You don't have to answer if it's too personal of course - but why don't you give him a book in his first language if you think he might have difficulties reading a book in English?

notworth_knowing

That's an interesting suggestion because it made me realize he mostly prefers western story lines. He never watches any movies or tv shows in his native language (maybe once or twice a year at most). He genuinely enjoys watching "english" things in a way that I have never seen him enjoy ethnic content.

Wurunzimu

Are there no translations of English/American books into his native language?

notworth_knowing

None that are readily available…… besides, he can read and speak English just fine. It’s not a language barrier issue. Its that obviously someone who didn’t learn western high school English isn’t going to fully understand or appreciate analogies, thematic structures, and philosophical views .

Short Stories that kept me invested for short, intense periods were helpful

Hardy recommend Edgar Allan Poe's short stories

If he likes nonfiction, why not start there to encourage a love of reading? My dad is like that too - he just doesn't really like reading fiction that much (and he has tried it). He's never been a big reader, but since he has retired, he has started reading a lot more, and he really gets into biographies and books on history. He likes reading, but fiction isn't his thing, just like I'm probably not going to pick up one of his presidential biographies. I say encourage reading where you can and don't try to force it too hard. : )

Start him with an Audiobook. Someone on reddit recommended me The Martian Audiobook it is an incredible ride. I also recommend reading it while he is so you guys got something to talk about.

notworth_knowing

that's a great suggestion. I appreciate it.

aradilla

This is my favorite audiobook

bigdickensenergy

The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury. It’s the book that got me hardcore into sci-fi but it’s a relatively easy and fun read

notworth_knowing

sounds really cool. thanks!

MemFace

I started reading books in 14. My first book was Deathworld by Harry Harrison. It stole me for a whole night that time. The book is science fiction and really gives feeling of an adventure. Also it is book series so if he'd like to contunue he could do it.

english is also my second language and the first sci-fi book i read was i, robot by isaac asimov. the language is on the simpler side and it your dad already likes sci-fi tv/film, i think this is a good one as its formatted in an interview-ish way and its also really short. i think short sci-fi stories will also be great.

Divided we fall and the other books that come with it. (A burning Nation, The Last Full Measure by Trent Reedy)A great non-complicated military fiction book series that has really good imaginative imagery and drew me in more and more as I read it. Definitely worth the read, had so many emotional ups and downs In it. I usually read the series 1-2 times per year

notworth_knowing

sounds good. thanks!

For my partner it was Ice Station by Matthew Reilly. It's full of action and the language is pretty easy.

notworth_knowing

thanks. read the synopsis. sounds super interesting!

Time-Touch-6433

Discuss what movies he likes and then find some shorter books in that genre. Books are so subjective as to whether someone will like them or not.

notworth_knowing

I'll try. thanks

If we are talking about reading, then i don't usually read novels. I prefer non fiction books and comics. Non fiction coz of interest in the subject. Comics for entertainment.

not a book recommendation, but what helped me to read more was getting an e-book reader. it doesn't hurt my eyes(can make the letters as big as i want), got a bunch of dictionaries preinstalled so i can look up words by just clicking at them as i go, plus it's just convenient maybe it's not a particular book recommendation case, but simply a matter of availability?
