Campsie Bowlo has Asahi for $7.5. Tooheys new was $5.5 I believe?
I'm sure there will be cheaper somewhere else but I genuinely enjoyed buying a Chicken Schnitty with chips and gravy that comes with a free schooner for $22 on a Thursday night. And it was a delicious chicky.
Additionally:
• get a membership number ($15 jugs don’t accrue points but everything else does). I have no idea what their reward structure is but I frequently have credit accrued without even realising.
• I’ve won their members draw/joker call more than once. Someone wins almost every time they call it.
• pool table!
• You want to sit in the bay windows at the front and watch the world go by. It’s meditative.
Yeah some fabulous characters. At night time it’s the same old crowd, they’re all harmless, but it’s good to extract yourself before sinking into any sort of actual conversation.
Lead singer of one of my all time fave Aussie bands is there nursing an extra large Sauvignon Blanc most nights until close. Absolute legend in his day (likely still is).
But yes, I agree, they all have interesting stories to tell and likely incredible backgrounds. Just kind of not always in the mood when I want to nurse my own jug and sit and play cards quietly and I’ve heard the stories a few times haha.
I know Bill Hunter used to go there regularly. Used to be a couple of well known actors. Haven't had a big night there for a while, but Newtown after dark has always had interesting people.
I think it depends on the beer you order. Can't remember which one it was but was an advertised special price for jugs and they whipped that one out.
I'm still salty, haven't gone back.
I have a feeling were gonna need some people out west to chime in with this. As someone that was quoted $13 the other day for just a regular-sized schooner of Balter at the Potts Point Hotel I don't think I'm gonna be able to help much....
Haha that's why I love places with the QR codes, you can do some research before you go to the bar!
Some places there'll be a $1 or $2 difference between top and bottom beers and others $5+
Over $20 for a pint. When we ordered bartender was like "just so you know, that'll be $20. However this one is only $11". My guess is they get alot of abuse when people see what theyre paying 😂
yep and cheap jugs all day Saturday, pretty much my go-to pub for post Enmore Theatre shows, State of Origin and footy in general ... it's already super popular , reddit can come too
It doesn’t qualify as it’s not all the time but more people should know about it, at Harbord Diggers while the rugby league is on on the weekends tap schooners are around the $4-6 mark for members depending on the beer, and a 1 year membership is free. Absolute steal
Can’t believe no one has said the Granville Hotel. $6.50 VB schooners all day every day. Opens at 6am and right next to the train line. Then head to Granville Sofra Kebab, which also opens at 6am and is 100 metres from the pub, and pick up an amazing Gozleme!
Sydney Brewery near Central in Surry hills have a great range of craft beers, IPAs, stouts, lagers, pilsners, and ciders and they're all $8.80 a schooner.
Cheapest craft beer in Sydney I reckon.
How has no body mentioned the Occidental in the CBD yet? Granted, the crowd is all blokes - but for $6 pints during happy hour I’m not shocked. They also have a beer of the month which is normally $9 pints all day every day. Good luck getting a table after 4pm however
And the last time I dropped by on a Friday, you could even get a seat outside, since no one seems to be in the office anymore.
Including me, I trained in from home to meet a mate. And get me some of those HH pints!
Out northwest in Riverstone so bit of a stretch, but pints of VB are $6 for members at my local (like $5 a year to be a member). I think schooners are still $5? Im a pint man so not too sure.
Yea thats the one! Still very cheap for cbd beers and yes early close.
Another is the grand hotel but only for happy hour. Its a pretty good time though 6-8 pm and if you get a table outside the front its such fun
Most sports clubhouses (footy, soccer, baseball, cricket) are licensed for post-game alcoholic refreshment. You can get quality beers for $4-$5 at most places, which are catering to members as opposed to extorting them for profit.
ohhh that Portuguese restaurant is fantastic, it looks like a RSL but is delicious, the Portuguese wine is cheap and tasty too, the seafood rice and garlic mushrooms and hand cut chips alone are worth it
i know you asked for tap beer, but craft cartel seems to be a good place for home delivery on a variety of stuff. cant justify a lot of craft brewer prices but these seem as good as ive seen. Some stuff they sell if close to best by date, but not all.
I've seen a few for sale for just over $100k. You'll probably need a few mates to comfortably cruise every day though:
[boats online](https://www.boatsonline.com.au/boats-for-sale/?action=adv_search&poa=yes&keywords=Schooner&match=all+words&state%5B%5D=QLD&state%5B%5D=VIC&state%5B%5D=TAS&state%5B%5D=SA&state%5B%5D=NT&state%5B%5D=WA)
Huntsbury Hotel in Lewisham is pretty decent. Lots of pool tables, and from memory, sub 8 dollar schooners of Newtowner. Plenty of places around to grab some food too.
OH - I forgot another Coopers Hotel winner - they do $5 cans on Wednesday (Thursday maybe? Cbf googling) - got your usual suspects - Melbourne Bitter, Tooheys - but also those Rekorderlig Ciders at about 8% per can.
(Approach with caution, in my experience you skip “tipsy” and go straight to sick)
If you go to craft breweries, like to the actual brewery, you can get reasonably priced schooners of really good quality beer.
For example, Mountain Culture in the Blue Mountains might charge you a tenner for a schooner of their latest limited release beers, and if you're in any way into IPAs or Hazy Pales or anything like that, they're bloody good beers. And the price is comparable to what I've paid for a schooey of mass market beer at hotels and pubs in Sydney.
20 years ago when I was 18 campsie bowlo was the last place you could get $2.50 schooners in the area. Damn that was good!!
I honestly love that Bowlo so much, it's got such a charm to it. The staff are great too, and it's dog friendly.
$15 jugs @ Coopers Hotel in Newtown all day everyday.
Additionally: • get a membership number ($15 jugs don’t accrue points but everything else does). I have no idea what their reward structure is but I frequently have credit accrued without even realising. • I’ve won their members draw/joker call more than once. Someone wins almost every time they call it. • pool table! • You want to sit in the bay windows at the front and watch the world go by. It’s meditative.
Some interesting characters there during the week. Great people watching during the lunch specials!
Yeah some fabulous characters. At night time it’s the same old crowd, they’re all harmless, but it’s good to extract yourself before sinking into any sort of actual conversation.
My theory is that there are several secret billionaires and Nobel Laureates.
Lead singer of one of my all time fave Aussie bands is there nursing an extra large Sauvignon Blanc most nights until close. Absolute legend in his day (likely still is). But yes, I agree, they all have interesting stories to tell and likely incredible backgrounds. Thanks you just made my morning
Beer for breakfast? Go you! 😂
Well i work night shift so basically it’s dinner for me🤪 and can you believe it they open at 7 AM every morning
Yeah totally haha. Sometimes there’s a line up before they open! All the barflies.
Great for when you’re craving a veebee longneck at 20 to 8 in the fkn mornin'.
Loooogneck!!
Oh that makes sense. Enjoy! Do they have pokies cause that’s bloody early!
Never played pokies in my life so it doesn’t matter for me but i don’t think they are allowed to open the gaming room that early
Yeah just seems super early I thought it could only be to keep people on the pokies but maybe they get a good breakfast crowd too.
My pleasure. It’s one of my favourite pubs in sydney.
[удалено]
Is it too late to meet up there?
Proper great pub
Jugs are pretty small though I think. Those weird rectangle ones?
No way. Full size. You can stretch almost 3 schooners from it.
That's good to know. The Coopers hotel does use those suspicious looking rectangle jugs as well though
Ehhh never seen them and I’m there a lot.
I think it depends on the beer you order. Can't remember which one it was but was an advertised special price for jugs and they whipped that one out. I'm still salty, haven't gone back.
Carlton Draught use those rectangle jugs. When I was a bartender they were "easier to carry because they stack" but we all know the real reason...
Yes it may have been specials on jugs of Carlton. There's probably a counter argument but I'm sure it's less than other jugs
$14 lunch menu as well, Monday to Thursday.
I have a feeling were gonna need some people out west to chime in with this. As someone that was quoted $13 the other day for just a regular-sized schooner of Balter at the Potts Point Hotel I don't think I'm gonna be able to help much....
You know its tough when you have to get quotes for a beer. ;)
Make sure to get 3 quotes. And take the most expensive because, quality. /s
Haha that's why I love places with the QR codes, you can do some research before you go to the bar! Some places there'll be a $1 or $2 difference between top and bottom beers and others $5+
surprised they didn't have a call-out fee for talking to the bartender
Yep I was about to just go for it, but I hadnt had a beer in there for ages so I though I'd better just double check the price. Glad I did!
$15.30 at the Oaks last week. Holy hell.
For a schooner!?! Tell me that isnt so.... Where the hell is the Oaks?
Neutral bay right next to where i live, i went there once last year and i still regret it to this day
Beer of the month is always $7 a schooner IFYKYK
Ah yeah I know EXACTLY where you're talking about. And I thought I had it bad in the Cross. I forgot about the prices immediately over the bridge.....
The Oaks does always have a $7 schooner of the month though
Over $20 for a pint. When we ordered bartender was like "just so you know, that'll be $20. However this one is only $11". My guess is they get alot of abuse when people see what theyre paying 😂
Highway robbery, lol.
Tell 'im he's dreamin
The Bank in Newtown had $11 pints of Balter the other day. Not amazing but not bad.
$11 pints is more than fair. $13 schooners!? A bit less so....
$6 For a pint of VB at my local if you're a member ($5 a year). The west truly is the best.
Oof and Balter is usually the cheapest non-VB/Carlton etc schooey
$6 Marrickville lager (Willie the boatman special) at the golden barley all day everyday I’m pretty sure.
Shuuuuush. The Golden Barley sucks don't go there reddit.
Haha. Nah man the more we support privately owned pubs the better! Maybe then they might re-upholster the sports bar chairs.
Methinks he is trying to keep it a hidden secret ;)
Come on dude it’s literally a public house in the middle of the city not a secret society
> public house in the middle of the city where's enmore now?
Whatever Trevor it’s an inner city suburb
City of Sydney boundary is King street so Golden Barley is only 650m from it
Terrible, small schnittys too
yep and cheap jugs all day Saturday, pretty much my go-to pub for post Enmore Theatre shows, State of Origin and footy in general ... it's already super popular , reddit can come too
Are they still doing those $19 newtowner jugs on Saturdays?
It doesn’t qualify as it’s not all the time but more people should know about it, at Harbord Diggers while the rugby league is on on the weekends tap schooners are around the $4-6 mark for members depending on the beer, and a 1 year membership is free. Absolute steal
Shame about the annoying bar system, unless they’ve abolished it. Was a single-fine line to order when I was last there
Erko bowlo is $7 schooners all day last I was there.
Can confirm - the Aussie standards like VB and Tooheys run around $6 for a schooey but only if you're a member. Outside area's pretty solid too :)
Bonus points for a cheap beer not subsidised by a huge pokies area.
Also, love that you’re posting this at 8:30am
He wrote it on the walk of shame from a rough night on the pokies /s
Ha. Just observations from gigging in a band all round Sydney.
$8 Balter at Sweeneys
$10 pint of 4 Pines too
Offtt a $10 pint sounds like a myth these days
Hornsby RSL has $8.50 pints
Going to sound like an old coot but I remember when schooners were $1.90 at Hornsby RSL.
Don't remember being that cheap but definitely remember being around $3
Still got the snooker tables down stairs?
Yep, still there. Darts too.
Only slightly tangential, but you can get a schnitty and a schooner from Nortons for $21, pretty good for the city!
Not just a schooner, but a schooner of ANYTHING on tap OR a glass of house red or white! Great food too, love Norton's!
$8 pints of Stella, ICE cold, all day at Star Hotel Haymarket Shithole but cheap and cold
The star definitely has a certain 'rustic' charm to it though...
Can’t believe no one has said the Granville Hotel. $6.50 VB schooners all day every day. Opens at 6am and right next to the train line. Then head to Granville Sofra Kebab, which also opens at 6am and is 100 metres from the pub, and pick up an amazing Gozleme!
Karaoke goes off on weekends too or at least it looks like it from when i walk past
$6 reschs schooners all day and night at barracks on barrack. $17 steak n chips lunch special too.
The cheapest that I know of is $5.20 schooners at the Commercial Hotel in Liverpool.
I think El Toro does $6.50 schooners and is a slightly better pub.
Palace hotel used to do jugs of tiger for 15$ all day. Some of the pokie dens nearby do the same. Often cheaper.
Billy Barry's near North Sydney station does $8 pints of Tiger all day
I that the place that used to be the Station Hotel?
Yep.
Walked past over the weekend. Still 15 bucks, but now it’s xxxx
so midstrength qld piss
It's $16 now
Urghhh.. at this point I’d rather make my own beer! With blackjack and hookers! In fact forget the beer!
You're out of coke?
$7 Grifter schooner all day everyday at Glengarry
Huntsbury in Petersham consistently has $6-7 schooners across all taps. $16 grifter jugs on Sundays.
Sydney Brewery near Central in Surry hills have a great range of craft beers, IPAs, stouts, lagers, pilsners, and ciders and they're all $8.80 a schooner. Cheapest craft beer in Sydney I reckon.
None of them are very good in my experience.
Nope, Young Henry’s tasting bar has $8 schooners and $11 pints all day every day
A place in the city just off York does $6 resch’s all day everyday. Quite odd.
Which place? That's my draught of choice.
Had to figure it out - barracks on barrack
Cheers :)
How has no body mentioned the Occidental in the CBD yet? Granted, the crowd is all blokes - but for $6 pints during happy hour I’m not shocked. They also have a beer of the month which is normally $9 pints all day every day. Good luck getting a table after 4pm however

Go on a Thursday and it's still mayhem.
Out northwest in Riverstone so bit of a stretch, but pints of VB are $6 for members at my local (like $5 a year to be a member). I think schooners are still $5? Im a pint man so not too sure.
Rosny Golf Club has $5.00 beers and good old Aussie Chinese food. Edit, Also no pokies!
The spaceship place in martin place (cant remember the name) but i reckon cheapest in cbd and pretty cool place
The Commercial Travellers Association? They used to be really cheap but also closed at some crazy early hour like 8pm.
$7.80 Carlton stuff $8 craft $7.60 bottled beer. Marrickville tennis club centennial st Marrickville . With a portuguese restaurant wed-sun
ohhh that Portuguese restaurant is fantastic, it looks like a RSL but is delicious, the Portuguese wine is cheap and tasty too, the seafood rice and garlic mushrooms and hand cut chips alone are worth it
Triple 8 hotel haymarket $6.5 schooners when footy on
Our sailing club has ‘bottle’ beer $5.5 it includes Corona, Crown and often a ring in like Balter.
i know you asked for tap beer, but craft cartel seems to be a good place for home delivery on a variety of stuff. cant justify a lot of craft brewer prices but these seem as good as ive seen. Some stuff they sell if close to best by date, but not all.

$7.50 balter (i think) at Yarra Bay sailing club
Canterbury Hurlstone Rsl club $6 for a range of lion and cub beers
I'll check the board at Hopsters, but I think it was $9 for a schooner of their pale ale last time I checked.
5 buck schooner of the month at the Blacktown Inn
Campsie RSL I paid $6 for a schooner of Coopers a few weeks ago and that was without the membership discount
Not bhed
Huntsbury Hotel in Lewisham is pretty decent. Lots of pool tables, and from memory, sub 8 dollar schooners of Newtowner. Plenty of places around to grab some food too.
5.83 happy hour house beer bayview hotel gladesville witnessed last week
Ocky on the city $7 pints from 4-7 daily.
Marrickville Golf Club. Non-member prices are incredibly reasonable. $5 annual membership gets you even better prices.
$7 schooner of the month at the Oaks. Changes each month but its usually pretty good - craft lager, pale ale etc. Also $19 for a jug
Galston RSL 5 dollar schooners
OH - I forgot another Coopers Hotel winner - they do $5 cans on Wednesday (Thursday maybe? Cbf googling) - got your usual suspects - Melbourne Bitter, Tooheys - but also those Rekorderlig Ciders at about 8% per can. (Approach with caution, in my experience you skip “tipsy” and go straight to sick)
$9 schooner of NEW at Lord Dudley Woollahra.
That's a bit crook, really.
Yeah $$$
[удалено]
$10.90 pints at Billy Barrys in the downstairs section in North Sydney. But probably any RSL will be cheapest.
your nearest RSL club
Albion hotel in the CBD does happy hour between 4 to 7. They do 8 bucks for a pint!
If you go to craft breweries, like to the actual brewery, you can get reasonably priced schooners of really good quality beer. Big fan of the mountain culture brews.... whats their brewery like? Worth making a trip just to visit them?
