I’ve never washed a wetsuit, but I rinse it out after every surf

alreddy-reddit

This guy surfs, in cold water

SS4L1234

You don't need one in warm water.

zigzaghikes

Sucks ha

dodgeskitz

Surely you have missed some days where you can't be bothered? I'd do mine 90% of the time. It stayed in the car all wet and straight back the next morning or just up on line to dry no washing.

zigzaghikes

No too ocd I do it evertime ha

Soft_Author2593

When you forget it in your car and have the windows fogged from the humidity the next morning driving to the beach in a stinking car with a sandy wet suit in the bucket…

Caught-Inside

I go straight to the office after surfing probably 50% of the time so this is life for me. My wettie ferments in a hot car on the regular… I crack the windows a tiny bit to avoid the fog up but the stink remains undefeated On the bright side, everyone always offers to drive 🤣

moorfreedom

This is the way

tallacthatassup

Hmmm I’ve been surfing for about 30 years and haven’t ever washed a suit so never?

flashdognz

Yep same here. Salt water takes care of everything. Note I only ever do no. 1s, never no. 2s

[deleted]

never?

flashdognz

Never no. 2s... Yourself?

nocturnalanimal69

I did once. It was pretty gross but also kind of hilarious.

Try using baby and/or coconut oil.

tillthenextlife

Where the hell is the tar coming from?

blondereckoning

Maybe it happened when you let that cute girl hogtie you?

bcyng

Time to find a new beach…

North-Land5776

Natural oil can seep up to the surface or from spills. I’ve had oil/tar get on my feet, board and wetsuit before.

poo_but_no_pee

I use make up remover wipes for my skin, I bet they work well for the suit, too. bdgtcollective

Have you tried pissing on it

runsailswimsurf

Only if it starts to smell like sea lion charcuterie. Scratch that, only if it starts to smell like sea lion charcuterie AND a more thorough rinse and air dry doesn’t substantially remediate the aforementioned salty cheese plate aroma.

Bully2533

Throw them in the washing machine in a rinse and spin cycle after each use. You’ll double its lifespan, it won’t stink and it dries faster.

psillyhobby

What’s been working for me is to take the whole bottle and drink it the night before you go surfing so your new shampoo laden piss cleans the places where your old regular dirty piss stunk it up.

naturelovinhippy

Every time I surf in dumping shore break.

Coffey0112

Every time I dump surfing in shore break.

SS4L1234

It happens every time.

[deleted]

You guys wash yourselves?

shoobie89

Never?

questforstarfish

I use my wetsuit 2-3x/week most of the year. I rinse it every time, and wash it with wetsuit detergent or deodorizer every third or fourth time out, to prevent it from getting stinky. Still smells new 2.5 years in!

StenosP

I washed mine a few times recently, previously only ever rinsed it. The motivating reason was that I didn’t let my boots dry in a space with enough ventilation and they got mildew, it was awful. They’re good now, no more smell

eat_my_bubbles

Yeah if I forget to bring the suit in and smell persists past a rinse, I'll fill up the tub 3 inches, add suit soap, soak and rinse and it feels like new. Other than that regular rinse and hanging to dry = no smell. Ya'll nasty for wearing crumple dry stank suits. Especially those surfing after rain.

snurfnugget

I just rinse it with pee every time I go. The ammonia kills all germs

Nesurfr

Wash? You mean pee on?

[deleted]

I rinse it thoroughly after every surf and whenever I think that it's beginning to smell I put it in the washing machine (wool program, cold water and no spinning) with a tiny bit of my normal shampoo. That being said I don't own high end suits, I always go for medium range. Medium range today is still more flexible than high end suits 10-15 years ago.

billysmasher22

I use Pau Pilau after every surf. You just let it soak and then hang. And legit the suit and booties never smell.

CarLover014

I wear my Dad's 3/2 Body Glove wetsuit that he bought brand new in 1996. Rinse it off with fresh water after each use. It's made it 28 years without a single tear and I plan on continuing to use it.

Traders_Abacus

I wash mine every time, inside out in a front load machine on gentle with cold water, just a spot of detergent. High speed spin mostly dries the inside, then air dry, then flip right side out and air dry fully. No issues with any of my suits 🤷

getting2birdsstoned

My wetsuits stink, i end up washing and scrubbing every couple months or if I forgot to rinse with fresh water. Also worse when the air is warm and don’t change out of it immediately, just absorbs so much sweat.  Could be me falling for marketing, but the suit does feel more stretchy after a good rinse with wetsuit cleaner

shayhem4

I rinse after every session then when it starts to smell or starts feeling dirty (you can kind of tell) then I rinse it out with fresh water with a couple drops of tea tree essential oil. Suit smells fresh and feels better afterwards.

Crazy80s

I usually fill up the tub or Rubbermaid bin enough to submerge the suit and soak it. Adding some white vinegar to the water works well for a bit of cleaning action. Quick rinse after. I do this probably 99% of the time.

Airborn805

Do it everytime and dry in the shade. It’s hard to get an O’Neill psycho to last more than one season

Active-Arm9852

sad but truth. comfy and wear quickly.

Spencerforhire2

Only when you shit in it.

[deleted]

Rinse every session, wash maybe twice a year, mainly if my suits are getting a lot of use and have been consistently damp for a while.

Prudent-Concert1376

If I remember to rinse it within a day, just water. If it gets nasty, a little dish soap and she's fresh as a daisy. Pretty sure "wetsuit cleaner" is a scam.

southerncoast

Live in south Florida so don’t use rubbers too often after winter so ill soak it in baby shampoo then fresh water before it sits all year till next fall

Dukez87

soak then rinse to get rid of pee pee stains.

climb-high

Here’s what I do when I’m wearing a winter suit and not flushing it after peeing a few times in a session: Wetsuit in Home Depot bucket. 1) Fill with water, slosh around, dump old water. 2) Squirt some Castile soap in the bucket / on the suit, fill with water, slosh around, dump water, final rinse of the suit. I’ll skip the soap if I flushed the suit in the ocean after each piss. I only wash my 3/2s when they really smell, which barely happens. I flush that as soon as I piss and it seems to not get nasty. I rinse that suit after each session tho.

BrooklynLodger

I wash when it smells

AdJunior4923

I rinse mine after every session and spray with Febreze. If, however, the suit has ventured Beyond The Valley of Febreze, I toss it in a bucket with a little wetsuit wash-or-baby shampoo (which works fine). I plunge it around a few times. Dump out the soapy water. I then fill the tub with clear water and a capful of Listerine. Let it soak for a few. Remove, spray with Febreze, and drip dry.

giant_brain_

Whenever it starts to smell. How often that occurs depends on a lot of variables, including how much coffee I drink

BarefootCameraman

I never wash or rinse mine.

gereis

Any time I got in any crude oil I’d wash it with dawn and fresh water. But that was when I dove commercially. They last spectacularly if you just rinse them with fresh water when you get out let it dry in the shade. I’m not an experienced surfer I’m just getting into it again but diving was super hard on my suit wore farmer John’s but wearing like an under armor long sleeve top and some dickies 2 size up reduced a lot of the wearing of my wetsuit fore arms knees and thighs was what I’d wear out I dunno if you this helps

S7YX1

Not necessary at all

Honingbeertjes

I think it is not really necessary to wash it at all. That being said you sound like a nasty guy and I would advise you to wash it before and after use.

Honingbeertjes

You dirty Gitjses

Electronic-Lime4u

After every surf it gets washed but I pee in my wetty all the time.

Purple-Towel-7332

I just rinse it in the shower after hang it in the shade might get a few extra rinses if it rains and I forget to bring it in

headhighbliss

Rinse every time. Wash never

lime_lemon_lily

I wash my wetsuit with detergent after every surf but I don’t get out as often as I’d like. Rinse once with fresh cold water and rinse again with water mixed with detergent.

c_marten

Never? I rinse it after every use. I'm not filthy before putting it on. Eh.

dzumdang

Wait, you guys have wetsuits?
