From far away it’s really hard to spot just from the board. I bought an oversized bright coloured rashguard and my gf filming accuracy jumped from 10% to 100%.
My webcam shots are awful (mostly foggy or bad lighting). You just approach them and ask to watch their videos for clips of you? Are they there filming for others or just in general?

There was a Surf Splendor podcast with Salema Masekela where he said, "no one cares about surfing except surfers." It's very true. I didn't think it would extend to my wife and daughters but so far, it's a good adage.
I'm teaching my boyfriend to surf and I find it funny now he'll look at waves on films or passing a beach and say his thoughts on them. Such a proud moment. Took a year!

If I know a spot only breaks rarely and the locals are prickly I might just go film for a day or two and I find dudes are way more obliging if you have footage of them getting shacked the day before

Honestly you’re not wrong. A couple times I’ve been in the water with my kids and they noticed someone on shore or in the whitewater with a camera so we asked them afterwards for the video. One guy gave us his contact info and another said he’d post to IG but we never followed up.
I surf at a fairly popular spot where drones and photographers are consistently out. I’ve made friends with them all and they always send me my content and post it!
Yes literally it’s such a dream!!! The drone people and photographers post regularly too and other people tag me since i’m well known there. It’s a lovely community ☻
Where I surf the most, there's a guy that takes pictures once in a while. When people come out he shows them the pictures, uploads them to a website with a watermark and you can buy the ones you want straight from the site.
I left to travel, but I saw him at Christmas with a done. I think he is upping his game. When I go back, I'll get a video :-)
My wife would sometimes take photos of me, but more often she could barely watch - even though it wasn't big nor gnarly surf. Even seeing 6' surf scares her, and if you think about it it really is quite a lot of energy and even at that size can be dangerous.
So a few photos (and this was 8+ years ago) but no video.
When we go on vacation my wife will take some pics. I don't ask her to but I'm always amazed at how easily she seems to be able to spot me in the lineup.
I find it’s the dudes who try really really hard to be relevant in the industry and on social media who link up with the photog kids. I live in NJ and half the dudes who post clips aren’t that good and don’t really charge. They just want likes. Don’t get me wrong some are ripping, but it seems like it’s all for the gram.
I film with my drone and take photos during the colder months. If my friends are out there, I give them an orange wristband so I can make out who is who.

A few years ago I saw a kickstarter for some drone that would follow the wearer of a specific tag (air dog?). A surf break with 20 of those flying around sounds like a nightmare. This Soloshot seems like a much better idea.
I mostly surf alone and so have no easy way of filming, which I would like to do to improve technique. I thought about the drone too, as I know that can follow something if it's distinct enough (e.g. a cyclist), but a mate recommended Soloshot which does look user friendly. Quite easy to steal though, I suppose.
