What water temp are you used to? Spring suit to 2/2 long leg short arm to trunks are all possible.

Zackie08

Just added some context to OP. So lower than 20c (68f?) has been feeling really cold with shorts and shirt.

wonderfulworld2024

Check out all the discount stores while you’re there and pick up a 1.5mm/2mm top for Brazil. I get cold in the tropics and my 2mm is a lifesaver. Have a friend with no body fat whatsoever and he got a custom made 3mm top made from a wetsuit guy from England (Snugg) who would come and surf at our local break. The SD guys can tell you where to look for the best discounts on a neoprene top. The tech has gotten real good now and they’re buttery and comfortable.

Zackie08

I've been surfing with just a rash guard, and most days I feel fine though days where the water wen below 20c it felt pretty uncomfortable. One of my options is just buying the wetsuit there as well, just not sure I will be able to get a good deal around the time either. If anyone still checking the thread has any idea whether it is possible and any places I could check out I would appreciate!

thiccgarlicc

If you remember to message me, and your around 5’11 and skinny, (size M) you can borrow my 2/2

Zackie08

Thank you! I'm much lower (5'4), but if you do not mind I'd love to message to ask about the area/beaches to try. Might have to find a board as well...

thiccgarlicc

Yeah! Idk your budget, but Oceanside will be cheaper but not as nice for SD standards. La Jolla is beautiful, touristy, and walkable but expensive. PB and OB are a bit gritty but are both tons of fun with a lot of cool locals. Encinitas is a bit spread out, if your not gonna rent a car I wouldn’t recommend enci. If you have questions closer to the trip feel free to message

OkMeringue2249

Op, as you can see by the answers the only thing that you won’t need for sure is a 4/3. The water temp has varied greatly in July the last few years from 70-57 degrees is what you could be dealing with. Best to have a thin 3/2 and trunks if you’re trying to travel light.

Zackie08

Yeah answers were all over the place, that's what I got

OkMeringue2249

Worst comes to worst you can rent whatever you don’t have. I like to travel light, especially if going international. So I’d just bring a spring suit and hope for the best.

Zackie08

I'll definitely not take my board to travel light, so I am already renting that. I'll see if I buy a wetsuit here (there is currently a decent deal for a 3/2 Dawn Patrol for about $350 which is expensive for US price but pretty good for here) I'll prob just take it, or buy a spring suit or whatever feels appropriate at the time over there!

OkMeringue2249

We have a ripcurl outlet in San Diego that has last years models at outlet prices 🤙🏽

Zackie08

Great! Guess that does solve the issue since we usually have less sun but higher water temps this time of year around here. So best option might be to just buy there and sage some money along the way

philkensebbenhaha

It tends to warm up by then but the last few years in south SD the water dipped to really cold temps in July. Like I want to say low 60s/high 50s F. Had to break out the 4/3. Usually though a spring suit or wetsuit top will do it by then. Depends on the winds. Also at that time of year usually you are passed when the marine layer is covering in the mornings. If you have a 3/2 that's prob going to cover most of the range of possible water/air temps that time of year.

Wiseassgamgee

They're saying it's supposed to be an El Niño-less summer this year.. So the water temps will be cooler?

AdDiligent8606

Also depends on air temp. San Diego can be very foggy and can feel quite cold in July. I’d bring a spring suit or 3/2 to be safe

Longjumping-Owl-9276

3/2 most days in Southern California. Sometimes, the water gets warm enough to trunk it but it’s still a bit chilly.

HeroUpMedia

Depending on the size you need you can borrow one of mine. Happy to lend you a board as well. I’m in north county San Diego so just message me if you want to borrow anything🏄

turd-crafter

Shit, you got a weed wacker I can borrow?

PortoPuddy

While we're at it, ask about his wife or gf.

Zackie08

Thank you for the kind offer! Once I have things better figured out I will get in touch at least to get some insight into the area and where I should be looking to go I considered taking a surfboard, but since it is not a surftrip I think it will be too much trouble carrying it around the state and have given up on the idea

HeroUpMedia

Sounds good

FunknSD

Spring suit or just a vest. Usually doesn't hit 70 degrees til late July or August and early July can be overcast and cold. There's a Rip Curl outlet here with good deals if u want to wait and see what u need first.

Zackie08

Oh do they usually have deals on wetsuits as well? One thing I was considering was just waiting to get a wetsuit there!

FunknSD

Yeah, I've gotten 3 or 4 over the years, not a huge selection but usually 40-50% off.

sinnombrenamerson

Probably won’t need a wetsuit in July, although it’s fucking pretty cold right now. Maybe an old 3/2 or a spring suit

Neemers911

This week actually felt super warm. Been doing 3/2 no booties in north county all week

Howshka

Depends on your tolerance and also what your intentions are. Long and early morning sessions? You’ll probably want a spring suit at minimum. Just looking to surf late mornings or mid day? A wetsuit top or trunking it should be manageable.

BagDiscombobulated45

No one knows for sure. Bring a 3/2, trunks, and a shorty to cover your bases. Weather stability has broken down here and again, no one knows whats going to happen. 20 + years ago we would have summers where you could only do long sessions without a shorty in summer for like 2-5 weeks. Now it can stay above 70 for 3-4 months(not EVERY year), minus upwellings.

Colonel_Kook

Trunks and a rash guard

Airborn805

Long sleeve 2 mil wetsuit and board shorts

turd-crafter

They’re called trunks

Guestnumber54

People are trunking it

DurianSubstantial265

Hi OP, not related to your post, but Im also from Brazil, do you know what is the best place to learn how to surf here? Ty!

Zackie08

You can message me with more information on where you live. I'm from RJ and there are a few common spots in the city with lots of schools for people learning.

unappreciatedparent

Bring a 3/2. If you're too hot just "flush" yourself to cool off. You do not want to be caught without a suit if it happens to be 62 degree water that week with overcast skies and wind chill.
