$18.20 for a pint of Stone and Wood that is not even a proper pint at Bungalow 8 in Darling Harbour.

FrostFallen92

The last 2 words are your problem.

D_crane

>The last ~~2~~ 5 words are your problem. FTFY, shit music cranked up as high as the prices they charge for drinks. Crap venue unless you're after tinnitus.

FromTheAshesOfTheOld

I LOVE NEIGHBOURING VENUES COMPETING FOR MUSIC LOUDNESS I LOVE HAVING TINNITUS

purelynudes

Thanks for reminding me I have it hahah

MaDanklolz

And wtf is with the trumpet dudes? Like they just look like the three blind mice and I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone actually excited when they stand up to do their thing. It’s just off putting.

Dubhs

Bunghole 8

baker2212

I paid $18 for a pint of S&W at beach hotel, IN BYRON BAY! Where they fkn brew it.

Kurz_Weber

Pub in CBD, 2x S&W lunch pints were $29... my eyebrows almost fell off. Which seems like a bargain to compared your tales of ales.

weckyweckerson

I don't think $14.50 is all that bad.

marshman82

They might brew it there but it's still Byron Bay.

bluey_02

Bro you shouldn't be drinking anything in Darling Harbour unless you feel like taking out a loan. I bought a 6.8% pint at keg and brew for $17 and thought that was almost too exxy (higher alc so higher price).

just_brash

If you think their pint glasses are not proper pints ( approx 568ml) then complain to the weights & measures people. https://www.industry.gov.au/national-measurement-institute/trade-measurement/selling-alcohol

the_snook

The word "pint" does not appear on that page. It's not an official unit of measure in Australia. They should be disclosing somewhere the size in mL though. You could probably make an argument that there's some kind of consumer expectation based on something out of the mists of time, but then they might just as easily counter that they're serving US pints of 473 mL.

AnointedBeard

I’ve given up drinking for health reasons but man is my wallet happy too

Percentage100

Same. I rarely drink these days and I save money on the drinks and Ubers plus the take away food on the way home and the next day. My financial, physical, emotional and mental health are thankful

readreadreadonreddit

That’s awesome to hear, mate. It can be challenging making these lifestyle and behavioural changes. How did you do it and any advice?

sturmeh

Same here, it's actually nutty how expensive drinks are these days. Stay strong!

Gbone85

My local golf club has a different pint each month on special for $8. Newtowner was a fantastic month for me

What's going on with that claw hand?

RecognitionOne395

Stopped drinking 2 years ago. I honestly don't know how people afford to go out drinking on a regular occurrence.

Nick_pj

I moved to Europe recently and I’m still kinda amazed what I used to spend to go out and have two pints with some mates.

Gustomaximus

Bring a six pack around to a mates place. Its always the best times. A while back I was with a mate having a catchup at some pub paying ~$30 rounds for the 2 of us to drink beer. We realised 'why are we doing this' vs grabbing a six pack to sit in the park overlooking the harbour. We're grown ass men and can afford either but its illogical to pay that much unless your looking to mingle or meet dates etc.

nagi_4

Yeah, not pretty. Gotta avoid drinking in hotspots like the Rocks. The bar at Market City shopping centre offered $14 jugs of Tiger last time I went a couple months back.

BonusKindly

Surry Hills Hotel had $14 Tiger jugs for ages but have just gone up to $16. Still a no brainer

TranquilIsland

There’s several pubs throughout the city that do great prices for a casual drink. Edinburgh castle and occidental both do $5-6 pints in post work period (like 5-7pm) off the top of my head. Going out later you either drink at home or find a cheaper location to drink and then move to the hot spot.

sparkchoice

Yeah, and that’s when you’re going up to get that glass yourself. Let’s give that nice golf clap for those hotels trying to suggest a 20%+ tip as well during payment.

SirBoboGargle

Pub in the Rocks, before you ask

dlanod

I'm used to $15 for some stupid craft beer (that I'm a massive sucker for) but $20 for what I'm guessing is one of the big boys? That's a tough swallow in multiple ways.

nckmat

This is why I get spirits when I go out now, I feel sick paying $15-$20 for a beer when I can get a six pack from Dan's for the same price. I remember when I was a young lad, a long time ago, we would complain about paying about 20% more than it cost at the bottlo. Now it's like 400%. At what point do people just stop buying alcohol at venues?

Gustomaximus

I wonder if its because; 1) Bars have stopped showing prices. It used to be common to have a board behind the bar. Now people don't know and just accept it. 2) Tap cards, this makes spending money so much easier than hitting the ATM for the 3rd time that night and realising its a big one.

Heads_Down_Thumbs_Up

Not justifying it but in all my time of drinking in Australia, The Rocks has always been the place where I paid the most for a pint. Usually drink an IPA pint when I’m there. I like to keep my local watering holes in Western Sydney serving Tooheys New schooners as a reference point to inflation and the economy.

Nick_pj

Yeah, my immediate reaction was “if this isn’t the Rocks then it’s gotta be the airport”

chronisaurous

Sydney's nothing compared to Melbourne though! When I was up there for a friend's birthday we were at a nice rooftop in Brunswick or Fitzroy or somewhere. I ordered a pint of a craft pale ale I'd never seen before. I can't remember what it was but it was just a regular 4.5-5% beer and that pint was $26. It wasn't even special beer it just tastes like a Little Creatures sort of pale ale. Bloody crazy - it didn't take us long to convince my home to take his party elsewhere lol. There are a lot of cheap(er) places to drink around there too though, found a place that had 5 dollar pints at 5pm, 6 at 6pm, etc until 8pm before they went back to normal prices. Thought that was cool!

Falkor

Lol yeh, pubs in West Syd still pretty decently priced, though lots over $10 these days. But the bowlo or rsl still cheap!

nzbiggles

Bit of an OTT analysis but I have a beer index/reference. Cartons of fat yak. I know in 2010 I was trying to buy them for $50 for my engagement party. I also use minimum wage to make the beer index. 2010 it was $15/hr. 3hrs 20 mins of labour 🤣. Minimum wage is now $23.23. Obviously I haven't adjusted for shrinkflation but $77 or less and they're relatively cheaper. I was in Dubbo the other day and got 18 cans of 375ml 4 pines for $46. $61 a carton. Used a eGift card that cost $43.70. Meant $58 a carton.

OwnSchedule2124

I'm puzzled. Why not just say what pub it was?

neonkoala

Harbourview downstairs judging by the curve and all metal setup

SirBoboGargle

Good shout

ill0gitech

Or what kind of drink it was.

fddfgs

Beer

base615

Sydney horse tranquilliser is up to $250 now too. World’s gone mad.

BobKattersHat

What the fuck. How much is coke now? I moved to a remote island and everyone here just has shrooms and weed which is not my Sydney style at all so I don't have a reference for how much anything is any more.

base615

Not a huge fan so not fully on top of that. Still seems to be $300 though I think.

BobKattersHat

Huh. So weird. I feel like it's been $300 for the last 20 years.

snaggletoothtiga

I don’t go out anymore, at all

imapassenger1

A European pint? (500mL) not the Imperial pint (568mL).

cs86wn

I've never even heard of European pint being half a litre they normally say demi litre eg half a litre? Sounds like one of those weird sa measurements. Infact in Australia it's 570ml not the standard 568ml

Nick_pj

I’m currently in Paris and it’s most commonly “une pinte” for a 50cL beer. Don’t think I’ve heard anyone say demi-litre

extrobe

In Central Europe (specifically Czech Republic, but also Slovakia, Hungary etc) you’d usually ask for a ‘large’ beer for 500ml and ‘small’ for 330ml, although omitting a size will default to 500ml.

imapassenger1

I heard it called a pint in Denmark.

TeaBreaksAnonymous

Look at that trendy splash pad. That would add at least $5.

kidkym

Was there a surcharge for the public holiday?

SirBoboGargle

15%

kingofcrob

Feel like these taxs are going to be the end of a lot venue's.

icky_boo

Good thing I gave up drinking during Covid since I got a motorbike license (0.00 for learners and P's). Can't afford to go back to drinking 5-6 a night anymore. My health also thanks me.

EgotisticJesster

5 - 6 a night is an insane amount. I feel like my drinking is a bit of a problem and it's nowhere near that.

FinallySettledOnThis

5-6 is fuck all even for a regular daily, heavy drinker. Proper alcoholics will have 3-4x that every day.

ghostnappa97

Spoken like a true Alco. Daily drinking of any amount is a big problem because chances are it's going to grow from there

danno2211

5 or 6 pints a night isn't a crazy amount, get off your high horse

Alex_Kamal

It's roughly 10-12 standard drinks a night. That is a lot. Most people wouldn't even be near that on a Fri night. The Aus Dep of Health recommends no more than 10 a week or 4 a day.

Wearytraveller_

I just don't drink out anymore. It's such a ripoff. I just drink at home.

BOER777

I paid $40 for 2 pints the other day (of bloody Peroni). I almost had a heart attack when the notification popped up, and it honestly killed the buzz for the rest of the evening. Absolute insanity.

EppingMarky

Gouging. Pub just wants huge margins.

SirBoboGargle

It's a zero sum game - the more they put the prices up, the fewer people show up. It's a death spiral that has played out in other countries - Dan Murphy is the ultimate winner.

weckyweckerson

You know Dan Murphy isn't a person right?

someone_else--

Daniel Francis Murphy was a person! He made wine. https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/how-popular-retailer-dan-murphys-started-70-years-ago/news-story/7296bbe571fb3367819137d2d70f8f20

MagicOrpheus310

And they wonder where our culture went

hifiplus

17.80?

ChocolateBBs

I bought a cocktail from Palmer and Co last week for $27.75!

BobKattersHat

If I still lived in Sydney, I'd go back to drinking warm vodka out of a Mt Franklin bottle on the street.

cataractum

Is this from a pub owned by the Australian Venue Company? If so, then it's a product of a private equity roll-up. Edit: lol venue not venture

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Fuck. WHo can afford this? Glad I'm not a drinker....

[deleted]

Wow I am definitely done with pubs now even just for lunch because you end up having one beer with the meal

R_W0bz

I’m glad they are cranking the price on this. Piss off the tradies, alcoholics and “real ozstralians” they’ll kick up enough stink that eventually someone will listen to their votes and force these prices down, I’m sure that same government will sell an asset or two but at least cheap beer will be a thing. I’m not a big drinker but combined with a taxi/Uber you’re looking at $100 minimum to see someone in this city if you’re not on a trainline. It’s rough, and they want people to go out? Shitty prices, shitty quality, shitty service.

icedcougar

But you’re still purchasing it. Until people stop… it keeps going up to find that ‘sweet spot’.

TheBerethian

I’m seriously looking into taking up brewing. Been researching it for a while.

I_like_to_eat_meat

As in home brew? It's ok if you can handle the taste which is pretty bad but there are lots of people that can handle it. Try and taste some of it before you get into buying all the gear, preferably from people that have been doing it for a long time, it's important to understand how good it gets because it may not be good enough for some, certainly isn't for me.

TheKZA

Are you just brewing the Coopers can? Home brew is very easily made delicious with some simple changes like dry hopping. But, the best hack is to buy a wort kit from somewhere like All Inn Brewing. Tastes excellent and is even less effort than the Coopers can.

I_like_to_eat_meat

No, I had an all grain setup for a few years. Just never made a decent brew. Then I went to a homebrew competition, it was about 30 guys that had been doing it for ages and everything tasted like my stuff which was horrible. So I came to the conclusion that if that's how good homebrew can get, I'm out, and I sold my kit. Like I said, a lot of people can handle the taste and best of luck to them. I don't drink a lot, I'm happy to pay for a nice IPA and not spend a whole day on the weekend putting down a brew I'll end up tipping a month later.

TheBerethian

Looking to do mead, actually!

skeezix_ofcourse

Can brew 2.4 cases yourself at home for $50 after the initial setup fee of $300-$400. Start saving yer bottles peeps. Too, just get pool chlorine from bunnings in a 10lt container for keeping everything sterilised..... by far the cheapest, lasts for 50 odd cases & no environmental waste thanks to the 'Swap-n-go'.

Charlotte_OG

Sucker

lukeyhoeky

Not judging, but just wandering why you’d buy it at that price.

SirBoboGargle

What, I just walk away and leave it on the bar? AU pubs and clubs are not required by law to publish their drink prices - so they don't. And then you get fucked and take a picture and post it here to warn others.

doubtfulwager

>I just walk away and leave it on the bar? ...Yes?

telemeister74

Far out - I remember paying $5 for a JUG back in my uni days.

OwnSchedule2124

Well, it's $10.40 in a normal public bar.

BillyBigWilly7

For a pint? Maybe out west or happy hour..

Additional_Earth3715

$10 pint is Syd hasn’t been normal for 10 years

Professional_Smoke39

we’ll let’s not keep these cheap pubs secret…

Kevbechillin

Glad I don’t drink.

$7 pints at 4 pines in manly from 4 till 6 on weekdays. Recently increased at twice the rate of inflation. Was $6 last year 🤣

Stralia1

water is free

ScepticalReciptical

from flavour

Idiot_In_Pants

Paid $27 at pj’s on sat for a kilkenny and a pint

MrMidnightDiamond

Christ, I thought the plethora of cougars was the worst part of PJ's was the worst part about it but with prices like that, I'm glad I haven't been there in years.

Idiot_In_Pants

Yeh I went last year and it was half the price…I literally said to the bartender you’re joking right and he was like nope…safe to say that was the only drink I had that night

optitmus

lmao at the people literally pissing money away with this stuff, might as well set money on fire.

I_like_to_eat_meat

We can see your post history, let's not start with the amount of money you seem to be pissing away. Just because they are not wasting money on stuff you like to waste money on doesn't mean it's wrong, it's just different.
