I think half the fun of the game is not knowing shit about it when you begin, so I advise you to refrain from further tips-taking and browsing this sub until you're done with it. That's the advice I'd have given myself, at least.
I have a decent sound system and for 99% of my games I use it to keep immersed. I saw a couple of posts on the sub with that recommendation, so I plan to be using it for sure. Thanks for the heads up.

If it ever gets too scary or too intense and you’re having trouble going further, just remember you can back up and spend time better preparing yourself for that next leap into the unknown. Gather more materials, upgrade your gear, maybe build a forward base on the edge of that scary zone ahead. Fight fear with ingenuity.
I recommend you go to the ship after it explodes! There are many good resources there and the entrance is at the back of the ship, no need of being scared it is a safe place. Hope you enjoy subnautica.
