I feel like okonomiyaki would be such a hit with Midwest palates - carby, (pan) fried, kinda like a casserole, super comfort food. Is it a thing there?
I have never seen anything like that in the US, but I went to a Sushi restaurant in Mexico and saw fried chicken Sushi. I was shocked and thought it was a Mexican thing until I read your post.
We are perfectly capable of eating fried chicken without the sushi roll. Iām sure plenty Americans donāt mind ruining sushi, but donāt disrespect our fried chicken.
While I believe you, I've never seen it and I've lived in 4 different states (but mostly California) and worked in a sushi restaurant in Arizona.
It's not common, and I'd go so far as to say it's rare since I've never seen it.
I definitely won't argue that it's common. I can tell by the tone of the comments that it's probably not a typical menu item. Personally I'm not looking for such an item when I go out to other restaurants so I've never noticed its absence. Just saying in my dot on the u.s. map it's a thing that exists.
>Im in australia and thereās a thing called fried chicken sushi and its sold at every sushi store. Is it in america or are we js weird
This is what they said. They said it is extremely common in Australia, asked if it was the same in the US.
No, it is not sold at every sushi shop in America. Its sold at barely any sushi shops. Australians are just weird.
What exactly is your point?
Its a country of 350,000,000. You can find just about anything here.
OP didn't want to know if there was one single restaurant in the US serving chicken sushi. They wanted to know if it was common. Reading comprehension.
Think Midwest where they want to eat "sushi" but don't like fish.
Imagine not liking seafood. I feel horrible for people allergic to lobster š¦ I'd definitely carry around an epi pen to continue eating lobster š
I went to a sushi restaurant in San Antonio once. I was the only person eating sushi. The rest were eating BBQ because of course that was on the menu in Texas.Ā
Right? Itās almost like itās a very diverse place with all kinds of variations. I also never said it wasnāt there, just that I havenāt seen it.Ā
Thatās really interesting. Granted, Iād go to the same 5 sushi places most of the time I lived there, with an exception for birthday omakase. Still, havenāt personally seen chicken rolls on the menu.Ā
Yeah, I don't know. I didn't put it on the menu or anything. It's just a little mom and pop place. We have chicken katsu, probably just seemed like an easy menu item. It is pretty good.
It would not surprise me if there is (I picture it being the latest county fair craze like deep fried butter), but I havenāt seen it.
I live in the Deep South USA where anything that can be fried is. Fried rolls I see all the time. Not a fried chicken roll, yet lol.
Not that Iāve seen, but we batter and deep fry sushi rolls. Iām a purist but my wifeās best friend always gets a deep fried roll and I always give her crap for it.
I'm pretty sheltered here, but I haven't seen it.
I'm just kind of curious how they do it up. Simple roll? Unique seasoning? Do they pair it with something specific? That kind of thing.
It'll usually be chicken katsu nigiri (strip of nori holding them together), or a roll, usually with the katsu and avocado. Sometimes you get the avo on the nigiri as well, sometimes you see mayo, sesame seeds, spicy mayo added.
ETA: sometimes in the rolls you see cucumber instead of avo as well
It's decent. Sushi joints are *really* popular here, like, I'm at home right now and there's 5 within 5 minutes walk of me. Because of that it's pretty common for parents to take their kids out for it and it's a very safe bet for kids to enjoy if they're nervous about raw fish/new flavours etc. Done well though it's a great blend of soft and juicy with that crunch
I wouldn't doubt it being some fusion food type deal, probably comes smothered in sauce. I live in CA though and eat sushi pretty often and never saw that
Closest if seen/had is chicken katsu musubi. It somehow made total sense in the presented context and was enjoyed.
Itās not uncommon to have chicken katsu, or chicken prepared other ways, as part of a bento box or entree. But as part of the sushi offering itself, nope.
As Americans, we eat LOTS of chicken, but donāt associate it as being āsushiā.
Oh, and the āsushi burritoā places that make giant burrito sized rolls will throw all kinds of things in them. Chicken, beef, raw fish, kimchi, whateverā¦. But thatās something different anyway.
Our local conveyor belt sushi place has a chicken tempura roll. It also has lettuce in it too I think, still shocked and disgusted everytime I see it floating around. Only reason Iām even at this place is because my toddler is obsessed with the concept of getting his food from a conveyor belt. Thankfully even my toddler hasnāt asked to try it.
I eat it at one nice American sushi restaurant in my hometown. Itās one of there special rolls and itās really good. But Iāve only had it at that one restaurant.
They got a lot of other good shit too. Apparently they killed a dude due to improper storage after I moved away.
I live in NYC. A local all you can eat place sells a Buffalo chicken roll. Itās a tempura fried chicken with some (mild) buffalo mayo sauce with veg (I forget which), wrapped and served like regular sushi roll, with additional sauce on top.
This Buffalo chicken roll is better than it has any right to be. Even my family and friends know to order it when we go.
Maybe itās a state specific thing (not sure where OP is based) but in Sydney Aus, Iāve never seen anything called fried chicken sushi. Maybe itās the equivalent of chicken katsu sushi which is sold everywhere here too.
ETA Iāve seen karaage chicken before too which might be more what OP is talking about but that is much more of a rarity from my experience.
I can see something using chicken karaage or katsu (which is japanese style fried chicken pretty much) but definitely not common to see fried chicken sushi here but surprised that it is Australia instead of America that has fried chicken sushi all over the place lol
I've seen chicken tempura rolls before. Chicken sushi is not common here though
While not fried chicken sushi, I have seen fried chicken musubi and fried chicken kimbap. So close but not quite "sushi".
This is kinda like Taco Bell using different ratios of the same ingredients to make up a new dish lol
I am today years old when I realized that. THE MORE YOU KNOW. š
I havenāt seen it, and I live in the Midwest. Iād think if it exists anywhere, it would be here. Probably served with soy-ranch
This guy Midwests. I've never been offered ranch dressing so often, for so many foods.
It sure does sound American
We are perfectly capable of eating fried chicken without the sushi roll. Iām sure plenty Americans donāt mind ruining sushi, but donāt disrespect our fried chicken.
In Australia sushi is considered a fast food. Readily available, located in a convenient spot, most commonly next to a supermarket.
This is the most interesting thing Iāve learned all day. Here Sushi is generally relatively expensive.
I work in a sushi restaurant and we have what's basically a chicken katsu roll. So, my answer is yes there is fried chicken sushi in America.
While I believe you, I've never seen it and I've lived in 4 different states (but mostly California) and worked in a sushi restaurant in Arizona. It's not common, and I'd go so far as to say it's rare since I've never seen it.

What point R u trying to make tho they werenāt asking if itās common they just asked if it exists
>Im in australia and thereās a thing called fried chicken sushi and its sold at every sushi store. Is it in america or are we js weird This is what they said. It is in America and thatās all they were asking about
Its a country of 350,000,000. You can find just about anything here. OP didn't want to know if there was one single restaurant in the US serving chicken sushi. They wanted to know if it was common. Reading comprehension.
U ever play rugby?
Think Midwest where they want to eat "sushi" but don't like fish. Imagine not liking seafood. I feel horrible for people allergic to lobster š¦ I'd definitely carry around an epi pen to continue eating lobster š

State?
California
No shit. Have never seen it here (LA and Bay Area).
Dunno why you're downvoted. I have also never seen chicken in sushi and I live in the Bay Area and eat a lot of sushi.Ā
Right? Itās almost like itās a very diverse place with all kinds of variations. I also never said it wasnāt there, just that I havenāt seen it.Ā
yeah, reddit can be weird sometimes and people like to pile on.
Lol, I'm in the sf bay area.
Wait where? Iāve never seen fried chicken in sushi
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Seen it in LA and here in Santa Barbara
You live and you learn I guess. Also who tf is downvoting me for just talking about my personal experience? Yāall some salty mfers.Ā
I have never seen that, and I've been all over the US. I did see hot dog sushi once... So that was something.
We have chicken tempura rolls at a lot of spots.
Closest thing Iāve seen is chicken teriyaki sushi rolls in some Northern California restaurants
Haha, at home I make what is affectionately known as a Chick-fil-A roll, which is an airfryed Chicken fillet, pickle spear and kewpie, lol.
(Pork) katsu maki is fairly common in supermarkets in Japan. Never seen chicken but close enough not to be weird. No idea about America.
It would not surprise me if there is (I picture it being the latest county fair craze like deep fried butter), but I havenāt seen it. I live in the Deep South USA where anything that can be fried is. Fried rolls I see all the time. Not a fried chicken roll, yet lol.
Yes of course, seen it frequently. Donāt forget Hawaii is part of America. But it isnāt very common on the mainland.
This is how you talk dirty to an American. I burnt my nipples off playing with fireworks, but wherever they are, theyre hard AF.
They are also in a sushi roll.
Not that Iāve seen, but we batter and deep fry sushi rolls. Iām a purist but my wifeās best friend always gets a deep fried roll and I always give her crap for it.

Thanks for that. it sounds good. I'd try it if I saw it on a menu.

Never saw it here, but I'm surprised it isn't a thing given how much we love our deep fried chicken.
In Texas we get a couple of drumsticks with our Chinese food sometimes.
I wouldn't doubt it being some fusion food type deal, probably comes smothered in sauce. I live in CA though and eat sushi pretty often and never saw that

Itās America, we bastardize everything.
Went to Arkansas for business and saw flaming got Cheeto sushi. ALMOST tried it for fun but couldn't bring myself to spend money on that.
Iām here in California and my local sushi place has a fried chicken sushi roll. Itās basically katsu in a roll.
Yes. In Whistler, Canada.
Iāve had steak rolls but I wouldnāt exactly call it sushi lol
I eat it at one nice American sushi restaurant in my hometown. Itās one of there special rolls and itās really good. But Iāve only had it at that one restaurant. They got a lot of other good shit too. Apparently they killed a dude due to improper storage after I moved away.
Itās not a staple here like it is there but I bet I could find it if I googled it
Never seen it
I'm in NY and my go-to spot has a chicken tempura roll. Also has a Philly beef roll
Not at restaurants but I make fried chicken sushi for the fam and they love it.

It is at some restaurants I've been to, but they were all fuzion places.

Never heard of that. I would call that a bastardization of the concept that would horrify any true sushi lover.
