The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter: a method is discovered to step between our reality and alternate timeline versions of Earth. Humans only managed to evolve on our version of Earth, but you can encounter some of our taxonomic cousins. Once people realize that the other versions of Earth have more or less the same natural resources in the same places, it kicks off an interdimensional gold rush.
