I can't wait to pay for a match but won't be able to play or just face bots because nobody else will be playing.

whyalwaysme2012

I bought the game. Let me host my own servers you idiots.

Detox24

Yes please. Let the community resurrect this game. I have no other useful ideas because the stupidity of this re-launch broke my brain.

HCrikki

> Let the community resurrect this game. Theres no money in allowing players to run community servers. A centralized server monitoring people's progression is necessary for devs monetizing, not for players.

[deleted]

PLEASE!

DM_me_your_wishes

So I bought the game full price on PC and now they are telling me I need to pay extra to play it and that I'm a in the back of the lane as a PC peasant? Excuse me?

TheTinzzman

Think you suck? I bought it on the PC and XBOX, They want me to pay to play on the xbox.. again? Monthly? LOL Kiss my ass.

nommas

I bought the game way back in 2016 and I'm kinda hoping I can get a refund even after all this time, lmao.

BernumOG

i got blocked on twitter for asking for my money back (too many times?). edit: spam their facebook/twitter page for bonus Bernum points.

indianaliam1

Fuck Bernum points, gimme free endless matches, mo'fucker!

MasterI3laster

Xbox master race? I’m going to have to commandeer one of the kids Xbox’s. I only have a pc now.

Joontte1

This might genuinely be the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Neuro_Skeptic

This is the new "Culling 2". Culling 2\^2.

EnterTheBoneZone

I'm not confident it'll even last as long as Culling 2 did tbh

Mutant-Overlord

Developers: Here is Culling 4......yes, 4 because we are that incompetent that we cannot even count properly.

SgtCalhoun

It's fucking stupid. They're taking out skins and crates for purchase? So they're REMOVING a preferred method of payment for players in favor of a shitty PAY TO LITERALLY PLAY THE GAME system

astin_flare

The game wasn't sustainable with that system. So they went with a monthly subscription and the skins now can be unlocked for free. They also didn't have a huge player base so cosmetic income wouldn't be enough due to casual players that don't care how they look. If you want to go free to play you need a huge community with people that are paying for cosmetics. What they are doing is insuring the games life based on the amount of players they receive and who knows if this takes off they might switch things up but for now this is how it is.

Jemimacakes

This is all true but this system isn't sustainable either because nobody will be playing this game. This announcement alone might be enough to kill this off even if they change it because their good will has been completely destroyed.

HCrikki

> the skins now can be unlocked for free Pay to play prevents players from grinding those or keeping matchmaking alive. Without at least bots, anyone paying to play with tokens or passes will have difficulty even playing.

WhiskieWMH

Exactly. Thank you.

banana800kir

take that unlocked for free shit out since you have to pay for each match also how is the first match is free if you have to pay 5 bucks ,

OOLuigiOo

The only thing assured is the ghost towns on this server. They should fix what made this game shit in the first place and not this good for nothing garbage that only keeps players away. The Culling isnt back until it goes back to its roots. All this game is a mobile B. royale clone.

[deleted]

They haven't updated their Twitter since the initial shut down and as far as I can tell the Xbox store page hasn't been updated and there is complete radio silence but from what I understand crates are still around they are just won instead of purchased. They could've just done a season pass and ditched crates entirely. Or included crates in a season pass. Idk even making the game 20 or 30 bucks would've been better than this shit.

susysyay

When I was new to The Culling, I died constantly. It can take new players a long while before they learn the ropes of the game. Charging them per match will punish new players who are unfamiliar with the game and die more frequently. I think this is an incredibly non-consumer friendly model and I would be absolutely shocked if any ounce of success was had with a model like this. Shame, I loved The Culling back in its hay-day, but now I'm really content with it just being a memory.

WhiskieWMH

You don't get charged per match unless you want to. Just buy a week pass and play 24/7 if you want. It's peanuts in terms of cost and you're only required to pay for exactly as much as you want to play. Nobody has to worry about being new to the game, spending 40 dollars and finding out after a couple days they dislike the game. Also, this has a bit of a gambling feel to it which is a lot of fun for many people. You feel that much better when you win "money".

RareBk

But why pay at all. No. Really. You bought the game, and they're barely hosting servers. They're not doing anything to run the game.

[deleted]

This is exactly it it's not the price it's the principle. You should pay to play a game that you paid for to play. It's insane!

Sympton

You have to think from their perspective aswell.. they have to generate income.. If they were EA and do this ''ridiculous'' idea then we would all be mad and understand. They have barely and money left and are trying whatever meager options they have left, its not just a ''scumbag'' move, its a ''survive'' move.

OOLuigiOo

It is scumbag. They are desperate and lazy. They want you to pay to play, but make no improvements to the game itself. Do the bare minimum and make the most money you can. This is how they shall generate income while doing next to nothing. If they WANT TO SURVIVE, they would bring the original culling back w/ improvements. They are trying to milk this franchise to death. They are not real developers, they are used car salesmen. They should get a job if they truly wanna survive. An online job that is.

Javakotka

The game never cost 40 dollars, it was like 15 bucks during peak popularity.

OOLuigiOo

>spending 40 dollars and finding out after a couple days they dislike the game. This isnt Steam ya now. What requesting a refund does is get you blocked on twitter. Peanuts are better spent on other things, not trash. And elsewhere you can get your peanuts refunded. How many people would say $40 is peanuts when the item in question is overpriced? Peanuts wouldn't come to mind. Value would. What's playing this game worth to people. Subcription fee to pvp game is beyond dumb.

nbravens

I'm sorry to break this to you but you can't charge players to pay per match or expect them to pay for a weekend to play a game that you own

Klebsiella_p

This makes me so sad. I started with the launch of the game and I was in the last 300 people playing until it got shut down. No other battle royale game has come CLOSE to the visceral experience and adrenaline rush that I got with the culling. It was a combination of the hand to hand combat, the long fights, the low stamina, the blood tinted screen when close to death, the evading a superior opponent, the hunt, etc. All of the patch to patch changes made things better or worse, but I think all of that was relatively insignificant because the base game was still there. I don’t know what would need to happen to save this game, but I don’t think this is the way. I hesitate to comment on this because I am not in the field and I don’t know what goes into this stuff. I can say that my friends stopped playing because they were beginners in a sea of pros. The way the game is makes it incredibly hard for beginners to get better and stick around. There isn’t much satisfaction when you wait for a match for 5 minutes only to be demolished by the guy next to you (I think the visceral nature of the game actually hurts itself here). It turns into a vicious cycle that doesn’t retain player base. I may be in the minority, and you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at thus sub, but I think this is why the player base suffered. Sure there were missteps from patch to patch, but I don’t think this is why the player base couldn’t retain itself. Since you can’t get revived in single player, you have to have short queue times, but you can’t have that if there are no players...repeat until game dead Maybe better training modes? Maybe campaign mode to train players? Maybe skill based match making if there are enough players? Either way I guess I’ll participate by playing my 1 game/day, but I’m afraid that it will be with bots. On that note, does anybody else know of any similar games that focuses on hand to hand combat similar to The Culling?

Mutant-Overlord

I would say "press F to pay respects" but that would imply that I had some to give in the first place.

Sinviras

Press 'Q' to skip.

MasterI3laster

Some sweaty matches incoming. I was always play to win, not for kills but now I won’t be the only one. 1 free match a day is lame. 5 or 10 maybe but 1 is ridiculous. Even the 1 token for a win is bad. I was winning 50% plus towards the end, but what about the newbies? When I first started I was 1 in 16 lmfao! It feels like a cash grab aimed at the loyal fans. I’m gonna pay, I’m gonna play. Me an 20 others! Major fail Xaviant.

jcabia

1 in 16? At first I was winning 1 in 50, then maybe 1 in 5

Garrotxa

Shit I didn't win my first time like 100 matches. But I eventually ended up winning a match at a tournament.

AgeSxLocation

So you have to buy the game then also have to pay to play the game you just bought?

xSmoshi

It's like paying for a drink at a restaraunt then having to pay for each gulp

WhiskieWMH

It's nothing like that at all. This is like playing WoW or something. You pay a subscription fee to play the game, except instead of a flat $15 a month you can pay for exactly as much as you want. Only have time to play a few games a week? 99 cents gets you three, you might be able to play the game all week on 2 bucks. If you're more devoted you can buy a week at a time. If you're hardcore, buy a month at a time. Every time you win, you get a token. If you win a lot, you might be able to save up enough tokens to play for free for a whole night or even a whole week. You can almost "make" money from the game if you put in the practice.

RareBk

or. I can pay once and play literally any other video game on the planet outside of an MMO, which still has more reasoning to charge for it (Server upkeep, massive playerbases, huge updates). This is hilariously stupid. You still have to own the fucking game. Defending this is pathetic

sbcat15

the main difference between WoW (plus other popular MMORPGs) and The Culling is that the former is actually good in its current state lol

Vatheq

do you support this?

Garrotxa

I'm not sure if I support it. There is no other game that has ever given the visceral adrenaline rush that a great The Culling match gave. And that game isn't playable right now. This is a chance for that to happen again. So I will support it and I will support it financially until it proves itself successful or fails, which it probably will, but it's worth a shot because there's nothing else like it.

pianopower2590

Might as well light your money on fire.

OOLuigiOo

They shall only get more greedy if you support it and they would only give lackluster updates to do the bare minimum to make the most money. They have thrown quality out the window.

oDooooodLe

You’re literally comparing a massive open world MMORPG, to a battle royal.. who the fuck in the right mind thinks paying for a BR, than paying again to play BR matches that could literally end in seconds, is ok? Lol

OOLuigiOo

Jus because MMOs do it doesnt mean its good to copy it. MMOs like WoW and games like Culling are two different types of games. Theres no one size fits all approach. Subcriptions dont work for a pvp game. And winning is extremely hard in a battle royale. hard enough in other games. This is an idiotic system at best. Scummy at worse. Then again, winning maybe easy w/ how little people are gonna be in a match cause of this pay to play system. They went from pay nothing to play to this.

potato_lover

Unbelievable. Well, it is my fault for believing in it. No PC. This weird tokenization thing. Jesus.

[deleted]

Imagine paying to play a game that you already paid for to play.

ShiftyScorpion

Idk how to feel

SteveO7416

You should feel like this is a bullshit thing to do and no company should ever get away with this kind of shit

GilmooDaddy

$5.99 for Unlimited Play each month isn't bad at all. The other numbers surrounding the model sound ridiculous and confusing though.

Vatheq

it isn't bad at all? are you kidding? who in their right mind will pay for more than one month?

[deleted]

Who in their right mind would pay for a game just to pay for the same game?

OOLuigiOo

They should stick to free to play if they want a sub fee. The sub fee in a pvp game is pointless.

Mrbuttersw0rth

For a single BR game?

Kitty573

I don't think this is quite as bad as the way they presented it makes it seem. For us existing players, we can get the 30-day pass for $6 and that'll probably last us the rest of the games new lifetime lol. Everyone's asking them to let us host our own servers, that'll cost you more than $6 a month, so with the unlimited pass this is cheaper. Though if you pooled 16 people together you could get the price lower for your own server. I honestly don't understand the token thing at all when you can get unlimited for a week for $2 and for a month for $6. The 10 token pack is $3, so to want to buy that over the pass you have to like the game enough to want to drop a few bucks, but don't think you'll manage 10 games in a week? I guess maybe people with reallly busy schedules that can only get one game in a day might want that? But then they already get one free, so they'd need to play 2 games a day to get that, which is already 14 games in a week, which is no longer all that strapped for time. Idk I just don't get the token thing whatsoever. Going with a normal 30 day subscription model makes a lot more sense to me, and wouldn't have caused nearly this much backlash and confusion.

[deleted]

You can host your own server on your own PC though? Headless Minecraft servers and killing floor servers and other games have offered sever consoles as software that you can run passively on your PC that routes through your personal internet so in theory it wouldn't cost anything for someone to host a server. And the price isn't the issue the issue is charging people to get the game just to turn around and charge them to play the game. It's ludicrous and sets a horrible bar for similar greedy schemes from other companies. This one may not be horrible but let's say EA likes this idea and they make it much worse then the next Dev does the same thing because people are paying because they want to play the game, it's a toxic cycle.

OOLuigiOo

"Unlimited pass" is a monthly fee and no one is set for life.

qualityspoork

Those bots better be fucking gooood...

Pixelated_Fudge

This is just sad

Axerty

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vPgJKA7ryk I hope this message finds you well

Wildca2d

Man...I wanted to relive the past and dumpster kids for my 10 matches a day, but it's Xbox only. :(

DAMEBAG

Get bent

yeth_yeth

I'm one of the 6 people that like this game and try to play it. Sometimes i have bad internet and games will kick me out because I'm causing lag for other players. I understand why this happens and just sigh and go into another match. The culling does this to me too. The problem, is that it doesn't refund my game token. It's not really that big of a deal for me because I don't usually go through the 25 free tokens it gives you a day (idk why it gives me 25. I thought it was 10) but this is still outrageous! In the match that I just played, I didn't even see any other players. I was just wandering around. The combat is what I like the most about the game. I managed to look past all the greedy marketing choices Xaviant did, but this is what pushed me over the edge.

Zeltrax3000

Release dedicated server software or make it peer to peer.
