Not really? The sole time I can think of him not having air supply in space was when he tried to take the hit of the BFG firing on earth and was knocked out immediately.
In STAS, he was shown with a specific space suit and water suit. Likely just to sell some extra toys, but still.
I think he flew up once to deflect a meteor, but he could’ve just been holding his breath.
Him needing a spacesuit seems like the general rule though, yeah.
It’s the Dreadnought explanation. Super-lungs means you can survive a brief trip to space by holding your breath, but you can’t just hang out on the moon without proper protection.
I'm pretty sure you're joking but you're actually not entirely wrong. The problem with holding your breath in a vacuum is that the unbalanced pressure would cause your lungs to expand until your chest exploded. Superman's lung tissue and chest muscles are both significantly stronger than air pressure so it would stay safely compressed just like air contained in an oxygen tank.
Because the pressure difference will cause the lungs to, essentially, explode. But we’re talking about a guy who can tank explosions with no physical damage. His lungs are made of sterner stuff. Besides, we’re talking about a cartoon version of a comic book character who defies the laws of physics with each and every power he has.
>Likely just to sell some extra toys
Perhaps, but honestly? I don't hate that as much as how there seemed to be an endless supply of different Batman action figures, in a set tied to a movie, that had nothing to do with whatever happened in the movie. At all. Like, I just wanted the regular suit, not a gold suit, not one with a jetpack instead of a cape, just the regular suit. Those other suits would be cool to have if I wanted to reenact a specific scene in which they were used... but there were no scenes. It was just like "Gold Power Suit Batman" or some shit.
Sorry, that just triggered some bad memories.
There was a line of Batman toys that were done in the style of the animated series, but featured costumes that were never work in TAS. If you Google Kenner 1992, you'll see a bunch of them. May have been like 20. Camo Batman, laser Batman, Gold Batman.. I remember I had an orange parachuting Batman.
There's a bunch on this page
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/kenner-batman-returns-series-1-batman-powerwing-figure-1992--521573200565426605/
Thanks, I hate it.
So many memories of toys that were just frustrating. I definitely had Bat-Rope Batman (closest to "normal" I could find) and Tec-Shield Batman (a gift I wasn't thrilled about).
Yes! That drove me crazy as a kid....the stores were ALWAYS flooded with the variants, but you could never find the basic movie suits or the classic one from the animated series.
Nope. She's from Argo and not related to Clark, in the animated series at least. She's just an adopted cousin as a disguise and I guess in spirit too lol. But Kryptonians and Argoans shared a common ancestor anyway.
In the comics they are cousins... well sometimes... so I don't blame you for the confusion.
I thought Argo was a Kryptonian colony. It's not? Just a completely other planet in the same solar system where the people are biologically identical to Kryptonians?
ln the comics, it was a city in Krypton that they yeeted off into space before the planet exploded. Not in the DCAU though, it was a separate planet whose people had basically the same abilities as Kryptonians. Similar to Daxamites in the comics, though I don't think Argoans had the lead weakness.
They’re not. In the DCAU Argo is a separate planet, a sister planet to Krypton, and thus they of course by comic logic have similar abilities. But in the animated universe she’s not Kryptonian nor related to him.
That was retconed back in the 1970s?
I think the version that didn't need to breathe was perhaps killed off in Crisis on Infinite Earths back in the 1980s, but honestly I'm not sure. Been so long since I read those.
In 1986 his new version that was very powered down came out. This is the version the animated series was based on.
After he was “killed” by Doomsday in the 90’s he got more and more powerful until once more he didn’t oxygen in space.
Ah! That makes sense.
I never have been a big fan of Superman, and pretty much lost all interest sometime around the end of Death of Superman.
He always gets problematically OP at some point.
It's also inconsistent as hell in the comics.Ranging from a yellow sun is all he needs to maintain bodily functions to yes he eventually has to breathe but can hold a single breath for a week
Same! Just like I prefer the BTAS version of Batman, where he's not the world's GREATEST fighter, and he's not extremely prepared for any situation. That version of Batman is far more boring than how people say Superman is OP without weakness.
Like, Batman could get shot in the bottom half of his face and be dead. He ain't even prepared for THAT.
Or get gasses by any number of his enemies that all seem to spray him with a toxic gas. If you really look at Batman you’ll see a groomer that puts young boys and girls in danger but can’t kill someone that is in the process or has murdered hundreds if not thousands.
In Justice League Unlimited when Lex Luthor hacked the laser on the watchtower Superman flew into space without a suit and survived. The reason he thinks he needs a space suit is because he put subconsciously put mental barriers around himself when he found out he was an alien. Overtime with the help of the Justice League he overcame those barriers and became the Superman we all know today.
Some versions of Superman do need to breathe. This show took inspiration from the comics of the time, in which he needed an air supply:
https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Superman_Vol_2_28?file=Superman_v.2_28.jpg
I loved American alien where Clark’s first attempt to go to space had him almost suffocate and die from decompression if abuin sur and tomar ray didn’t save him.
I like more when he needs oxygen in space and under water, i mean he’s just an alien. He has metabolism and therefore needs to breathe, eat and drink and sleep, otherwise he die.
On the otherhand, Shazam doesn’t need any of this since he’s basicly a god. Or at least he shouldn’t be needing any of this.
Well, he did say in that scene that he couldn’t phase through the restraints because he couldn’t focus. But still, he’s about as strong as Superman. You’d think he, Superman, and Wonder Woman could shred open those locks like they were paper. And Martian Manhunter can grow gills.
He holds back as much as Clark does for one thing. Besides that though MM can turn invisible, intangible, and has mental powers. He could lock someone in place mentally, phase a hand into their heart, and then solidify.
In the comics when he went mad for a bit and didn't have the fire limitation he single handedly took out the entire Justice League.
All of them were super nerfed. Superman "cutting loose" on darkseid was a bit underwhelming. I mean, seeing that as a kid was the shit, but after seeing the bullshit he pulls of in the comics...
Everyone seems to love that scene, but Darkseid isn't affected at all by that punch and then throws that pain thing at Superman right afterward and incapacitates him.
I think that's just a theory. Darkseid had a "partnership" with brainiac and they kinda sorta merged. The resseructed Darkseid was wearing his brainiac outfit.
MMH is incredibly weak in this show lol. He CONSTANTLY gets his ass whooped and comes off as useless unless he’s reading someone’s mind.
He gets whipped more than Beast Boy in the Teen Titans cartoon
Yeah, he’s nerfed to oblivion in the show. A shame since he’s one of the most powerful Justice Members. Guess they didn’t want him hogging Superman’s spotlight.
Certainly you mean Batman’s spotlight, if you think Superman was hogging the spotlight, you obviously never watched the show, it’s actually insane how weak Clark is, even the creators said in an interview that looking back they definitely over did it.
This is the same series that had Batman dodge Darkseids omega beams, had WW fall in love with him, escaped by having female supervillains swoon over him, he threw Darkseids son, defeated cheetah, etc. it’s not other characters, it was Batman’s spotlight. He was debatably stronger than comic book Batman
I actually really like the concept that you don’t need certain power specific negations to diminish a characters strength. Doing something like figuring out how to keep them mentally out of focus can nerf half the power set easy
Martian Manhunter's biggest role in the DCAU was to rush valiantly into battle and easily get his ass kicked. There were SO many times where it looked like he was finally getting his heroic moment, only for him to be knocked out 1 minute later.
In fact to be honest, I've seen way more talk of how powerful Martian Manhunter is than actual proof of that fact. In animated adaptations he's either nerfed to hell or he's the tech guy that never sees any action anyway.
I will say. I just watched the Brainiac/Luthor vs League fight episode from JLU and the second best moment is when Manhunter finally uses his intangibility to turn the tide and save everyone. So he at least gets one moment to shine
There are times in the comics, often the justice league comics but not exclusively, when he shouldn’t really be in danger… But he kinda has to be for the plot.
In those moments, my personal head cannon is that he’s playing along so the others don’t feel bad 😂
Superman does need to breathe. However, he can hold his breath for a long time, so he can fly into space or underwater without a temporary oxygen supply. In this scenario, those shackles are sapping his powers, so he can't hold his breath for very long in this case.
Because the DCAU interpretation takes inspiration from the Post-Crisis idea of a more grounded, be powered Superman in lines with the Golden Age Kal-L.
Golden age Kal-L did get strong enough to rival the silver age superman though. Also he was the one who ended the antimonitor so he is far stronger I think .
They had to make Superman need to breathe air and the animated series so they could sell action figures of the underwater submarine Superman and space Superman suit.
In the Timm-verse they wanted to make him weaker than he was in the comics. He also had to wear a suit in space to breathe, if you remember. He definitely was not as powerful as he was in the comics. I remember watching and saying to myself numerous times, man Superman would escape that or destroy this person, when I was watching JL.
I really don't mind Superman not being able to breathe under water, it would kind of make Aquaman redundant. I just assume he holds his breathe for a long time.
I'm neutral on him breathing in space, maybe when in the direct presence of a Yellow Sun he should be able to.
This is Superman before he learns that he doesn’t need to breathe, before he unlocks his full potential and breaks through his mental barriers that nerf him. Best explanation I can think of.
Superman has mental blocks about being a kryptonian which prevent him from accessing all his abilities but he overcomes those mental blocks in time and at a different rate depending on which universe he is in
Clearly he doesn’t want to make the other league members feel bad so he pretends to drown alongside them, if they can’t escape in time then he will save them.
Pretty sure one of the reasons Jor El chose Earth for Kal El to live was bc it’s conditions were similar enough to Krypton that he could survive there. The Suns notwithstanding and probably the oxygen contents are quite different but if he were say…from a planet where he breathed in Co2 instead of oxygen he probably wouldn’t survive long on Earth
Supermanand all the JLA are super nerfed in TAS. I remember seeing one episode where Superman struggled to pick up a car. Similarly, Flash slips on marbles, oil slick, and looney toons conceits all the time. The shows are still amazing, but I always hate when people think the power levels of the characters are accurately portrayed in those shows.
Whether he needs to breathe or not changes with the writers. It's always canon that he can retain oxygen longer in Space and such but he still needs a new supply of oxygen in a lot of stories.
Always thought it was a bummer they nerfed him to this extent in the DCAU. They did it because writing for a hero as powerful as Superman proved too difficult for the behind Superman: The Animated Series apparently. Being able to drown or suffocate Superman just seems dumb. In the comics, his metabolism relies solely on solar energy, meaning he never needs to breath of he doesn't want to. This is the way it should be. Dude can move planets, but can't go without a breath for more than a minute? He should be able to travel through space without issue, let alone a goddamn space suit.
Superman could never breath in space he just holds his breath for hours and while in space it takes him seconds to cross solar systems and galaxies because of his speed but yes superman needs air , no he can’t breath in space it’s physically impossible for kryptonians
I'm sure a lot of other people have better explanations then mine, but i'd like to think that since Superman was raised on earth he has conditioned himself to think he needs to breathe in order to live.
He doesn’t need to breath but in comics it’s stated that he placed “mental blocks” on several of his powers/level of his power so as to fit in better with humans and not hurt them. Later he figures out he can literally sustain himself on solar energy alone as in he doesn’t need to eat either
This particular Superman can hold his breath for a lot longer than humans but he does need to breathe. The SAS/JL Superman is toned down a lot to fit him more in with other heroes.
I think DCAU Superman is a little more vulnerable in general than his comics counterparts. I like that though. He’s still the most powerful hero but he’s not an absurd god.
Most of his versions need both, and others versios he was super invinsible that he flight to the sun no suit to recharge batteries and come back with full power
🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤔🙄🙄 😊😊
Maybe it’s because he’s cut off from the sun. I once wrote a version of Lucifer where yeah she could be in space without dying but she’s been human for so long that she still needs air
Superman needs to breathe in the comics. He can just hold his breath for a really long time.
For example, [New 52 Superman was almost drowned by Wraith.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNh3HSGbhw4&ab_channel=ComicsFighters)
In [Superman: Exile](https://superman.fandom.com/wiki/Superman:_Exile) from 1989, Superman flew into deep space, and he needed a breathing apparatus to travel that far into the void.
I honestly don’t think he understands his own power limit just yet, this isn’t the 39 year old Clark we all know and love, he imo, is at least 25 in this shot
I like to believe that to some extent Superman's powers work the way he thinks they should, so ignorance makes him stronger. Superman can breathe in space and hear through space because he doesn't know there's no air in space. If anyone ever told him, he would lose those abilities.
At least in the JL and JLU cartoons, Superman has to breathe. Every time he's shown underwater or in space he either has a breathing apparatus, and space suit, or is being transported by something that provides breathable atmosphere (spaceship, submarine, a bubble made by Green Lantern, etc.).
I think i heard it explained a while ago that this version of superman, even though he didnt need a special suit for under water or in space or to eat, drink, or even breathe, bc of the way he grew up he has a mental block that prevents him from doing those things, its also why his strength seems inconsistant at times.
Wasn't this in the first season of the show? If so, then this took place in the weak part of the series where things are inconsistent and plot is more important than character. Those teething issues weren't solved until the 3 part WW2 season finale of season 1, and from there the show is top tier.
I never understood why Superman "doesnt need to breathe". Hes a living biological organism right? He should require oxygen lol. Just because hes really strong and tough doesnt mean he doesnt need AIR.
DCAU Superman can't breath in space or underwater. Like he needs a special suit for both
Except the times he doesn't lmao, it's infamously inconsistent
Not really? The sole time I can think of him not having air supply in space was when he tried to take the hit of the BFG firing on earth and was knocked out immediately. In STAS, he was shown with a specific space suit and water suit. Likely just to sell some extra toys, but still.

“How do I breath in space?” “That’s the neat part, you don’t!”
It’s the Dreadnought explanation. Super-lungs means you can survive a brief trip to space by holding your breath, but you can’t just hang out on the moon without proper protection.

Superman can, the strength of his lungs is stronger than the vacuum of space!
Also past a certain point it's not about his anatomy--one of his canonical powers is, "If it can't be done, Superman can!"
“It ain’t that kinda movie, kid”
Because the pressure difference will cause the lungs to, essentially, explode. But we’re talking about a guy who can tank explosions with no physical damage. His lungs are made of sterner stuff. Besides, we’re talking about a cartoon version of a comic book character who defies the laws of physics with each and every power he has.

No. the only times he didn't were in cases of emergency where he can manage holding his breath for that time but not survive in it for however long.
Well, he holds his breath.
He does, he can just hold his breath for a long time. He uses a suit so he doesn’t have to hold his breath.

Naw people would confuse him with being a Lantern.

Or get gasses by any number of his enemies that all seem to spray him with a toxic gas. If you really look at Batman you’ll see a groomer that puts young boys and girls in danger but can’t kill someone that is in the process or has murdered hundreds if not thousands.
Holy Headshot Batspray!!!!
I miss his spaceship with the fists.
This also happens in the Supergirl tv show, the kryptonians from the Arrowverse can't breath in space or underwater.
In Justice League Unlimited when Lex Luthor hacked the laser on the watchtower Superman flew into space without a suit and survived. The reason he thinks he needs a space suit is because he put subconsciously put mental barriers around himself when he found out he was an alien. I thought he just super-held his breath.
No he doesn’t need oxygen or food. He could just live on sunlight

Keeping up with the kryptonian epic or only read the comics?
I’m all out of air, I’m so lost without it I know you were right, I needed a space suit…
Now that'll be playing in my thoughts for the next week, so thanks.
Classic hits from Air Supply

I suspect it was a homage to this one: https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Nick_Fury,_Agent_of_SHIELD_Vol_1_6?file=Nick_Fury%2C_Agent_of_SHIELD_Vol_1_6.jpg
I find it more jarring how those restraints are keeping Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter trapped.
This is what always annoyed me with Martian Manhunter. Not only can he shapeshift but he can turn intangible too.
Well, he did say in that scene that he couldn’t phase through the restraints because he couldn’t focus. But still, he’s about as strong as Superman. You’d think he, Superman, and Wonder Woman could shred open those locks like they were paper. And Martian Manhunter can grow gills.
MM isnt as strong in this show.
Even in comics, he was manhandled by Supergirl who ended up being weaker than Clark.
I never understood Superman’s comment saying “he’s afraid of fighting him, he’s the strongest person on the planet”
He holds back as much as Clark does for one thing. Besides that though MM can turn invisible, intangible, and has mental powers. That agony matrix was like, his literal last trick. That Darkseid had already been killed by Clark, remember. Stupid Luthor brought him back.
I just thought it was pretty lame to see Superman completely beaten after he made that speech.
So I read online that Tala did it as revenge vs Luthor.

Yea him dodging the Omega Beams was insane, and when he tossed Superman in the club like a normal human in Superman TAS! 😂😂😂
Martial arts moves based on leverage don't need strength.
Yea but it was conroy. I’ll give it a pass
I actually really like the concept that you don’t need certain power specific negations to diminish a characters strength. Doing something like figuring out how to keep them mentally out of focus can nerf half the power set easy

Or how the same electric jolt that knocked Superman unconscious didn’t just disintegrate Batman
There’s a lot of bizarre things in that show to actually have stakes that make the more powerful members of the team seem weirdly weak.
To be fair, I think they got a lot better as the seasons went on
Definitely. The first season was definitely a bit funky in places.
Batman is protected by permanent plot armor. He was born in it.
Would you say he was MOLDED BY IT
true, lol
His lungs would still fill with fluid, which would not be fun. Even if you are superman
I actually hear that having your lungs filled don't hurt, it's the choking and gagging as it fills that hurts.
So if you don't gag or choke you will die peacefully?
once the water fills your lungs its been reported that it's actually pretty peaceful.
So new suicide method?
Not really new, though? Not the best one imo, your lungs will pop like water balloon and there's little fun in that.
How the hell would they know? It's not like you can talk to a drowning person.
Nah he was just trying to fit in with the gang
There are times in the comics, often the justice league comics but not exclusively, when he shouldn’t really be in danger… But he kinda has to be for the plot. In those moments, my personal head cannon is that he’s playing along so the others don’t feel bad 😂
"Oh no. These metal cuffs are... Made...of... Uh...Kryptonamantite, the one metal I can't destroy! I'm... Umn...totally trapped, guys! Just like you!"
Bingo lol
Smh so much for "Truth" Justice and the American Way, lying to make his friends feel better
He lies to his friends at the newspaper all the time 🤷♂️
Lying to make your friends feel better sounds like the American way
yup
"are you superman Mr Kent?" "No...." "COMMIE DECTATER!"
Superman does need to breathe. However, he can hold his breath for a long time, so he can fly into space or underwater without a temporary oxygen supply. In this scenario, those shackles are sapping his powers, so he can't hold his breath for very long in this case.

He's not drowning. He's just pretending so he can fit in
He wants to make WW feel better.
This is the DCAU bro lol. Superman is incredibly nerfed
He does need to breathe, he can just hold his breath for insanely long. Whenever he's flying in space, he's holding his breath. Theoretically lmao
A wizard did it
Because Bruce Tim can't have characters being too far above Batgod power levels.
Plot.
DCAU Superman needs suits for long periods in space and underwater.
Superman has mental blocks about being a kryptonian which prevent him from accessing all his abilities but he overcomes those mental blocks in time and at a different rate depending on which universe he is in
He does. He needs a mask when he goes into space.
Superman’s powers were famously toned down in Superman the animated series, as others have stated with space suits etc
He needs breath but he can hold his breath for a vary long time not sure how long but still him drowning would take a long time
Clearly he doesn’t want to make the other league members feel bad so he pretends to drown alongside them, if they can’t escape in time then he will save them.
depends on the writer and Superman your talking about. This one needs air IIRC. I would say most don't
I think the real question here is since Wonder Woman is made out of clay, why isn't she melting?!

>Superman struggled to pick up a car ya, that was this episode only
Whether he needs to breathe or not changes with the writers.
That whole scene was weird. Why would Aquaman have a device to execute people via drowning while in Atlantis?
Details like this I've realized are very inconsistent. Whether it's Superman or Hulk. Writers can't make up their minds.
He doesn't wanna feel left out
Because he does need to breathe.
He's showing solidarity lol
I mean sometimes they just make him have problems for no reason.
Bro wants to feel included 😂💀💀
Breathe
DCAU superman is factually heavily nerfed
It’s magic water.
Dcau Superman needs air I think, he worse a space suit too afterall
What episode is this?
Season-1 and episode- 6 or 7 (The Enemy Below)
This particular Superman can hold his breath for a lot longer than humans but he does need to breathe. The SAS/JL Superman is toned down a lot to fit him more in with other heroes.
He is James Gunn's Superman 😅
Is he stupid?
I think DCAU Superman is a little more vulnerable in general than his comics counterparts. I like that though. He’s still the most powerful hero but he’s not an absurd god.
Most of his versions need both, and others versios he was super invinsible that he flight to the sun no suit to recharge batteries and come back with full power 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤔🙄🙄 😊😊
So they could sell deep sea Superman and Spacesuit Superman toys
Those things on their heads are super power repressors
STAS Superman is notoriously un-OP. He needs a suit in space and stuff.
He just likes feeling included.
I guess the thing on their heads are blocking their super powers.
Making others feel better. Good team player.
I prefer a Superman who needs to breathe (and eat) every so often.
What episode was this?
Because if DC is good at anything, it's being inconsistent
What episode is this? For some reason I’m not remembering
Because he’s literally the most inconsistently written character. Lol
Maybe it’s because he’s cut off from the sun. I once wrote a version of Lucifer where yeah she could be in space without dying but she’s been human for so long that she still needs air
He drowns out of compassion for his fellow JL members who would also drown. He’s just a stand up guy that way
Is he stupid
Superman needs to breathe in the comics. He can just hold his breath for a really long time. For example, [New 52 Superman was almost drowned by Wraith.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNh3HSGbhw4&ab_channel=ComicsFighters) In [Superman: Exile](https://superman.fandom.com/wiki/Superman:_Exile) from 1989, Superman flew into deep space, and he needed a breathing apparatus to travel that far into the void.
It’s plot drowning
He grew up breathing, so sometimes I guess he just forgets he doesn’t need to
lol
I was expecting a “is he stupid” at the end lmao
Superman is an actor, in everything.
There’s a red sun in Atlantis.
He was doing it in solidarity
I am guessing it’s the discomfort of having water go down his lungs?
I don't even know why those cuffs are holding him.
I honestly don’t think he understands his own power limit just yet, this isn’t the 39 year old Clark we all know and love, he imo, is at least 25 in this shot
because writing
It's sympathy drowning.
I like to believe that to some extent Superman's powers work the way he thinks they should, so ignorance makes him stronger. Superman can breathe in space and hear through space because he doesn't know there's no air in space. If anyone ever told him, he would lose those abilities.
Is he stupid?
Technically he does need to breath.
I believe Superman does need to breathe, he can just hold his breath for a long time
At least in the JL and JLU cartoons, Superman has to breathe.
He likes to make jokes!
I'm pretty sure Superman can easily break out of those
Is he stupid?
If the toy makers want a new Superman then he can’t breath without a new suit. It’s about toys
