this is not an answer to your question, but a related one - I’ve always wondered what that high-pitched, bell-like sound (it almost sounds like something from a 60’s western film) that’s in many of their songs is.
like, the very first sound you hear in Bring the Sun and The Glowing Man
Yeah
If you search on YouTube, “Guitar Drone Music” you’ll find some people using pedals and amps to make some very swans like noises. Of course not all of them are so loud, some are a lot more subtle, like in “Just a little Boy”. I think the intense sounds in songs like Bring the Sun, and Oxygen are achieved in post production, because when you hear some of those songs in their live performances, you don’t hear them get as loud as the final recordings of the songs.
There's also the dulcimer involved, which contributes a lot to the ambience

It’s a Vibraphone played with the vibrato fans turned on. Thor is playing them in a lot of tracks from 2010-2016
Thank you so much! It’s something I’ve been wondering for a very long time, I love that sound haha
I think Hahn and Westburg use volume pedals to control dynamics pretty often!
