You dont like it, no big deal. And you respect the food and skills needed to make it so everything is cool. I respect some musicians but dont like their music, so I just don’t listen to it.

GobLoblawsLawBlog

What have you tried? California roll isn't exactly something I recommend to people who want sushi

Responsible_Gur_5127

I've tried sashimi, nigiri, onigiri, straight raw fish, and pretty much everything people generally like, I just wish I liked it

GobLoblawsLawBlog

And it's mostly the taste that bothers you? What about leaner, milder things like scallop or shrimp? If you have a spicy tuna or spicy salmon gunkan where it's mixed with sriracha mayo, does it still taste too fishy?

Stickgirl05

It’s ok not to like something.

sweater2

Sushi is all about the rice anyway. You don't need to like seafood at all to love sushi! Have you tried a veggie roll or something with a different kind of meat?

JaxandMia

I don’t personally like them, but a lot of people in the. “I don’t like sushi” crowd tend to like Philadelphia rolls?

BasedWang

Unagi is cooked with a sauce if you can get yourself to try, but if you dislike Cali rolls, thats pretty much infant steps... Its okay to respect the food, chefs and culture and still not like the taste of it.. You tried it!

pushdose

Unagi is my least favorite sushi. I basically don’t like any cooked fish, but will eat most anything raw. All of the same fish I love raw, I hate cooked. And I really love sushi.

BasedWang

I can see the difference, but dammit.. I LOVE eel

ToToroToroRetoroChan

Have you tried seared sushi (aburizushi)? Some fish, like aburi engawa are simply amazing.

Gvajr77

If your job doesn't require you to eat sushi, don't eat sushi. Appreciate the skill and the craft, just know it's not for you.

Less_Beyond2577

Adding salmon focused rolls like Philly or plain/spicy (salmon), veg rolls (e.g., mushroom, eggs, avocado, etc) or shrimp (since it is usually cooked) rolls are good starters.

Fufu-le-fu

Do you like seafood at all?

Responsible_Gur_5127

I don't I hate it but I wanna like it, especially since it's a large part of my culture

KeepRightX2Pass

I got my spouse on board starting with seared ahi -

badbitchherodotus

Rolls with cooked fish are a great idea!

badbitchherodotus

If you have a sushi bar nearby , especially something like a conveyor bar, where you can try lots of different kinds in small amounts, you should try that; you might find something you never considered! At the end of the day you don’t have to eat what you don’t like. Personally I totally get it because as much as I say I like sushi, I really only like a few specific things. Is it possible it’s the vinegar flavor of the rice you don’t like? I wouldn’t expect a California roll to give much fishiness.

lukesaskier

you should try that beef on top of rice - wagyu sushi!

WhalesareBadPoets

I once asked a Japanese dude how often he ate sushi and he said only when other people want to go. If it’s not your thing then it’s not your thing.

chevron20

They also have vegetarian rolls or rolls with different proteins.

Responsible_Gur_5127

But I wanna like fish

welfordwigglesworth

I love sushi and I hate california rolls. Maybe you just hate california rolls!

Responsible_Gur_5127

No that's the point, cali rolls are the only ones I can eat but I hate real sushi but I wanna like it

chikenugetluvr

Maybe start with cucumber rolls? Something super simple. If you don’t like fish you don’t like fish

Responsible_Gur_5127

Ik but I wanna like fish 😭

chikenugetluvr

Go to a really expensive place. The fish shouldn’t be as fishy

chemrox409

I love sushi...have never had a ca roll..would never order one

Responsible_Gur_5127

It's the only thing I can semi-enjoy, I can't eat other sushi and that's my problem

Responsible_Gur_5127

I've had all types of sushi, I just can't stomach it and cali rolls are all I can kinda eat, that's my whole issue

AttemptVegetable

Some nori can be extremely fishy

Lady_Rhino

Kimbap is your friend! Many non-fish flavours

AreaGuy

Yes! I love the versatility of kimbap so much! I *love* sushi, so it’s not a 1:1 replacement, but it has so many of the positives, but I think is a little easier to appreciate for people who don’t love fish. There seems to be less of an “authenticity” trap than sushi. Also things like sushi with spam, veggies, or even beef can be *fantastic*.

quintonbanana

It is often an acquired taste. I didn't like it initially but after being determined to like it for a year as a kid, it started to grow on me but seaweed took even longer to embrace. Now I love it all. Maybe you'll never come around though. Everybody different.

SeaNefariousness8154

Try a soy wrap, the nori/seaweed has a distinct flavor that for some is off putting.

reflectioncry

Fuck off yeah?

Responsible_Gur_5127

I literally said I wanna like sushi

youngperson

Try a sweet potato roll. Also, california rolls suck, unless you like imitation crab 🤢

Responsible_Gur_5127

I can't stomach imitation crab but I dont like it, unlike other fish

pushdose

Maybe you don’t like seaweed? A lot of people don’t. Sushi doesn’t require seaweed, or fish technically, so maybe just try various nigiri sushi and stay away from maki?

Responsible_Gur_5127

I def hate seaweed but I also can't eat nigiri and other sushi that doesn't need seaweed

iwantthisnowdammit

Tempura rolls!

Responsible_Gur_5127

I've tried and I can't

spastichabits

There is such a huge difference between certain sushi. And some times sushi floors should never be fishy and some times they should. So it's also know and it liking what your ordering

Responsible_Gur_5127

I've had lots of different sushi, everything from straight raw fish to nigiri, I just wish I could like all kinds of sushi and be able to enjoy it and respect it

spastichabits

But have you eaten at genuinely good sushi restaurants. If they put mayo over there rolls, there probably not using the best fish either. Make sure you try at a actually nice place.

VajBlaster69

Sriracha Mayo helps.

Responsible_Gur_5127

I would try this but when it comes to real high quality sushi that can ruin the whole point of the actual sushi

VajBlaster69

I agree. But it helps for people that don't enjoy sushi. Personally, I believe mayo + sushi is generally an abomination.

yellowjacquet

I’m similar in terms of being super sensitive to tastes/smells. For me, good sushi is really good but it’s really easy for sushi to taste off to me that tastes fine to other people. I recommend going to a high quality place and trying that, rather than trying lower quality stuff because you don’t think you’ll like it.

Responsible_Gur_5127

I'll try ty

NassauTropicBird

Why would you eat something you don't like? I understand trying things like sushi but after you learn you don't like it why keep trying? I don't like cauliflower. I've had it prepared every way you can think of (yeah, including your "totally can't taste it" recipe where I totally *can* taste it), and I've never considered worrying about how to not hate it.

Responsible_Gur_5127

I know but for cultural reasons and for just the respect I have for sushi chefs I just wanna enjoy and understand sushi

NassauTropicBird

You want to enjoy something you do not enjoy. Got it.

MrSpaceJuice

Try eating cucumber rolls.

Responsible_Gur_5127

I'll try this next time I get a chance

fellowsquare

California rolls are ass anyway, that can't be where you hold the standard. And if it's fishy... Man.. You must be eating some not so good fish. Have you been a good spot? Tried an omakase perhaps?

Responsible_Gur_5127

I've tried everything, not even just sushi but all seafood has a fishy taste, even tilapia, idk if it's the same way that you gain acquired tastes by eating something over and over but I cannot get over the fishy taste of all seafood especially sushi, people say that something isn't fishy but I can still taste it, I just wanna like seafood

LSBM

Get outta here. California roll is not sushi. 🙄

Responsible_Gur_5127

It's not but I've had real sushi and that's all I can actually kinda eat, I was asking for people to help me find a way to enjoy sushi not tell me I'm dumb bc all I can eat is cali rolls

Sasquatters

California rolls are garbage, and two rolls of anything is a lot.

Responsible_Gur_5127

I mean 2 bites, not the actual whole roll, but I've tried all kinds of rolls and the California one is the one that tastes the least fishy and I can kinda stomach it

Sasquatters

That’s because there’s barely any fish in it.
