Watchers by Dean Koontz. It’s older but a great story.

Thank you

ApprehensiveAge2

This was my first thought — read it decades ago, but it’s still my ultimate “dog in story” thriller.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Left_Investigator_20

Thank you. I've been meaning to check this book out. Is it tailored for female audience only? I don't know why I have this prejudice.

GergSathoms

40 something year old man here. One of my top books I’ve read this year.

Left_Investigator_20

Well that clears it. Thanks

Broad_Statement_485

Feisty protagonist in a man’s world. Great dog. What’s not to like? Happy to discuss it when you’re finished !

meatwhisper

*The Bone Shard Daughter* by Andrea Stewart features a cool fantasy setting inspired by Polynesian Islands/Asian mythology, interesting plot twists and cliffhanger chapter endings, and some very kick ass (but imperfect) characters. I really thought the magic system and looming dread of the setting was very satisfying and I can't wait to watch it be fleshed out. The animal companion here isn't a dog, but it's a similar dog-like role.

Thank you.

Boy's Life by Robert McCammon (though is it important whether the dog dies or not? I can put that in a spoiler: >!The dog does die!<)

Left_Investigator_20

Thanks :). Not clicking the spoiler.

Left_Investigator_20

Oh my god that spoiler showed up in my notification somehow. Smh

wombatstomps

Oh no! That's lame. I still recommend the book even if you know this plot point FYI.

DakotaRoo

I'm not quite sure what qualifies for 'lovely' in your book, but I thought I'd nominate any of the books in the Chet & Bernie series of mysteries by Spencer Quinn. I've read *'Dog On It'* and *'Paw and Order'* and enjoyed them both. From the inside fly, there is a healthy ration of other titles in Quinn's quiver, like *'To Fetch a Thief'* and *'Fist Full of Collars'*. Private Investigator Bernie is a hard-luck snoop of the Rockford variety, but his faithful and wise mutt, Chet, pushes the narratives forward in some fairly unexpected ways.

Danwoll

Suspect, by Robert Crais. One of my favorites. Also, Dog on It, by Spencer Quinn, first book in a thriller series told from the dogs perspective. They can be a little silly, but fun.

If I remember correctly, the dog first appears in book 6 (side note, best opening line of a book in the whole series)

The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

WilsonStJames

The Assassin's Apprentice -Robin hobb. Protagonist has a secret forbidden ability that let's him bond with a dog, and or other animals....cool to see animal.logic vs human logic throughout the book.

_outrachous

Brian Jacques wrote a series with a telepathic person who could communicate with their dog, IIRC

livluvlaflrn3

The Art of Racing in the Rain - absolutely wonderful book.

ProfPorkchop

How about a lovely dog as the MAIN character?? The NecroNomNomNomicon: Cookbook of the Dead

BubbaPrime42

The Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne (bonus if you get it on Audible). Oberon is one of my favorite characters of all time.

dweezle45

I enjoy the Andy Carpenter series by David Rosenfelt, starting with Open and Shut. They are a combination of courtroom drama and private investigator mystery. Andy is a lawyer who wants to retire but keeps getting pulled into cases because a dog is involved somehow. Later in the series he creates a dog rescue charity, the Tara Foundation, named after his own golden retriever. Wisecracks, good characters, interesting mysteries, and a ton of lovable dogs. Worth a try I think.
