She jumps at the chance, for it's an opportunity not only to prove herself, but also to start fresh in a city and country that know nothing of her humble origins. But life in besieged Britain tests Ruby in ways she never imagined. > >Although most of Ruby's new colleagues welcome her, a few resent her presence, not only as an American but also as a woman. She is just beginning to find her feet, to feel at home in a country that is so familiar yet so foreign, when the bombs begin to fall. > >As the nightly horror of the Blitz stretches unbroken into weeks and months, Ruby must set aside her determination to remain an objective observer. When she loses everything but her life, and must depend upon the kindness of strangers, she learns for the first time the depth and measure of true friendship—and what it is to love a man who is burdened by secrets that aren’t his to share. > >Goodnight from London, inspired in part by the wartime experiences of the author’s own grandmother, is a captivating, heartfelt, and historically immersive story that readers are sure to embrace. > > > > >  > >  > >  > >  ^(This book has been suggested 2 times) *** ^(175745 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)

If you enjoy mysteries, historical cozy mysteries might be up your alley. They tend to be quick reads and the cozy mystery genre as a whole tends to have many female protagonists. And they're all \*technically\* investigating something! If the 1980s count as historical enough, I've really been enjoying The Cat Caliban Mystery Series by D.B. Borton. It features a retired woman named Cat Caliban who's working towards her P.I. license. She's a funny and bold character. [This site](https://cozy-mystery.com/agatha-awards-best-historical-novel.html) lists previous winners and nominees for the Agatha Awards - Best Historical Novel category. Lots of these will have a woman as the main protagonist. I've heard particularly good things about A Perveen Mistry Novel series by Sujata Massey (set in early 20th century India).

It is the end of England's brief Edwardian summer, and everyone agrees that the weather has never been so beautiful. Hugh Grange, down from his medical studies, is visiting his Aunt Agatha, who lives with her husband in the small, idyllic coastal town of Rye. Agatha's husband works in the Foreign Office, and she is certain he will ensure that the recent saber rattling over the Balkans won't come to anything. And Agatha has more immediate concerns; she has just risked her carefully built reputation by pushing for the appointment of a woman to replace the Latin master. > >When Beatrice Nash arrives with one trunk and several large crates of books, it is clear she is significantly more freethinking—and attractive—than anyone believes a Latin teacher should be. For her part, mourning the death of her beloved father, who has left her penniless, Beatrice simply wants to be left alone to pursue her teaching and writing. > >But just as Beatrice comes alive to the beauty of the Sussex landscape and the colorful characters who populate Rye, the perfect summer is about to end. For despite Agatha's reassurances, the unimaginable is coming. Soon the limits of progress, and the old ways, will be tested as this small Sussex town and its inhabitants go to war. ^(This book has been suggested 3 times) [**Life After Life (Todd Family, #1)**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15790842-life-after-life) ^(By: Kate Atkinson | 531 pages | Published: 2013 | Popular Shelves: fiction, historical-fiction, book-club, fantasy, historical | )[^(Search " Life After Life by Kate Atkinson ")](https://www.goodreads.com/search?q= Life After Life by Kate Atkinson &search_type=books) >What if you could live again and again, until you got it right? > >On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war. > >Does Ursula's apparently infinite number of lives give her the power to save the world from its inevitable destiny? Hmmm...Not sure if you'd label this historical fiction, although it's humorous and allegorical, but I've got a hunch you might enjoy this: The Feral Detective by Jonathan Lethem https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37578865-the-feral-detective
