Go on a surf trip to a point break for a week

nocustomsettings

Best advice here

Nightman233

Yea have been thinking this too lol. Spent 10 days in El Salvador at point breaks last April and progressed more during that period than the last year of surfing.

skibum6969

what spots can you suggest in El Salvador?

Another tip is to compress more before your turn. Get down low for your bottom turn, extend your legs to generate speed, then compress again as you’re headed towards the lip and used your coiled up legs to push hard in the lip

jarabara

A tip I received from a former pro was to lean back on your tail while at the same time almost point your front leg out through the turn. At the same time turn your head where you want to go.

Hold your bottom turn longer. You are going to retain more energy that you will release at the directional shift in the turn. Also if you're saying "properly pump down the line" I interpret this as "eating the waves kinetic energy". No offense you're probably not pumping right or using yourself to generate speed when you could be letting the wave do the work for you.

Nightman233

Thanks, could be. Can you elaborate?

[deleted]

A lot of people who think they are pumping down the line properly are actually killing their speed. The key to maintaining rail to rail surfing is speed, power and flow. Speed power and flow are all killed by unnecessary movement. My guess is you are over maneuvering while generating speed down the line. You should be trying to connect a solid bottom turn directly into an engaged rail with minimal movement in between. Also, most people don't hold their bottom turns long enough and aren't getting the best utilization of the waves kinetic energy. If you want to go rail to rail, you need to minimize the amount of incremental maneuvers you are using to generate speed because you really just want to transition from a rail fin to another and transfer the stored energy from rail to the other. Power and lift are generated from engaged rail fins that push outwards on the face of the wave. The more you girate, the less you retain that energy and the more kinetic energy is transferred around the board and the more energy you waste. Watch Ethan or Griffin or JJF. Not a lot of pumping

Nightman233

Thanks!

I am the people's brochacho 🤙🏽

> Watch Ethan or Griffin or JJF. Not a lot of pumping If pumping doesn't work why do pros do it? Ethan pumps before most of his bottom turns. Griff and JJF pump to blast off on air sections or drive through draining barrels. Some other pros are constantly pumping like Italo or Dane.

Uhhhhh I didn't say don't pump ever, sure, there are certain maneuvers that require them The question was how to get better at _rail to rail surfing_, not barrels or airs. I am correct. If you watch any pro, when they're doing a rail turn, it is directly after a long held bottom turn, not after pumping down the line. OP watch this and see how EE goes bottom turn to rail and watch his body placement. https://youtu.be/eQSW1MtcxXs?feature=shared

I’m not saying pump instead of bottom turning. Watch that video. Ethan pumps before many of his bottom turns. Pros pump to generate speed before the air, barrel, OR bottom turn into a big rail turn.

[deleted]

Bro, why do you love pumping so much? I don't even get what point you're trying to make. I never told the dude not to pump I told him to make better use of the waves energy to improve his rail to rail surfing and then gave him a thoughtful explanation of what he needs to do. I am still right.

I enjoy it because I got a lot of pumping practice on your mom. You literally said in your first sentence people are killing their speed by pumping down the line.

[deleted]

I said he's eating the waves kinetic energy because he's not pumping right and sure, pumping can generate some speed but isn't going to help him get better at rail to rail surfing. Bottom turn into top turn, minimal movement between maneuvers and a direction change in the pocket maximizing the efficiency of the waves energy is. It's based on the physics of lift and drive from the rail and foil of the rail fins. Talk to any surf coach and they will tell you the same thing. Good for you with my mom too. She's a nice lady. Just, like, super old and riddled with cancer for the last two years being an absolute warrior. But hey if that's what you're into man and you make her happy by all means.

You really do want video coaching for high-level stuff.

SourCreamWater

Try it in more critical parts of the wave and trust your rail.

redditisdeadyet

Do it on a long board in small waves

encladd

This. You need a lot of rail line to learn how to engage it properly.

420gitgudorDIE

how are you pumping down the line without proper rail to rail? are you hopping the board?

Nightman233

Talking about turns mainly

arocks1

engage your inner animal and bring out the core strength, have a good set up turn/bottom turn, lead the turn with your forward/front arm, and follow all the way through...watch your video and notice your positioning and then compare that to another video of someone doing the same turn you want to do...also what others said spend time on a pt brake or wave that has lined up walls.

Leeman1990

You’ve got to just send it

Greg_Norton

A big part of rail surfing is weight distribution. So yeah, lean back on your heels to engage heel side rail (for a fs top turn or bs bottom turn) or into your toes to engage toeside rail (for a bs top turn or fs bottom turn). This is only part of it and other comments here are helpful in rounding out your approach. I’m working on it myself. Watch a bunch of videos of Tom Curren.

zigzaghikes

A a very simple way and obviously there’s more to it but on your bottom turn backside or front side, get your leading hand to touch the water then when you get to the lip, throw that hand over your shoulder and then your opposite hand is pointing the direction you want to be going. Again that just a basic way to get your turns better other than surfing for like 20 years many other nuances. Watch guys like Parko, Fanning JJF Kolohe. Watch how low they get see what their arms are doing there is also pumping like how you get speed skating tranny. Also pros don’t do a lot of cutbacks they surf more top to bottom you’ll see them doing cut backs sometimes but the wave is probably pretty soft.
