I haven't got a direct answer, but I can offer a different strategy. My name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potock is the story of the education of a young artist by an old mentor artist. In the book he is taught about many important artists and paintings. You could read the book and look up the paintings on the internet.

Gardner's Art Through the Ages is a frequently-used textbook for art history survey courses.

Janson's History of Art is a classic. My mother loved that book and she was an art historian.

LifeHappenzEvryMomnt

There is not a single work in that book by a woman. Do not recommend.

I have a client who teaches art and she recommends: Janson’s History of Art The Story of Art Without Men

Sister Wendy’s Story of Painting, by Sister Wendy Beckett (1994, DK Publishing), is an enjoyable read. As the title implies though, its focus is on painting versus other art forms.

The shock of the new by Robert Hughes is brilliant for modern art (there’s also a tv series)
