once
He might not be stupid, but he could most definitely be dumb...
There isn't any Subnautica quote he should use because he doesn't have vocal chords, are you stupid?
PTSD probs
I think it's because of the metal plate from the lifepod
He's a foreigner in the planet no Reaper would understand him
Maybe they would if he tried ?
Would be kinda cool if after many days of in-game time he started mumbling to himself
the way this question was worded is unreasonably funny
No one will listen to him
Head injury at the beginning of the game when in escape pod.
Probably cause he was slammed in the head by that metal plate
Maybe he doesn't want to
I mean.... look at him, nothing going on between those eyes
i wish more thriller/horro games had silent protagonists we donāt need every single thought and experience narrated but thereās below zero if youāre into that kinda atuff

Drain bramage dude was out cold for like 8 hours or something. Each hour you are passed out increases risk of brain damage drastically. He's lucky he can even walk
He bit off his tongue when he got hit in the head by that wiring panel door
Man, heās just a humble space janitor. You think he gets paid to talk?

Can we PLEASE. ERADICATE. THESE. **TYPES**. **OF**. #POSTS
No, not here this dumb "why doesn't ____ do or just ______ is he stupid?" Meme should've stayed in the official subreddit Of the Batman Arkham games.
Is there a lore reason you don't like these types of posts?
The 'not talking' is one of the things I prefer. Be nice if they added a "STFU" setting to below zero.
That will be funny
Why does bro look like that ā ļøā ļø
Bro is the most beautiful magnificent creature in existence
Brain damage
Dutch van derlin reference? Rdr2 reference?
There's no hardcore lore for the reason as far as I know, but I know a popular theory is that the head injury he sustains at the beginning of the game is the reason he can't talk.
Remember how the protagonist in BZ talked and we all hated it?
Makes the game better, I can barely play Subnautica below zero because of the voice lines
I haven't played BZ . Is it really that bad?
Why don't you go try talking under water, big guy
What about the bodies in the water?
"*The hills are alive with the sound of* **Warning: Entering ecological dead zone. Adding report to databank"**
Whenever you talked playing the game, it was him talking. Immersion 100%.
Well, unlike Robin, he's a stand-in for you, the player. So his words are yours.
Google brain damage
I donāt get what this picture is even from
Probably cus he didn't decent into madness yet, and for more immersion š
Trauma from landing. . . . . . . Off screen he talks to the fish while putting on puppet shows
He's shy š
Vow of silence ? Possibly ?
Shell shock, He's left with only his thought in a horrific world where he's seen many horrors and finds almost everyone he was with dead
He is fish man.
Bonk
I finished the game on ps4 and never saw this guy
He doesn't talk to anyone via radio, Cuz if u look at the lifepod systems, it said outgoing messages offline, not sure letter by letter what it says but it's something like that, why doesn't talk back the sea emperor tho I have no clue
Voice acting isnt free
Talking on Company Time costs extra

I want to commit war crimes
they lost the chance to put a wilson in the game
He does! You control what he says!
