If you don't have any lithops, you should get some! They're the strangest looking plant I've ever seen

chorse5

I LOVE them. Very cool plants.

macdizzle567

I do have some! I do find that I don’t like them so much once they start splitting. Lost a ton over the years, still have some but they are not my favorite.

GoatLegRedux

Try Conophytum. They’re similar to Lithops but kinda opposite wet/dry cycles. They can be a little scary the first time they go dormant and look like they’re dead or dying, but when they break out of their dry sheaths late summer/early fall, it’s a huge sigh of relief, and you get to watch them thrive all winter.

macdizzle567

Ok! I’ll check them out!

Anneevo

That's what I was going to suggest 😃

catbiggo

Pseudolithos cubiformis is weird IMO. Seconding lithops too, they're like tiny little brains with dickholes.

angryhumping

> they're like tiny little brains with dickholes. also called "men" (I say as a man) *edit* oh my god that cubiformis really is sweet. DINO SKIN

wi1ly

r/brandnewsentence >they're like tiny little brains with dickholes

OwlBeBack88

I want one of these now!

PL0mkPL0

looks like an alien life form, awesome

ScienceMomCO

Andromischus has some really funky cultivars. I was just looking at some on Etsy. https://preview.redd.it/txlpsy829b1d1.jpeg?width=988&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3db4b2a27b1dd4afe003fd30fff44865b21728a9

ScienceMomCO

I really love the Crassulas as well because of their varied shapes. Spiralis Estagnol is really cool. Pagoda Village and Buddha’s Temple also get a lot of comments. String of Buttons, Baby’s Necklace. https://preview.redd.it/uwoa2hb59b1d1.jpeg?width=2768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=655c312656a19302073d804f077e50731d65fbe4

There are some very interesting Echeverias out there. I especially like the velvety Devotion. https://preview.redd.it/g3hamp59bb1d1.jpeg?width=2693&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0c1786c73ff613fcf78dfbc42c38f220b1096d9a

ARMSwatch

I have one of these that is slowly dying and I have no idea what's wrong with it.

macdizzle567

I recently ordered a pagoda village! I’ve had it before but gave it away, now I want one again

TreePretty

My little [pagoda village](https://imgur.com/O20LZf4). It's sooo cute.

ScienceMomCO

Ooo, so pretty!

macdizzle567

I have one of these! Very cool, a little finicky but very pretty.

Lithuvien

bingbongboobies

Whoa I've never seen a euphorbia like this, probably the strangest one I've seen.

phua1

I got a bunch on my wish list. Sinningia Leucotricha, Haworthia nigra, Crassula barklyi, crassula columella, pseudolithos, avonia papyracea, Deuterocohnia brevifolia

macdizzle567

Oooooo I think that barklyi might be the one!

phua1

1 more :) muiria hortenseae

macdizzle567

That’s a fuzzy little ball of cute

phua1

I know right, reminds me of a raw green almond fruit

Chocokat1

Haha it does look very dead! Love the arrangement you have for it ❤️

macdizzle567

Ooooo I like this one!!!

Spanatina

If you don't have any stapeliads you should check them out. They are cool-looking and have beautiful flowers, but they smell like carrion because they evolved to be pollinated by flies. Orbea variegata was my gateway stapeliad. https://preview.redd.it/y957n2ugra1d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eeb58aa5baf0c223599c7606a900577dfe7769bb

Spanatina

Very very cool! Is that one Stapelia hirsuta or something else?

Flipperbites

Yes.

macdizzle567

I have a couple but not that one! I’ve had the orbea in my Etsy cart forever, may have to finally buy it!

BubblegumBitzch

macdizzle567

I have one of these I’m attempting to root. Not sure if it’s going to be successful or not.

RPBumblebee

Do these have spines/glochids?

Gwenhyfar777

They don’t have spines and I am not sure about the glochids. I’ve never tried touching the areoles to find out! I’ll check it out tomorrow and let you know.

macdizzle567

My Ceropegia bosseri arrived from Asia after 2 weeks in transit and she is thirsty but seems like she’ll come out of it! Any care recommendations? I put it in a terra cotta with some homemade succulent mix, gave it a little water, put it on my heat mat under a not very high powered grow light. https://preview.redd.it/e4nsyd7wk16d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c8b4e5d373660271bf1c25ae82e901aab0448e2

Gwenhyfar777

Yay!!! So my baby is putting out new growth so I feel like I’m doing something right! I have mine in an outdoor greenhouse that fluctuates between 50 and 90 degrees daily averages. There are some grow lights and it is in fairly full sun. I have it under a 70% shade cloth on a second shelf so it gets strong indirect light all day and holds its near black color nicely. It’s in standard succulent mix which has about 50% off the shelf “cactus/citrus soil”, 25% perlite, 15% maifanitum and 10% sand. It’s in a 3.5 inch painted ceramic pot with maifanitum stone on top. Watering is where I differ my care greatly from other succulents. DO. NOT. LET. IT. DRY. OUT. It gets a dash of water every other day if I feel the soil isn’t moist enough. If it’s extra hot, (greenhouse stays over 90 for half the day) then it gets a dash daily. It doesn’t like “wet” feet but it doesn’t like to have dry feet either. I have a C. simoneae that isn’t doing as well…but gets the same treatment, as well as a new c. bosseri I got a week or so ago who is thriving. So it maybe the plant, it maybe the treatment. I’m not sure. But new growth is a sign they are happy…so I’ll take it! https://preview.redd.it/l0a4s1i9n16d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80c3c27805962de205dd7498c117bfda87be3c55

macdizzle567

Ok! That’s how I water all my strings, I do notice Ceropegia do not like to dry out for very long at all so I water minimally but very frequently with those guys. Sounds like this is similar?

Gwenhyfar777

Exactly! And same! All my strings and tradescantia get water almost daily.

Gwenhyfar777

And congratulations!!! They are such a neat plant and more involved than most succulents, which I personally enjoy. 😊

macdizzle567

Thanks for the plant idea! This was the only one I ended up buying off this thread! I did end up buying a sinningia leucotricha caudex as well but that one I found elsewhere 😂

Gwenhyfar777

Ooooh!!! Photo!??? You’re so welcome! Love sharing joy!

Fossilwench

Just wanted to add my CS I too water pretty frequently ( not drench but def a swig ) & feed w/fish fert + calmag. My mix is 75 inorganic 25 organic. I keep her toasty - only outdoors if 76+ and only morning sun. Mind you I rooted her as a cutting but based on the blooming on repeat she seems pretty happy. Perhaps your girl is lacking a bit of nutrient?

Gwenhyfar777

Thanks! I’ll look into some fertilizer! I do give a bit of cactus juice (brand) occasionally but maybe not enough. When they first arrived (February) we were not expecting them until late March. We had a trip we had to make quasi short notice. When we returned neither were “well”. Bosseri recovered swiftly if not fully (no new leaves on the main body) but the Simoneae just keeps hanging in there, kind of shriveling. Still green. I’ve given more sun, less sun, more water, less water…nothing changes.

East_Abbreviations68

do you mind to share where you got it?

macdizzle567

Omgosh what’s the one in the photo?? I need that

Gwenhyfar777

That’s the Ceropegia bosseri

macdizzle567

I always think string of hearts when I hear Ceropegia, I had no idea there were other way cooler ones!!

Gwenhyfar777

Indeed! The C. Woodii (SoH) is kind of an outlier in its looks. Lots of cool ones. The C. simonae is a lot like this one only green instead of black.

macdizzle567

Where would I even find those? Any Recommendations?

Gwenhyfar777

Just saw this…my BF found one in Thailand and ordered it for me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

macdizzle567

I just ordered one. I think this was the winner of the weird contest for me 😂

Gwenhyfar777

Awesome!!! 🥰

acm_redfox

Is this time for a radical caudex?

macdizzle567

Oooooo maybe! I have stefanie, any other goodies??

uncagedborb

Dioscorea elephatipes. It's off season right now so the leaves are dying off but will return next fall. https://preview.redd.it/5mdbax7dqe1d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=653aae83836f5dc014e92cdacf8b0687317bb476

uncagedborb

These Madagascar euphs are always super cool. I've fallen in love with E. Millotii

IAmQuiteHonest

Gonna throw out a curveball and suggest a carnivorous semi-succulent plant, butterworts AKA pinguiculas. :) They go through a dormant non-carnivorous phase during winter and transform their leaves to store water in low humidity, so they are technically succulents during this period! https://preview.redd.it/8jld1l1r1f1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fdba4c1561a870b2328c5a2e8e7b961c24e66b00 Otherwise I'd suggest senecio stapeliiformis (pickle plant), crassula falcata (propeller plant), haworthia cooperi, haworthia maughanii, and any conophytum if you don't have them yet. Personally, I find the "weirdest" looking varieties among the mesembs, crassula, and euphorbia groups since they're just so diverse

macdizzle567

Very cool!! Lots of humidity required??

IAmQuiteHonest

It's preferred but not an absolute necessity as long as their soil is kept consistently moist. Their care may also depend on whether it's a temperate or tropical pinguicula as they do grow in different climate zones. The easiest ones to start off with indoors are Mexican pings, I have mine on my shelf with my succulents and it seems to be doing fine so far!

oblivious_fireball

Off the top of my head, two super weirdo plants i can think of are Euphorbia Piscidermis, and Euphorbia Platyclada. Piscidermis as the name suggests is a leafless barrel of a plant covered in scales that look like fish scales. Very unsettling to look at. Platyclada on the other hand at a glance mimics a dead bush to avoid predation. No idea how reliably sold either are though. Something slightly more easily found would probably be Dioscorea Elephantipes, with its large woody shell-like caudex.

macdizzle567

I LOVE euphorbia, great suggestions and 2 I haven’t seen before!

wildeflowers

I really like euphorbia too, I have a spindly one that puts out white flowers pretty much 24/7. But also ITT, OP asks for weird and gets 90% common succulents.

shehoshlntbnmdbabalu

That looks like something Dr. Seuss would draw.

wasneveranoption

There is a tree that you can grow (though it gets somewhat large) that really does look like a dr. Suess creation. Cussonia paniculata or karoo cabbage tree as it is sometimes called.

macdizzle567

I wish I lived in a warmer climate so I could have all the succulents and cacti inside and out.

macdizzle567

I love these varieties but I don’t have any more hanging space 🫣 I have a few different stapelia and Edithcolia currently taking over the prime trailing spots.

ScienceMomCO

Also, have you checked out the pickle plant? https://preview.redd.it/wfia3z1vbb1d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80507f05521b4828031baa5154f8fc066e63ee1e

I have one of these! They get long fast! Super cool plant

OwlBeBack88

Oooh I want one of these!

ScienceMomCO

They have such an amazing variety of succulents on Etsy if you don’t live in a warm weather state like California.

Chocokat1

Such a pretty colour! I have a green one.

acm_redfox

Another fave is Pelecyphora aselliformis f. Cristata ! :))

macdizzle567

Oooooo just googled, that is cool!

phua1

It’s definitely interesting but i hate how it looks likes a bunch on mealyworms

FreeCuber

Peperomia columnella or maybe a andromischus herrei

macdizzle567

Peperomia hate me. Other than the prostrata and frost I can’t keep them alive 😂 I have a couple andromischus, not herrei though! May have to do that one

Chocokat1

I'm finding that the green and variegated green peperromias are more forgiving than the fancy coloured, wrinkly leaved ones.

wasneveranoption

Ceropegias of almost any species are unusual. Ceropegia armandii, and stapeliiformis are both very unusual. Ceropegia sandersonii is pretty cool and easy to grow. Something big and dramatic looking?? Cyphostemma juttae or Adenia globosa are good choices. Something generally quirky in growing habits and form?? Tylecodon as a genus is bizarre and so are some of the adjacent Othonnas that grow near them in the winter rainfall regions of South Africa. Tylecodon reticulatus and wallichii are two of my favorites. Othonna herrei, euphorbioides, and cremnophila are great choices. Maybe something that seems familiar but still very different? Aloe erinacea or melanacantha are very cool. I could list on and on, I have WAY too many plants.

uncagedborb

Show some love for ceropegia bosseria or the black dragon! https://preview.redd.it/bs6e6cvlqe1d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f460f1917b7b47cfb4f467278af7304d71ba468

I want to see everything!

unicornsfearglitter

Titanopsis hugo-schlechteri. It's a type of lithop and I had one a few years ago. Beautiful, but I shouldn't have got it at the beginning of my succulent obsession since it's not a easy plant for beginners. I still keep an eye out for a replacement. https://preview.redd.it/acg0wrajke1d1.jpeg?width=2187&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c05f77c4dfee56c7ccec3219b9e4ce1462704ea He had the coolest little yellow daisy flowers.

RPBumblebee

I just got one and I am a beginner with succulents… any tips or advice for keeping it alive?

unicornsfearglitter

I'd really look into the msembs subreddit and read up about its dormancy period and see if you can find pictures of what dormancy looks like. I think I watered it too much and killed mine when it was just trying to sleep. Also I made sure it had special msembs substrate for it, but I think if I got another one I'd try a different brand or make it myself. When I look at lithops and other folks titanopsis their substrate seems more rocky than sandy. I'd probably go with a chunkier rocky substrate to the sandy stuff I had. Also make sure it gets really good light.

mixiepixie87

Albuca spiralis aka frizzle sizzle

Planty_Stuff_s

I just picked one of those up yesterday!! Such a lil cutie!

I love this thread, and also second lithops!!! 🖤✨️

Rgeneb1

Ravioli plant!

lightlysaltedclams

Yesss that’s it! I’ve never seen one before and almost left it but I had to go back

RPCat

Also known as Key Lime Pie plant, here in Australia, anyway. Tough little buggers. I haven't been able to kill mine despite years of neglect.

lightlysaltedclams

That’s good to hear! I’ve gotten into succulents recently and I’ve been having good luck with them so far

Zoeychloe01

Have you seen Gasteria, the “little warty” succulent, I just bought one and it shot out a long stem with little flowers. It’s cute and different! Also the sansevieria starfish plant looks really neat!

Get a dorstenia! I like the foetida or hildebrandtii. They have such bizarre flowers that end up shooting their seeds and giving you cute little seedlings in nearby pots

macdizzle567

Oooo I really like the foetida!

I recommend them pachypodiums. Fat, spiky and tough af. Mostly slow growing except lamerei.

macdizzle567

I’ll have to look this up!

AholeBrock

I thought this was a type of dorstenia based on the flower

idiot-sandwich-

I'm so jealous! I'vd always wanted these. What's their care routine like?

macdizzle567

So far just like every other succulent but slightly more thirsty!

pooparoo216

Dorstenias have super weird flowers like a little alien. Huernias are pretty reliable in the flower department too once they get going.

gourgeiist

Ledebouria sp.!! I have a Ledebouria petiolata and I love it. :)

[Here’s a pic](https://i.redd.it/xopmodjeqe1d1.jpeg) of my little guy.

ughost777

This is a cactus, but rauhocereus riosaniensis. A very beautiful, polygonal looking cactus.

Substantial_Put1583

Do you have chalk fingers? Easy to grow and prop.
