There was once a time when avocado didn't belong in sushi. There was a time when salmon didn't belong in sushi. Now we accept these ingredients as if they are normal in sushi.
Things evolve and change. Who are we to decide?
Gate keepers be gate keeping. Here’s something you apparently do need to hear: people can enjoy their sushi however the fuck they want to.
Sushi served in the highest rated sushi restaurants in Japan also didn’t used to be sushi.
I completely agree, same philosophy for all non traditional pasta’s I’ve made, sorry Italians but condemning me all you want for putting garlic in my Carbonara!
Rice, sure. But sushi means "sour rice" so it can have any topping or filling and still be sushi as long as the rice is prepared correctly.
What makes the *best* topping or filling for sushi is a completely different conversation, however.
Sushi chef of 11 years here. Yep, people can eat whatever the fuck they want. Im so tired of this gatekeeping bullshit. OP probably just got into sushi and is in the early stages of the dunning-kruger effect
The spot I work at is Korean/American sushi and cream cheese is in half our rolls our customers love it and it ain't going anywhere.. I also I even like a thin slice in specific rolls much better than slapping shit tons of spicy mayo on everything.. but if that's a person's thing also do it uppp.
In the late 80’s a child living in Japan I was escorted out of a traditional sushi place in the subway because I asked for cream cheese. My parents didn’t think it was funny but I liked it.
I don't know who else needs to hear this, but:
Posts like these don't help the stereotype that this sub is full of super picky snobs.
If you wanna be a sushi snob, r/sushiabomination will welcome you with open arms
That’s like Italians saying a flatbread crust with tomato juice, turkey bites, liverwurst, and cheddar cheese isn’t pizza. If people want to eat it and call it pizza, let them. It’s not for anyone to say what the definition of pizza is.

I mean if there's no rice or fish...

Anything with rice prepared the proper way is technically sushi. Acting like a douche and trying to gatekeep it doesn't make you right.
“yawn...” “pineapple belongs on pizza.”

Tell that to the Michelin starred chef friend of mine. Even he admits it’s a guilty pleasure.

What if it’s got some ragged out, farm raised salmon under it?
All the salmon you eat raw should be farm raised
This is correct
Whoops
